In his reference to the three steroid freaks’ smaller members, Renegade was on to something whether he was aware of it or not. For steroid freaks in particular and body-builders in general – they are often the same people – are narcissists, those psycho-anal types who tend to self-worship, who are absorbed in what they suppose are their own bodily perfections. But why is this so? What are the roots of narcissism?

Both the smaller members of the steroid freaks and their narcissism have a common origin. While they may not appear at first glance to do so they possess distinct female characteristics, in particular a fundamentally female psychology. But of what does that psychology consist? It consists – you can see it coming, can’t you – of a tendency to self-worship, in an absorption with what they suppose are their own bodily perfections.

It is well known of course that females are creatures of the flesh, creatures of the body. In a manner alien to the male for whom activity is central, the female is her body. That, and her bodily offspring, is constitutive of her identity. For the female her and its appearance is everything. While her obsessive quest for bodily perfection is unending whether in the form of skin-care products, perfume or clothes – she must always have the latest fashion – the origins of that quest were to be found in attracting the male who would fertilize her ova and provide for the ensuing children. However that quest has become fetishized, it has become behaviour detached from its roots in procreation. The female’s greatest companion of course is the mirror into which she gazes frequently with both rapt and deep attention. Like the original Narcissus who fell in love with his own image in the waters of a lake from which he was drinking, the female’s image and identity are one. She is the modern embodiment of Narcissus.

The steroid freaks share all of these traits in equal measure. The mirror in front of which they strut and pose is their constant companion. The loving attention with which they gaze upon their bodies approaches the orgasmic. Technically of course they are male but in fact are hermaphrodites. Their female psychology has trumped their anatomy with the result that they possess progressively smaller members. In time those members will disappear altogether and they will become sterile and impotent eunuchs which of course was always their true destiny.
