Hey, retired people, stop double dipping into pensions, and stealing jobs from skilled young professionals. I appreciate all the hard work that you have put into your career over the years, but it’s time to pass the torch. There are many young professionals coming out with diplomas and degrees eager to make a significant contribution to the workforce, but are held back by the lack of positions available. You retiring, and then promptly taking up another similar position with the company is not helping with the situation. I hope that you enjoy your comfortable living and relaxing lifestyle with your pension, and new salary coming in, while the young professionals struggle to find any real justification in life. —Dr. NoCareer, PhD, MBA

  1. Teachers are especially ‘bad’ for this. But can you blame them? Everyone needs to survive, unfortunately it’s usually at the expense of the younger generations.

  2. i never knew how altruistic profit seeking companies could be! amazing. so they selflessly keep on these high paying oldsters rather than hire young degree holders who would be cheaper, have no seniority, less vacation time off. healthier?
why is that so, dya think?

teachers may have some kind of union clause thingy, but run of the mill private enterprise? why would a company voluntarily pay more for an old fart?

  3. And I’m sure you’ll retire and die quietly and neatly out of the way to make room when you get old, OP.

  4. After spending a weekend with a number of retired teachers and profs, some doing sub/contract work, some not – and hearing about their local cottage, their southern home and the cruises – I am straight up jealous. I know I will never have that retirement even though I put away the more than advised 10%. I really feel for grads now. I’ve got about 15 years in post grad and I had to move away for over a decade to numerous provinces/countries to get experience. Today’s retirees re-entering the workplace b/c they’re bored certainly does not help…

  5. post grad in what field foley?

if you are putting away 10% in mutual funds with compound interest, why wouldn’t you be ok at retirement? i wouldn’t rely on company pension plan. i have never worked for a company that has one. all i get is what i put away myself.
if you work for any place that has tenure, guaranteed pensions, govt, etc. most likely they will continue to have pensions when your time comes.

  6. TAKE MY FUCKING JOB! TAKE MY ANAL-RENTATIVE PENCIL NECKED OVERLORD WHILE YOU’RE AT IT!!!!

Seriously, folks, I’m retiring next year and can’t fucking wait – I’m done, 40 years on the workforce is enough. I wholeheartedly agree that some old farts who hang on to their jobs with embedded fingernails should take a fucking hike and give someone else a break. No wonder young people are fleeing this province.

  7. But … in my occupation you just keep moving up the ladder ’til you die .
Dragging the next generation of workers behind you with good pay & the promise of more work & more responsibility , bringing higher pay & more work & more responsi. …. in a never ending loop until you succome from it.

THat’s just the way it is.

  8. skilled young what? you mean the burger flippers and call nannies. and why would a young person want to be a wally mart greeter?

  9. hey OP, my boss won’t ‘let’ me retire. i’ve been trying since 2005. he keeps sweetening the pot to make me stay. you want to step into my shoes right out of school? i’ll tell him to give you a call, shall i?

it’s simplistic to claim that people are clinging to their jobs out of greed or boredom. if the companies (private) didn’t want them, need them they would be flung out to sea.

  10. Op… while i agree with what you’re saying, you should make extra sure that THAT is why nobody will hire you. I know people with a lot less education that don’t have your problems.

  11. My best buddy works on an airforce base for a civilian company. Out of the 14 employees, only himself and his boss are not collecting a full military pension on top of their 50,000+/yr salary.

  12. ok, WHY are those people working there? is there no one else who can do the kind of work they do? employment is a 2 way street. the person who wants the job, and the person who hires them. why does this company hire retired soldiers?

  13. I’ll work as long as I want to work. If I want to work til I’m 100, I’ll fucking well do so. If you don’t like it, too fucking bad.

  14. i have no problem with people working until they wanna work. It’s when they retire collect pension and continue doing their job on a “consultant” fee under the table as a research grant so they don’t pay as many taxes and they dont pay ei or cpp that i have a problem with things. It happens at universities A LOT.

Any chance for a few specifics by any chance? No, I didn’t think so.

    : Foley (5:04PM)

“I’ve got about 15 years in post grad and I had to move away…”

Really, is that so Foley? No chance of specifying just what degrees you have and the time taken for each is there? No, I didn’t think so. I have five degrees including a Ph.D. and don’t come close to 15 years “post grad.”
    Time to stop bullshitting, Foley.

No specific examples to back that statement up by any chance? No, I didn’t think so.

    A pleasure as always.

  16. Yes actually, MM. I was referring to crotchety old teachers who hold onto the job they’ve had for decades past their due date, even tho they are no longer qualified for it, at the inconvenience of young intelligent teachers looking to make a living and establish themselves. They’re unqualified because of their outdated teaching methods, they’re not up to date with the latest information on their subject matter, they may not be bilingual, or they simply don’t care anymore, and a whole host of other reasons.

I’ve had a few of these teachers growing up, thankfully none in post-secondary. As well, I have a few teachers in my family that can verify my statements.

