What the fuck makes you think you’re so special that you get to leave on time while everyone else in the finance dept stays 2 hours longer every day? You’re behind so when I asked you to stay until the work is done, you don’t tell your boss, “only if you pay me overtime…”! You and your co-workers are on salary and we don’t pay overtime. And I don’t know what world you live in, but most employers don’t pay overtime and it’s typical for salaried employees to work more than 40 hours a week. It’s our year end, so I asked you to come in on Saturday, you ask if you get an ‘in lieu of’ day off in the week! No, you’re behind, and we needed you to work that extra day! What the fuck is the point of getting you in on a Saturday to catch up when you’re just going to take a week day off??? Then you have the nerve to say no and that you’re not paid enough to be married to your job! You’re getting $30,000/year for fucks sake! Some employers pay their finance staff less than that, so you are lucky to work for us! You’re the most self entitled brat. Some staff work 12 hour workdays here and some take work home, and do they complain? No! It’s called having a good work ethic!! Get one, lazy ass! —Frustrated supervisor

What did you expect when you hired a millennial.
FUCK THAT!!!
if you ‘expect’ someone to consistently work overtime…. fucking pay for it either in coin or lieu.
Your expectation of employees working for FREE is unacceptable and would NEVER hold up in Court.
the other employees need to WAKE THE FUCK UP!!! TIME SERVED IS TIME DESERVED!
if your company can’t survive with the number of employees, fucking hire some.. I can’t fucking believe that this ‘supervisor’ can’t see the utter truth of the reality here…. no one but the EMPLOYER is benefiting from the FREE WORK.
WISE THE FUCK UP!
You’re expecting one hell of a lot for a lousy $30k a year job. Employers like the one described make the bile rise in my throat. I thought only Irving-based companies pulled this rank kind of shit by not paying overtime.
$30,000 per year is not nearly enough to inspire a “good work ethic.” That is $16/hour (assuming a 35 hour workweek), or less than $600 per week, pre-tax. If you want a good work ethic, you have to be willing to pay what it is worth.
Hey Frustrated Supervisor, I’m gonna need you to come to my house this weekend and do some cleaning and light repair work. I won’t be paying you, you should be grateful for the opportunity, you entitled brat!
I arrive late for work most days.
But to make up for it, I leave early…
It seems that Scrooge McDuck is alive and thriving somewhere in a HRM workplace. Probably many of them if the truth be known. However, it seems they mostly have the backing of the province as far as overtime goes, as there are a myriad of special rules etc.

Makes on wonder though if this expectation of employment rule about o’time, and maybe others, may have all been told to the employee before they were hired, or if there is an ’employee handbook’ or similar that spells it out. Probably not as the company may have to spend some coin to produce one. And that would give Scrooge the vapours.
Some of these type of places had started to die out years back when jobs were easier to come by, especially more government positions. But they are able to flourish these days with a tighter job market, and people taking what they can get. At least for a while.
30k is a shit salary. thats hourly wage territory, and hourly wage mentality.
you want dedication? pay more.
This seems like the kind of place where there’s high turnover and everyone qualified jumps ship when they can, but absolutely no one (at a management level) can figure out why.
OB, i dont have to be a millenial to disagree with you. My time at the end of the day is worth at least as much as it is worth at the beginning of the day. You don’t have to pay me OT, but you can kiss my ass if you think that I will work it for free.
lol 30k a year and you want someone to work extra? No thanks. You should be offering time off in lieu, 100%, just make sure they’re aware that the day can only be taken when you’re not busy and it won’t affect outcomes.
@dartguy thanks for the link–I have been wondering where our labour standards have gone and why many supervisors see them as something they can choose to either respect or ignore. The work may need to be done, Frustrated Supervisor, but that does not negate the fact that the labour standards must be respected. Treating employees like you own them and their off time is extremely unintelligent and disrespectful to say the least. Maybe if you treated your employees with a little more decency, they actually would give a little more of their personal time to help you make your business ends meet. Maybe you need to take a hard look at your business plan or model, and try making improvements there, instead of expecting hard working employees to be at your behest during their personal time.
OP, you’re a fuckin dipshit
Man, and here I thought I was getting fucked over. 30k? yoiks.
and this, dear readers, is why people unionize….
… and/or move away.
FYAD, OB.
The employer wants him to get some work ethic??? pay what it’s worth then. Union all the way.
I’m a 45 year old manager who makes a little more than 3 times the salary you’ve quoted, I have no issue with working all over the clock and flexing my time to make up for it here and there, and I get my job done regardless of the hours or effort needed. As do my staff, who make double the salary that you’re talking about and graciously accept the perks, rewards, and yes lieu time that I offer them when they go the extra mile to get something big done – which they never complain about.
Notice the differences?
You are expecting law-office hours and effort for McDonald’s wages. You are a piece of shit, and so is your company.
Fuck off OB. Labour Board would disagree. You don’t own this person. Maybe they had plans? If you’re assigning so much work that everyone ‘has’ to work overtime.. YOU NEED TO HIRE MORE STAFF.
You are going to bleed people, and get a reputation for this shit. Then you won’t be able to find anyone.
But keep it up. I’m sure it will work out for you.
And 30,000 a year?!?!?!?! Go jump off a cliff.. I made that 10 years ago in retail for fucks sake.
Wow. My employer pays for a slice of my life and while I am there I work hard. If they need or want more they need to pay for taking me away from my life. I work to live not they other way around.
Maybe try going to a restaurant and buy a piece of pie and then ask for a second slice for free to see what the work ethic of the place is.
You are frustrated because no one wants to give their life away for free, you should go reflect on that
The fact that your employees have to work 12 hour days and take work home with them sounds more like a management problem than a “work ethic” one.
No one owns your every waking hour. Slavery was abolished a long time ago.
Sounds like you couldn’t manage a two car funeral. You can’t manage your labour hours, budget, or employee’s. You don’t own peoples time. Pay for it. Stop underbidding. 30,000 hasn’t been a descent salary for over a decade.
If everyone in that department are always working 2 hours overtime, it is time for the employer to hire more staff. Even people who work in emergency services or combat are given overtime or paid time off in lieu. OB you are a sucker.
Why are staff working 12 hour days and taking work home?! If they also make 30K a year, that works out to $9.60 an hour, less than minimum wage. This sounds like a management problem to me. Too much work and not enough staff. Lets be honest, at 30K a year no one wants to come in and work on a Saturday with no overtime or day in lieu. Pay your staff more and make them feel appreciated, then maybe they’ll be willing to stay. No one wants to work for free…..
No PAY, NO PLAY!!
Or work, in this case!
What kind of response did you expect from people? I work in an office where meat heads make ” work projects”. Which basically means they ‘re working hard at not working. Walk around with a sheet of paper with nothing on it is highly effective. And guess what else? Your boss and their bosses are doing the same, by delegating their work to you. And you make $30000 or less. It’s maybe not about wasting all year at doing nothing and cramming shit at the end, without paying your staff, maybe it’s about hiring ethical people who work hard all year and giving them a thank you for doing it. That’s how shit gets done.
