I wish I could say I’m surprised at how much Nova Scotia sucks at the Winter Games but I’m really not. I know of three major sports where the top seeded athlete was not even asked to compete in the Winter Games. How can you be ranked number 1 in your sport for the province and be ready, willing and able to compete in the games and yet not even be considered? In another sport, the number 2 ranked athlete in the province was not asked to compete but the 9th ranked athlete was… hmmm… wonder how that happened? Oh, riiiiight… the coach is number 9’s father.
I follow local athletes, artists and musicians because I like to see Nova Scotia do well on the national and international front but when it’s just a who’s who of mediocre athletes chosen through favours by people with agendas then it’s no longer a sporting event… it’s a political farce and an embarrassment to the province. I realize that there are many athletes who deserve to be there but when you hear story after story of highly ranked athletes who were expected to be in the games but overlooked for one reason or another it raises questions.
On a side note. My son is a valley based snowboader who would love to have the chance to watch some events but because we don’t live in the HRM (just 20 minutes from Martock, though) and there are no weekend events he doesn’t get to see any of them. Since the province won’t give non-HRM Nova Scotians even 1 day off to see events I guess I will excuse him from school so he can go. Maybe if you allowed more people a day off to see events they wouldn’t be as empty as they appear on TV… when you can find them on TV of course. Screw the Winter Games. —Mom of a future Olympian

Look past, not ignore, this missed opportunity and keep to Martock.
You focusing on how to make his dream possible will help make up for the lack of help offered by the city.
I do agree with kids having at least one day to go get inspired by the games etc. Nova Scotia isn’t gonna do well, its population base is much lower than the top four in the medal category meaning less people to find “talent” from and is much poorer than them four provinces who can put money in to their youth facilities.
Good attitude, Hockey-Mom. keep those snowboards in good shape for when you have to unload them on kijiji.
If you have a problem with the selection process contact Sport Nova Scotia who will fill you in what how it is decided on who represents Nova Scotia. Pretty sure that “parents pick” isn’t one of the criteria.
For that matter, it is involved parents who volunteer their time to come up with things like training camps (mandatory, BTW, even for #1’s) and selection criteria. Maybe look into getting involved before you make a bigger bitch of yourself.
“Mom of a future Olympian” Suuuuuuuure you are. Just like every other parent with a kid in some sort of sport.
Oh yeah, also, if they only scheduled stuff on weekends so people could drive to watch the games would take 4 months.
Typical attitude of a parent of a child involved in competitive sports. Yeah, yeah, yeah…..every kid is going to be the next Olympian. OP, care to wager on your kid being that Olympian?
Anglo is right, anyone who’s followed past Canada Games knows it’s the larger provinces with bigger populations to select from (and better funding to boot) that do well, Nova Scotia never does. This isn’t new.
Why do I get the feeling OP is pissed because their son didn’t get in?
It still would have been nice if there was SOMETHING to watch last weekend. Their “turn around” day was Saturday, so no competitions at all, and Sunday there was only a couple of things. I was pretty bummed because I was actually planning on going to a few events. Oh well.
Wait…
…People are paying attention to these games? :-/
I saw a highlight of the women’s NS versus sumbuddy this morning and there were about 5 people in the stands…
LOVE this!
n.s. and canada, both suck at things such as this. if you started a category for whining about shit, then hands down, they would win gold, everytime.
but games being the waste of time that they are, just get stupider, every fucking year. and the ones that put them on, well no hope there either.
This bitch is true and can be applied to all aspects of NS. It’s how we operate and why we are a third world province.
stop being so nice yyy, maybe 4th or even 30th. would be more discriptive of us here
I laughed ….hard when I heard about the Canada Games Ping Pong !
Why are there so many lame sports ?
They’re getting rid of boxing !
Why so they can open a slot for baton twirling ??
Give us blood & guts damn it !!!
Here’s a Maritme Sport for ya.
I want seal clubbing , & not just coming out & seeing who can make the biggest bloody mess or who can knock the little bastards head off with 1 blow . No I want to see SKILL Baby !
Put the seal cub on one end of a teeter totter & you gotta get from your end hit the little bugger in the head & then restabilize, without either end of the teeter totter hitting the ground.
What about a good ole game of Bum Darts !
You never see that played anywhere…unless you’ve been to Nfld or parts of Cape Breton.
look at figure skating, any asshole can do a figure 8! ! !
You say you got skills, show me 2 figure 4’s !
NOW THAT WOULD TAKE SKILL !
and long track skating ovals…whats up with that ‘eh ?
Give us a figure 8 shaped rink, & send teams of skaters going as fast as they can with blinders on ,so they can’t see to the left or right & put the audience in the middle & wait for the impacts ….now that’s & mans sport.
Damn pussy’s.
