Hei Halifax . . . what the F@#K is up with the prices of your rent!? I just moved here from Edmonton, where I was paying $869 for a one bedroom in a low-rise, 5 minutes from West Edmonton Mall. I’m now here looking for a nice one and the prices are about the same! $1000 for your “huge apartment” is a joke . . . who can afford that!? The wages here are frickin low (hmmm, thanks for the $9 an hour jack-ass), your taxes are high (4% in AB), and I get godsmacked by the service charges and prices of everyday commonalities that should be next to nothing. Now, I have two-bits in my pocket after being raped by the deductions on my cheque, and you want how much for that hole in the wall!? Come on . . . unless you’re going to be drilling for oil in the harbour next year, take it easy on the rent so we don’t have to bunk with 10 other people in a house!!!

i’m going to assume that you are originally from NS or somwehere close by, since people don’t usually move here unless it’s for a job (prob not a $9/hr job)… suck it up princess, you MUST have known what you were up against before you packed up all of your goodies and headed east… and if you weren’t aware…. well maybe you should start reading the paper or watching the news.
If I were you, I’d go back to Alberta. Nova Scotia is a loser province with a government that squeezes every red penny you have. The rents are ridiculous and so are the wages. If I was 30 years younger, I would blow this backwater pop stand.
Should have did your research before you moved. Everyone else in Halifax is living under the same conditions and we’re making it work. Go back to Edmonton.
I love Halifax. There’s no place like it. I agree with Average Joe though. It’s not easy making ends meet around here. Hope things get better for you!
You should have done your homework before you moved across the country. I moved 3 months ago from Calgary and it’s been the best thing i’ve ever done. I sure the hell knew what I was getting into coming here, I made sure I either had a well paying job, or sold my condo in Calgary. Real estate stinks out west right now, so I got a good paying job (I’m paid more out here then there), and found a family member to rent my place (I subsidize it about $500/month on top of my rent here). I have a place here that is close to work and downtown and doesn’t cost me an arm and leg. The HST does suck, but at the end of the day I don’t find anything costs more here than out west, actually I find a lot of things cheaper and of better quality, especially groceries and beer, you just have to look. Go to the farmers market on Saturday’s, or take advantage of the independant breweries here, high quality stuff for reasonable coin. Entertainment is far cheaper here too, most restaurants, pubs, and hockey games don’t bleed you dry like out west. It’s unfortunate that you didn’t take it upon your self to know what you were getting yourself into, but I guess that’s what living in Edmonton will do to you.
I’ve been cohabiting here for 20 years, southend/westend/fairview/armdale and have never had a problem. I must be rich, even when I was in university I must have been rich. Even managed pay the rent my first few years washing dishes and my girlfriend slinging slices . Yep. Please fuck off back to where you came from, we didn’t exactly ask you to come here.Please

Just moved to downtown Toronto, god a great flat, huge balcony, not too noisy, great landlord who is super nice / helpful and awesome neighbours. Pay about $100 more a month than in halifax – but I also get the following included in my rent which I didn’t in Halifax: PARKING, Air Conditioning, Heat, Hot Water, Cable, Electricity… the only thign more expensive here is Insurance – so all you “ontario is too expensive” parade rainers, go fuck off.

The thing that will get you the most here is trying to find a one bedroom apartment. If you’re not living with someone else and splitting rent, it can be ridiculous. I live with someone in a $900 apartment in the south end, its a great apartment, and paying $450 each isn’t bad, but if I needed a place to myself, I’d have to be paying $650 and up for it., which is a big jump. SO get yourself a roomie, and find a nice $1000 a month place and it wont seem so expensive.

I was hoping people from here were going to agree that the rent is getting high (did my research, still had to move and live here) . . . WEM is “gross” eh!? Tell that to the 100,000 that shop there a day . . . lol . . . And yes, I’m sure you are extremely happy moving here from Calgary . . . who isn’t when you pay $1000 a month for a 250 square foot bachelor apartment in the NE . . . wasn’t trying to piss in anyones cornflakes here . . .
