I am tired of being assaulted by skanky cigarette smoke at every bus stop I need to go visit. You know who you are: you’re entitled to smoke where you please, just because you are outside. Well I consider it an assault to my person and criminal negligence that you are within 13 feet of me in the bus stop, even after I pointed out that you were in the wrong. Your attitude was after you lit your smoke and set your purse inside then you might move….all of six feet away. Like can’t you see that your smoke blows inside this plexiglass square, bathing the rest of us with your noxious fumes?
Furthermore, I don’t get that common assault and speeding are also covered by legislation just like Smoke-Free Places. The first two result in tickets. The smoking in smoke-free places is ignored and no one takes enforcement seriously. If it is the law, where are the enforcers? I even have to walk through the haze to get into the hospital! What kind of message does that portray?

You cannot literally be assaulted by smoke – cigarette or otherwise. One might question your “need” to go “visit” a bus stop. While you may consider this an assault, the courts don’t. If the wind blows the smoke into the shelter, is it not the fault of the wind, not the smoker?
Breaking the Smoke-Free Places law does indeed result in a ticket. Why do you think it does not? Where are the enforcers? Imagine the manpower it would take to police smokers… you’d have to employ them 24/7 (as people smoke 24/7), the cost for their employment would be $24K/yr (based on minimum wage and mandatory employment-related costs) per person. Now multiply that by I dunno’… 10,000? Are you willing to pay them?
When you walk though a haze at the hospital, you are walking on a public sidewalk (it is legal to smoke on a public sidewalk, provided you’re the prescribed distance form air intake vents, windows and doorways) and specifically in the area which people smoke. If you walk into a strip club and as a devout Christian you’re offended, maybe don’t go into strip clubs?
As there are other bus stops, there is another side to the street… use them.
Ok, smokers can be rude at times but don’t compare it to an assault. Something tells me you’ve never been assaulted, in the traditional beat-the-shit-out-of-you-and-take-your-rent-money sense. Give me smoke any day.

What about all the industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust and pollutants coming from the smoke stacks, oil refinery, & big businesses being pumped into our atmoshphere daily, not to mention a harbour full of sewage, condoms and tampax . A whiff of cig smoke ain’t gonna make a lick of difference. So suck it up buttercup, it strengthens the immune system!

I’ll let you in on a little-known secret OP. Bus shelters and the sidewalk thirty feet on either side of a bus shelter are smoker’s territory. The shelters are public smoking lounges. The best place to wait is away, upwind from the fume territory. You should have time to walk to the bus while the smokers are stubbing their butts and lining up. (I always do) Seems many posters here are smokers considering the nature of the comments. Some of whom correctly point out that vehicles and chimneys also spew out toxins. The difference being the lack of signs posted restricting areas for those emissions.
As far as I’m concerned, if people want to smoke cancer sticks, go right ahead — MY problem is when smokers blatantly ignore the smoking laws and the rest of us non smokers get to put up with this shit and with the entitled attitude because OH HAY no one ever enforces the law. Why bother posting signs if no one’s going to pay attention and respect them? You’d be better off burning it. ffs.
