I am so sick of seeing signs and bumper stickers saying “Keep Christ In Christmas”. I have some news for all you die hard Christians, not everyone has a religious Christmas holiday. Before you label me an Atheist I will tell you now I consider myself an Agnostic (which is different if you take the time to do a little reading). For many people Christmas has never been a religious holiday. I can’t stand how religious people pass judgment on the “non believers”. I don’t go around advertising my views on God so why do they feel the need to rub their views in my face? Everyone has their own holiday plans, which may or may not include church. Don’t try to ruin someone’s holiday just because they don’t have a Christian Christmas. —Christmas Is What You Make It

  1. ya…we should celebrate an actual person’s contributions…
rather than some made up, pasty, bearded toga champion.

    I’ll be celebrating isaac newton’s b-day again this year…
I should bring in an apple tree.
    that’d be sweet

  2. Well OB it IS THEIR car so they can put whatever bumper sticker they want on it. Regardless if YOUR sick of seeing it or not. Maybe they are just as sick of hearing people like yourself complain. It’s not like they are giving you a sermon or asking you to put it on your car. Get over it!

  3. Likewise it is their holiday to celebrate as they wish. If you don’t like the bumper sticker too bad. Either quit reading them or simply ignore what they say. Like you are tired of hearing their views they are probably tired of hearing your’s as well. To each his/her own. Live and let live.

  4. Piss off. The only signs I have seen are ‘Happy Holidays” or ‘Holiday Greetings’. I never see such signs on Labour Day or Canada Day.
The best sign is ‘Christ is the reason for the Season’.
If you want to feel better about the holiday I think this will appeal to your sensibilities :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXh7JR9oKVE…
Have a nice holiday ( the word is derived from Holy Day)

  5. Well, OP, at its core, Christmas *is* a christian holiday.

While I’m not particularly religious myself, OP, I have to say you’re kind of a hypocrite. You’re bitching because they’re bitching about you celebrating the holidays as you wish, all the while they’re celebrating the holidays as they wish (which, I might add, is where it all started, and don’t give me this pagen argument — traditions, maybe, but christmas itself is a christian holiday) and you’re bitching about that.

  6. Geez, I’m an atheist and I could care less about those signs. People can celebrate Christmas however they want.

  7. You’ve actually seen Xmas related Bumper Stickers?? Those things are like a year round deal aren’t they? These people will look even more foolish driving around with that shit on their car in the middle of August.

  8. You sound like a total hypocrite. Don’t label me but I’ll label you. My way of thinking or no way! Shut The F up.

  9. Another is “Jesus is the reason for the Season.”

Okay, so do I hold Jesus accountable for the idiot shoppers, dumb ass retail staff, impatient drivers, and the dry turkey?

  10. Without Christ, would there be a holiday=holy day for Christians and non-Christians to have off work/school? Do agnostics and atheists put up trees in their homes, exchange gifts and enjoy a dinner of roasted fowl on the 25th of December? If so, why the imitation of a Christian celebration? I know people of other faiths who imitate traditional Christmas customs without the inclusion of Christ. Why? Couldn’t they just as easily imitate Winter Solstice, Kwanza or Hannuka celebrations?

  11. OC, I think the primary reason why non-Christians celebrate Christmas and not some other holiday is that for many years, Western society was predominantly Christian. Over the years, people drifted away from religion but still decided to celebrate Christmas because it’s tradition and breaking tradition tends to piss off some people, mostly from previous generations. It can also be confusing/awkward for small children because all their friends celebrate Christmas and they don’t and they don’t really understand why.

  12. I am a Pantheist, and I dont celebrate Christmas for the birth of Christ as i dont believe in that. And Jesus was not born on the 25th of Decemeber anyway, just another fact that got lost in the religous hype. I celebrate Winter Solstice, but we do have a tree and exchange gifts, has nothing to do with revering or celbrating the birth of a deity being i dont belive in, but rather celebrating my friends and family that I am blessed to have around me during this time and celbrating another season with Mother Nature and the Universe that surrounds us.
I do not think that anyone has the right or the power to say what others should or could believe in. In this day and age whatever ever gets you through the day in a safe and peaceful way, is what we all should strive for.

  13. Ugh, it bugs me to no end how people celebrate xmas but are all “fuck religion”….without religion you wouldn’t HAVE a christmas TO celebrate ffs.

I’m just wondering how many of these people would celebrate xmas if it didn’t involve getting stuff.