    Now fuck off.

  17. There are tons of teachers who return after retirement and do contract work. I happen to be related to 3!

  18. And it’s not an entirely bad thing, secretagent! Like I said in my first post, can you blame them? But, there are some ol’ hags that need to… upgraded?

What is it that you don’t understand about the phrase “specifics examples”? Your entire post was a jumble of the usual unsupported teacher-bashing generalizations. In other words, just the usual hot blow.

    Now you fuck off.

    : secretagent (9:56AM)

“Contract teachers” are hired to teach a specific class when regular, full-time teachers are unavailable. They are not part of the regular full-time teaching staff and rarely, if ever, carry a “full load”. Speak to the three contract teachers you mentioned, then give specifics. At what level and what subject(s) do they teach. How many hours do they teach in a regular school day? Ask them why they are “on contract.” Learn something.

    : Brandon Wilcoc (10:35AM)

You may not have noticed but this is an anonymous site so you are in no danger of losing your job. But we all know that was just a dodge, just another bit of bullshit, don’t we. So my request still stands: “Any chance for a few specifics?” No, I didn’t think so.

  20. Many retirees maintain a ‘casual’ status at their place of employment because they have trouble making ends meet with their pension money alone. I work with retired nurses who pick up a shift every couple of weeks to round out their income. I see nothing wrong with this at all. If a person is still physically capable to do the job, that’s their prerogative.

  21. And of course when a person retires, their expenses automatically reduce by the same amount as their pensions. So those bitching about it, think how you would live if you were getting somewhere between 40 and maybe 70% of your present pay.

  22. actually this is not an anonymous site it is linked directly into my facebook account anyone with any knowledge of how to use computers could easily trace it back. Where i work at a university that could be problematic.

Well Brandon – may I call you “Brandon”? – there’s an old saying. It goes like this: “Put up or shut up.”

So Brandon, if you can’t put up, then just shut up. Got the idea?

  24. Awwww, the poor little Philosopher is confused again! It’s too bad the terrible teachers he had didn’t teach him some comprehension skills.

I’ll not be getting into specifics about friends and family with you. You’re asking for a list of names and dates outlining my education history and personal history so that you can verify what? That I was actually taught by ancient and inept teachers? That they even exist? Are you so blind and that you think these people I speak of don’t exist? Silly Sally… I don’t need to cite all my sources or create a bibliography, or map out every concept and idea so your struggling mind can interpret them. That’s your own prerogative.

Also, I’m not bashing teachers, especially since I aspire to become one. I’m bashing retired people who return to the work force when they shouldn’t, to take potential positions from more qualified youth. That’s a pretty specific demographic. But of course, you failed to comprehend any of that.

BTW… “Your entire post was a jumble of the usual unsupported teacher-bashing generalizations. In other words, just the usual hot blow.” That’s your unsupported opinion. I’d also like you to describe the ‘usual’ teacher bashing that you mentioned. Please quote me from anywhere outside this thread. I patiently await your floundering

  25. Oh fuck off OB. I understand the jobs are not freeing up, but this is the exact same shit gen x had to deal (baby boomers taking up all the jobs) with and they made out just fine.

Why don’t you mind your own business? If someone wants to work until they drop dead, i say good for them. They don’t owe your ass anything.

Suck it up and compete for the jobs like the rest of us. It’s not anyone’s responsibility to leave their job so you can get one.

  26. no one is going to hire some old fart out of the goodness of their heart. if people are working past retirement age, someone is letting them, or hiring them. why?
because they are good at what they do and worth keeping.

why on earth would anyone think that they would magically get a plum job if everyone over 50 dropped out? oh wait. because then the employers would be so desperate for a body to fill that chair they would take anyone. is this truly what you are saying OP? that you aren’t really qualified, don’t have the experience (which you get at lower levels) but that you should get that job just because ….because what? because you are you? special? like mom said you were? like your school’s ads said because they wanted to lure you in with false promises of what your future would be? remember that school, any kind, need ‘customers’. that’s you, a customer. yeah, take 3 years of this or that, put on your suit and smile your way into a corner office, with ‘meaningful’ work and congenial co-workers, a grateful boss and sparkling teeth. oh, and the wine bar after work with good looking women.
you have to WORK to get work.
your other option is to make it open season on over 50’s. target practise. pinball. tags like deer. and speaking of which, whoever the bl**dy h*ll is shooting the deer out at high head, i curse you.

  27. Brandon Wilcox: This is just about the “anonymous” status of users, nothing to do with the bitch. You do not have to link Facebook with the Coast, you can create an actual Coast account with just an email. If the email is linked to Facebook, a tracking cookie comes into play. This can be adjusted/turned off in you Facebook privacy filters, keeping you anonymous. You can also create a stand alone email account that is not linked to any site with personal information and create your Coast profile. Your anonymous if you chose to be, you can be identified if you chose to be. And the claim anyone that knows anything about computers can easily trace your actions to find your identity is not really that accurate. The effort involved in tracing and seperating binary codes from various sources (the Coast, Facebook, Gmail, etc.) to cross reference is not an easy task, it would also be a fulltime job for a little while.

