Why did we not spray pesticides to kill the ticks with Lyme disease? Now they are spreading out and will be harder to destroy. —Sick of environmentalists fear mongering

  1. Because, if you spray pesticides, they will killll you. I.E. they (the ticks) will become resilient, and become stronger..and more potent.

  2. Your fear mongering about ticks and lyme disease is much better than environmentalists’ fear mongering about pesticides and cancer.

  3. Because pesticides are evil. However I don’t remember one kid when I was younger 30+ years ago, who grew a second head or had asthma or grew an extra arm or leg, and no one was allergic to peanut butter.

  4. depends on where you live o.p., there are no ticks in the better part of stewiacke or even bridgewater. bedford now, that’s rife with the little fucks, and only burning the place out, will get rid of them all.

  5. We need to re-educate ourselves first. We need to stop thinking of the ticks as “The Other” and recognize that we are all part of one interconnected biocommunity and that if the only way they have of feeling empowered is to spread Lyme disease, then it is we, as a society, who have failed them.

By all means, we must communicate to them that feasting on people’s blood and transmitting Lyme disease is an inappropriate behavior designed to attract negative attention, but at the same time we must nurture their self esteem and provide viable long term opportunities for them.

Communication and mutual respect, not violence and punishment are the only answer.

  6. Very nice Col. Thank you.

nsNTH… I didn’t even catch that, how can you be so awake at 8:15 on a Sunday?

Brain lump in head work better after peppermint mocha frappuchino. >: (

  8. I think we didn’t have that mass-spraying because biologists and managers realized *it wasn’t going to work*. It would introduce a lot of chemicals into a public park for no good reason. That’s why I’ve heard managers are considering setting up deer feeding stations and spraying those as a less-toxic and more targeted alternative.

Also, I think ticks are spreading more because of warm winters (*cough* climate-change!) than because of what we’re not doing.

  9. My friendly neighborhood Barstucks. They are more expensive than drugs and 3 times as addictive.
It’s me sunday treat. I feed the corbies their bag of leftovers then bring back tasty sugar laden beverages to jump star a busy day of horizontal stretches on the sofa and alternating forearm curls with the channel changer. *Snort*

It’s the Ivan fitness plan – it takes the 20 worst years off your life – you die younger but a lot happier.