  14. not being dead oceanchickpeasis, works for me. one ticket per customer and it’s one-way…wheeee

  15. Non-christians celebrating Christmas is the same as non-Jews celebrating Hannukah. Celebrating something that is not a part of your life seems somewhat odd. Why not call it the winter holiday instead if actual Christians are such a minority? Calling it Christmas seem like hypocrisy if the majority who ‘celebrate’ it don’t include Christ.

  16. As for the bumper sticker the OP takes offense to, last time I checked, our Constitution guarantees freedom of religious expression, so suck it up buttercup.

  17. Actually people can celebrate without religion. See my above comment, it just goes to show that some people who say there would be no Christmas without religion. Why is that. Based on the fact that Christ was soppused to be have born on the 25th of Christmas, which actually there is no proven record that is the actual date of christ’s birth.
You dont need religion to have a reason to celebrate. Again like i have said above some people , actually quite alot of people celebrate Winter Solstice and the changing of the season again. And Celebrate the Universe or Mother Nature, which has nothing to do with the birth of ” Christ”.
And some dont even celebrate that on the 25th but rather on the 21st of Dec, so saying that Christmas or Christ or religion is the only reason we have to celebrate this time of year, is actually not correct at all.

  18. Because the premise of xmas is to celebrate the birth of christ. I HIGHLY doubt there’d be another celebration such as this if it weren’t for the christian religion.

It doesn’t matter how it came to be, it’s hypocritical to celebrate “chistmas” if you don’t believe in christ.

Have a tree, drink egg nog, give shit to your friends and family, fine, whatever, however if you don’t believe in christ, stop celebrating it as “christmas.” (and most of all, don’t bitch people out who DO celebrate the holiday for what it was intended to be).

  19. While I agree with PK’s last line, families manage to get together at Thanksgiving to celebrate each other without getting/giving anything. Isn’t modern Christmas a baby-boomer thing? The excess we ‘enjoy’ was not a part of Christmas before the boomers came along. In our parent’s and grandparent’s day and before, Christmas was less about an abundance under the tree or more about the birth of Christ. What role has commercialism, consumerism and corporate greed played in bringing Christmas to what we do now to observe it?

O’tron, it can also be confusing and awkward for small children living in poverty who have friends/schoolmates who get spoiled at Christmas while they only get disappointed but they really don’t understand why. I wonder what Christ would think about that?

  20. That reminds me, I saw a lady at the mall with a pin on that said “please wish me a merry christmas.” I thought that was sort of interesting. My boss is Jewish and he wishes us all a Merry Christmas (although he has been trying to convert me to Judaism under the pretense that it’s cheaper). I’m not really Christian – I was raised that way – but I still celebrate because of the traditions held over the years with family. Kind of like easter with the chocolate and gifts and eggs having nothing to do with the original holiday. I celebrate that too. I don’t think it hurts as long as no one is disrespecting the people who choose to celebrate religiously.

  21. It’s too close to quitting time on Friday for me to get into any sort of theological debate. 😛

  22. But remember, OC: before this boom, the world was A LOT more religious and Christmas was celebrated for what it was — a religious holiday. Thanksgiving has never had a religion attached to it, really as both my christian, jewish and hindi friends celebrate the holiday.

And for thanksgiving — it’s not an INSANE holiday like christmas. There isn’t a whole month lead up with decorations and lights and that sort of thing. I don’t really think you can compare the two.

I mean, think about all the toy drives that are around this time of year… and the letters to santa canada post responds to, or alllllllll the “christmas” sales it’s all about getting stuff.

  23. PK’s getting a little feisty … and I totally disagree with her but I’m going to just shut up and sit in the corner on this one.

I will not be dragged into another religious debate, I really will not.

  24. I’m atheist but I guess technically I’m still celebrating Christmas. I give and receive gifts, attend dinner with my family, decorate the tree, etc. Doesn’t mean I have to pray or anything. It’s just a fun time to get drunk and eat myself silly. Pretty Kitty pisses me off with her attempt to steal the holidays from me. Fucking grinch.

  25. in an infinite amount of universes, xmas still happens exactly as it does here but is called something else and/or spawned from any other event in the earth’s existence.

in one, on Dec 25 a girl named christma took a shit on Hitler… and the world rejoiced and laid claim that forever, that day would be Christmas holiday

  26. Hey — I never said I was religious here, I’m just stating that Christmas is a Christian holiday.

My Jewish relatives don’t celebrate it for that very reason. I hate to break it to you, Sodey, but what you’re celebrating is a religious holiday. There’s nothing wrong with that, to each their own, I was just stating the hypocrisy of the situation. That’s all.