  28. I know of too many people with excellent pensions who are also working high paying jobs, making more than me with just one income let alone the two they are pulling in plus their spouse’s income and then have the nerve to talk about how they are so poor, have no money, can’t pay the mortgage, etc.

WTF??? It’s just me and I pay the mortgage, buy what I require and do it on one income, not three.

  29. Well if you are one of those people who get a BED and expect a job, you are delirious. Take a career path in which you are sure to get a job. Not a path which you know for a fact is clogged up with hangers on. I don’t blame the double dippers, I blame you people. Do your research!!!

Does this strike you as screamingly funny as it did me? I thought it was a hilarious knee-slapper! What a buffoon you are!

But I’m not interested in your friends & family. I’m not even interested in you. What I am interested in is, if someone makes serious charges against others, they better have evidence to support those charges. Everything else is just malicious libel. You do understand that, don’t you Lebob? No, probably not.

    : Sonictooth5 (1:15PM)

Well, there you go. Like everybody else, I knew Brandon was bullshitting, just trying to wriggle out of my demand for specifics. But we all knew better. And that job of his at the university? Well, let’s just say it’s not a Full Professor in the Philosophy Department. It’s just that the university has to keep their floors clean like other places too, and that’s where Brandon comes in. Am I wrong? Are you there Brandon? What’s your excuse this time?

I think that Brandon and Captain Bob have a lot in common. They’re both just a pair of big-mouthed bullshitters.

Give my best to the friends & family, Lebob.

  31. When I said family I was referring to the teachers I’m related to, and the friends part was referring to the people I would have endured the inadequate teaching with. That would be the only evidence available to support my claims. You do understand why, don’t you? No, probably not.

I’ll admit that point wasn’t blindingly clear in my post, but for someone who portends to higher intelligence you really should have been able to figure that one out.

“That would be the only evidence available to support my claims.”

So there we have it. The end of the line. And what was that “only evidence”? Well, yes, as I indicated in my last post, your “family” does refer to those you are related to. No surprise there. But what does your reference to your “friends” – those you would have endured the inadequate teaching with – possibly mean? Does it mean you actually haven’t endured inadequate teaching with them but only “would” have done so if other unspecified conditions had been satisfied? I hope you are not planning to teach English.

I must admit that even for someone like me who “portends” to higher intelligence failed to penetrate the opacity of your incoherent and ungrammatical posts. I suppose you meant “pretends” but no matter.

    Now, go away.

    A pleasure as always.

  33. A lot of seniors are carrying heavy debt funnygirl. That’s why they work post-retirement and why the people you were referring to can’t make ends meet.

  34. Hey not all of us have big government pensions to rely on buddy. The job market is an open arena. In fact, most employers value an older employee because the work ethic is stronger. A lot of young people can’t get out of bed in the morning or go to work without a wake and bake and then you wonder why the older people have an edge on the job market??? No mystery there. In fact the old Wogdog is thinking of throwing her hat in the ring again. Staying home is boring….and yes, I can use the few extra bucks for sure. Look out young people we might have a little snow on the roof but we ain’t done yet!!!

  35. After reading some replies…& then rereading the bitch, I gotta ask OB , in reguards to “skilled young professionals”
Where did you come up with that load of bullshit ?
What makes you think that just because you’ve graduated from a training program/college/University , that you are now somehow “skilled” ?

I believe ‘skilled young professional’ in the context used by the OB is an oxymoron.
You maybe learned, you could have more than a basic understanding of what you are going to attempt to do …. but that don’t mean you are skilled.

  36. If I’m getting called a dribbler for calling you out on being a douchebag, fine by me.
At least I don’t use 10 words and excessive reference dates/times to say 2 words in total.
    Who’s excessively dribbling now?

  37. Just exactly what is your PhDuh in? Not an applied technical field I bet.

Not philosophy either that’s obvious(you made your point in 1 paragraph) , but something just as useful (liberal arts) I’m sure.

Older, retired people get the jobs because of their superior work ethic, experience, ability, and knowledge. I got 2 out of my 3 last jobs because of it.

I hear that Alberta is hiring.

  38. SOMETHING’S FISHY

“Your retiring, and then taking up another similar position in the company is not being very helpful.” Dr. NoCareer, Ph.D, MBA

Your MBA indicates your university career was job-orientated commerce path, a diploma usually taken after a Bachelor of Commerce and aimed at obtaining a position with a company of one sort of another.

However, your “Ph.D.” is an academic research degree, one normally aimed at obtaining a position in a university faculty and NOT at obtaining a job with a company of one sort of another. That being the case, why are you bitching about the lack of positions in a company?

Something is fishy here. It doesn’t scan.
