We have the right lane for drivers that want to driver 80Kmh.
We have the left lane for idiots that want to drive 140kmh.
I say it is about time that the rest of us get our own lane. —speedlimit plus or minus 10 clicks

A 3rd lane would be expensive.
Cost effective solution: pass slow drivers using the left lane, then return to the right lane. Dummy.
Drive the speed limit in the left lane?
Or you could just stay right except to pass as the law dictates.
I know where you are coming from, OB. I have had similar thoughts …except I don’t see the need for a third lane. IMO, the left lane should be for those driving the speed limit (+/- a few kms) and the right lane should be for slow moving vehicles and large vehicles such as 18 wheelers that slow down on uphill climbs. I would love to be able to drive the whole way to Truro and beyond in the left lane with the cruise set at the speed limit. If that was the way people drove then traffic would move a lot smoother. Perhaps the advent of self driving cars will make that a reality.
But I know that if I tried that today there would be dorks driving inches from my bumper to try to intimidate me into the right lane. The biggest danger on the highways is with those daredevil, bumper hugging, pass at all costs drivers who feel they are entitled to drive as much as 30 km above the limit. They are far more of a menace weaving in and out of traffic than the elders toddling along at 90km/hr.
Hey, @theKing. Who made you the traffic sheriff? Entitled drivers that camp in the left lane and feel the need to tell everyone how to drive is certainly a problem.
If you are ever in the left lane with the right lane free, then you are in the wrong. Always stay to the right unless you are passing a slower car. This works for 2, 3 or 10 lanes of traffic! It’s an amazing thing called right-of-way and these rules of the road were on your driving test. It all works very well when people just follow the right of way rules…
The King, you are in the wrong. The left lane is for passing only.
Get out of it otherwise and stop trying to be a “mobile speed bump.” The police are there to take care of speeders, and you are not “entitled” to self-righteously try do their jobs for them.
I’m not sure you realize just what a “menace” you might be. Hogging the left lane is plenty dangerous, probably just as dangerous if not more than speeding.
golocal/Jammie,
I’m well aware of the rules and I follow them. I drive in the right lane on the highway, only use the left to pass, and try to stay exactly at the speed limit using cruise control. If you reread my post, I didn’t state otherwise.
I was simply agreeing with the OB’s premise (however unrealistic) that it would be nice IF there was a lane reserved for those that drove at the speed limit at all times. It would cut down on all the bobbing and weaving that happens on the highway now and might cut down on accidents. Traffic would move more smoothly as well since you wouldn’t be constantly getting stuck behind slow moving vehicles while you waited for an opening to pass.
The bigger problem right now though is drivers who are constantly 10,20 km or more over the speed limit. They tend to camp out in the passing lane together and make it difficult for those driving (legally) at the speed limit to find an opening in traffic so we can safely pass slower vehicles. And when you try to pass a line of three or four slow moving vehicles it’s not unusual for someone to come flying up from behind at 140 km/hr and stay inches from your bumper until you move back to the right lane. Another accident waiting to happen!
If i had to pick between the too slow and too fast drivers I would say they are the biggest menace. The slow ones are only an annoyance to go around.
Anyway, drive carefully folks, slow down you speed demons, and obey the rules of the road.