I think the issue here stems from the label “athiest” being thrown around willy nilly by a lot of people uneducated in the matter. Most would probably classify as agnostic. It just seems like the ‘cool’ thing to do these days is identify as athiest.

    S’all I’m sayin’

  27. “My Jewish relatives don’t celebrate it for that very reason. I hate to break it to you, Sodey, but what you’re celebrating is a religious holiday. There’s nothing wrong with that, to each their own, I was just stating the hypocrisy of the situation. That’s all.”

I’m well aware it’s a christian holiday. I have family and some friends that are christian, and it’s been around me my whole life. It would be kind of silly for me to sit in the corner during dinner, burn presents given to me, etc., right? I don’t see how it’s hypocritical. I’m not claiming to believe in a god for a few days and I don’t take it as seriously as an actual christian might. If other people are having fun why can’t I join in for a bit?

“I think the issue here stems from the label “athiest” being thrown around willy nilly by a lot of people uneducated in the matter. Most would probably classify as agnostic. It just seems like the ‘cool’ thing to do these days is identify as athiest. “

LOL. I don’t think it’s “cool” to be an atheist. It’s “cool” to fit in. Notice all these gangster type people with big cross necklaces trying to fit in? Ignorant people hate me without even knowing me. I’m not one of those christmas tree banning assholes. I’m willing to bet the jackasses banning christmas trees from public are liberal christians and jews rather than atheists. Most atheists I know mind their own business. I mean sure, there’s a CHANCE god is real, but for me to take it seriously I would need angels to fly out of the sky with a hawaiian pizza and introduce themselves to me and fly me up to the clouds.

  28. I get a kick out of the religious-haters who still celebrate holidays. They’re usually the same ones who love Labour Day and Civic Holidays on the account of general laziness. Hypocrisy is next to Godliness.

  29. Atheists are the first folks to put their foot-in-mouth if you have an actual conversation with them. Like they don’t believe in God but believe in ghosts; don’t believe in organized religion but have religious experiences.

And, really, the new “in-thing” with religion is being Agnostic and trying to figure out something that isn’t there.

  30. I hope you’re not referring to me NGF. I don’t “hate” religion, it just isn’t for me. And ghosts are lame. I believe in aliens.

  31. Nah, I wasn’t referring to you, pops. It was about people I know personally who are all, “Fuck Christmas, etc!” but still celebrate the shit in some way or another. Or any holiday for that matter. They have no problem “accepting a gift” though.

    Thanks, PG 🙂

  32. You know what the difference is between an agnostic and an atheist? An atheist can make up their mind and stick with it.

I wonder if the OB refuses his or her Christmas holiday pay and bonus, and Good Friday holiday pay? Nope, didn’t think so.

  33. I doubt god would have mercy on agnostics. If there’s a hell they’re going to be joining me there hahahahaha

  34. Bro Tim: EXACTLY!

This thread reminds me of the Christmas special from The Boondocks first season when Huey and Grand-dad are watching the show about Jesus’ birth. Grand-dad says, “Hear that, boy? That’s what Christmas is all about!” Huey’s reply is wicked: “Actually, grand-dad, Christmas is a pagan holiday. And I would think Jesus hates you for celebrating it.”

For some, Christmas is a play on the birth of several other religious figures and pagan heroes (i.e., Dionysous of Greece) and also the pagan-Roman holiday that was Saturnalia; a 12-day party where men would drink, fight, puke, play pranks, beat their wives and have sex with one another.

  35. I predict that when Christianity crashes and burns like the Hindenburg, Christmas will be renamed Santa Day and everyone will be required to spend $1500 each year to help the economy. I’m an agnostic (leaning toward the teaching of the Cosmic Muffin) but I’m not gonna shit on other people’s beliefs unless they cross the line of insane – like worshiping the Baby Jebus’ big toe. Then let the verbal shrapnel fly. Lighten up, OP, let people have their fun in whatever way that they choose. Thank your anal hairs that you live in a society where so many cultures can follow their own religious celebrations without fear of persecution.

