To the patrons who come in and get a free meal (because you didn’t buy that gift card for yourself): Just because $150 of your shit was free doesn’t mean that you only have to tip on the $32.98 that actually goes on your credit card! You receive the same service as everyone else and your food is the same quality. If you can’t afford to tip appropriately, then stay the hell home! —Three percent on one eighty two ninety eight

  1. I feel like people only post tipping bitches here because they know they can get a rise out of the commenters.

  2. I agree one hundred percent with this bitch. All the a-holes on this site, who say they will never tip again, most likely never leave their basement. And probably tip the pizza guy 50 cents. Whatever comes of this thread, and there will be innane backlash, just remember I am with you.

  3. I have to agree with this bitch. Anyone who forks out that much for the meal should have paid gratuity on the entire meal.

  4. As I’ve said before a tip is something that is given or not given freely. If servers are worried about their wages, maybe they should form a union to have their employers to pay them more. If a restaurant is so upend where a meal is $50.00+ per plate then they should be able to pay more to their employees.

  5. I spend a great deal of time out of my basement.

But just so the OP doesn’t feel bad about society as a whole I would like to mention that I recently dined out and used a gift card to pay for about 1/2 of the bill. I got VERY good service (though I didn’t pull out the gift card until the end of the night) and tipped based on the total bill, not on the portion I had to cover with my own cash.

  6. OP, how about asking your boss for a raise instead of blaming the customer. You accepted the job and the wages he/she pays you. Don’t look to the customer to compensate your income. Also, don’t forget to claim 100% of your tips on your income tax.

  7. Never posted on all the other tipping bitches, can the coast just open a new page on the site called “love the way we tip”

  8. Many diners don’t understand tipping etiquette.

You would normally tip based on a percentage of the total bill before taxes and discounts are applied.

Folks who think a gift card entitles them to ignore this standard don’t understand tipping and should stay home or restrict their dining experiences to places like McDonald’s or Burger King.

  9. I am thinking that the chances are those people are too cheap to eat out and therefore others felt bad for them and bought them a gift card. I always worry that if others are paying for my meal that they are not leaving enough tip, especially when I am with a large group. Larger bill doesn’t always mean larger tip especially when one person is paying for it. I sometimes leave some myself when nobody is looking, just to make sure. Better luck next time, maybe, OP.

  10. I had a $100 gift certificate and used it one time at a joint on Argyle, the server, who was fine up until that point, made it clear that we were expected to tip on our whole meal value! It really rubbed me the wrong way, I mean, I knew that and was planning on it, so don’t be so pushy, arsewad, or I might change my mind.

  11. Your server would have gotten a tip from me Ralmn. I’d have told her not to talk to strange old men, on my way out the door. *Snort*

  12. You should ask the person who buys the gift card to tip then right? That makes more sense. Getting a $150 gift card is insane! You don’t even know the reason behind it…maybe this person is poor and was given a nice gift from someone?

  13. When I was working at a restaurant, a customer was buying a gift certificate and asked me, “do I pay the tip now, or do the people I give the gift certificate to pay?” I thought that was kind of funny.

  14. As soon as someone asks or hints for a tip, I tell them “Don’t bet on the ponies”, pay the bill (sans tip) and leave.

  15. ralmn, that would have pissed me the fuck off! I would have tipped ZIP if anyone ever said that to me. Oh, I would have snapped!

Keep in mind that before the bitch section disenchanted me, I was a good tipper. I tipped everyone 15% unless the service was “talk to the manager” kind of horrible. (I think I might have helped foster this entitled attitude by being too lenient with my tips, but I’m gonna make up for all that tenfold now) But even back then, in ye olde tipping days, I would have given that particular server zilch.

Of course it doesn’t matter now, as I’m no longer tipping restaurant servers anymore. At least not until the can get the bad taste of “server entitlement” out of my mouth. This is a fucking epidemic. It’s not even about whether or not servers should be tipped or not, I’m happy to tip. It’s about the fucking stank of entitlement to something that by definition is NOT MANDATORY. I hate entitled people, be they servers or no, they just make my blood boil. I just don’t have the fucking patience for it.

Seriously, if a server ever told me sincerely (without knowing my secret identity) that I shouldn’t feel pressured to tip them, I’d tip them fifty bucks on the spot for being awesome. I’m not even joking. I’ll do it if it ever happens. For realz.