  36. Thanx, Painey, I’ve been doing my Xmas shopping with great pleasure the last few years. Once the kids moved out, the holidays have been a blast with lots of visits and great food. I still like a real tree, it’ll probably be a midget this year because Hub-Unit and I both have leg issues. Most of the people who are sour turds during the holidays don’t want to spend the money. I believe in setting a budget and not going over. Shit, some lean years, I baked a shitload of heh-heh cookies for my friends due to a generous benefactory of incredible leaf. Man, my buddies loved that Christmas.

  37. nice. we still do the real tree but it gets smaller every year. there are enough hairy beasts to try and get around…i’ll be your buddy^^

  38. Christ may be the reason for the season but the stuffing is the reason for the turkey. For me anyways. /shrug

I am just happy I get some days off to rest and recharge my batteries. 🙂

  39. stuffing…yes. i have been doing an impromptu poll of late. it seems to be number one, turkey is low on the scale. i need to make two kinds this year, me pa cannae eat bread. it’s all good sweet gnome

  40. I get a couple of stuffed turkey breasts – man, they’re good and no carcass to deal with. You’re right – stuffing is incredible!

  41. I love the socializing – and, forgive me, the cheezy music – with the exception of Little Drummer Boy – fuck, I hate that song.

  42. Who cares about Jesus freak bumper stickers, signs, flags or whatever the message is conveyed on. After 35 years of watching commercials I can ignore just about anything, especially anything relegious. Also there is absolutely nothing relegious about Santa, unless he was the little mentioned 13th apostle.

  43. other than being a gigantic pain in the ass, christmas time is a big commercial venture, geared at making parents look like monsters if they don’t get their kids everything, in every fucking ad they see on t.v., papers, or anywhere.

  44. I don’t celebrate Christmas but I do help my mom celebrate it “secular not religous”. I will decorate and buy presents. What I don’t like is the sack of fucking shit that drove me home in a taxi trying to push his atheist believes on me. I don’t do that to any one else. I expect the same in return. Jesus Freaks are allowed to express their holiday just don’t shove it down my throat. Most people I know that are Atheists are very nice except this fucking asshole. To sum it up don’t shove your believes on someone else, keep it to yourself!

  45. so umm OP let me get this straight, the Christians held you down and rubbed bumper stickers on your face?? Cause I would be a bit pissed too.

  46. I’m celebrating the feast of the son of Isis, which just so happens to fall at the same time as christmas…but it predates christmas by about 2400 years ,so not that I mind the christians have stolen my holiday & renamed it…I would just like to see a credit to Isis in a foot note somewhere ~;)
Let the gluttonous feasting & raucous partying commence , oh yeah !

  47. Let’s share our stuffing recipes 😀 Mine is sauteed onion, mushroom, and celery. I know my friend makes one with raisin and rum. What are yours?

  48. no i’ve never seen that, thank you. it was very funny/sad. the whole clan are huge python fans. we starting listening to them on vinyl

  49. i use onion, savoury, sausage meat and bread or potato. sometimes i’ll add nuts and grapes. i find too much sage makes it taste like soap. i use an egg and some stock to bind it. i have had stuffing made from rice and ginger, different but tasty

  50. The grocery store does mine – as in stuffed turkey breast – but yours sounds terrific. One tradition we have is for Hub-Unit to make up Christmas puddings from his great-gran’s 100 year old recipe – even uses real suet (animal fat – yummers) and boils it in unbleached linen – he adds a shitloads of raisins, pecans and walnuts, then whips up a hard rum sauce that would make your liver quiver.

  51. My buddies and I used to watch Python during the early days of cable when it came on PBS late at night, followed by Stacey’s Country Jamboree on WLBZ Bangor. With a couple of bottles of Mateus and a few spliffs you could generally piss yourself laughing.

  52. I didn’t know that you could use potatoes instead of bread for stuffing…we use flavoured croutons. I wish I had a 100 year old recipe too!

  53. I’m rather fond of the traditional Newfoundland-style stuffing. Here is my oft-requested recipe: Home-made bread diced fine, diced onions, salt & pepper and generous amounts of (Mt. Scio) savoury…mmmm…mmmm…mmmm.

  54. Sure mix some potato with bread… I like using different types of bread, white, whole grain/multigrain, onion…my nana used to cook up the gibblets diced small & add that to the stuffing. I perfer sausage…I end up eating the gibblets as they cook “I can’t help it”. I dislike raisons & too much sage does taste soapy to me as well…I find the same problem with food with lemon grass or cilantro…tastes like there’s dish detergent slipped into the meal !

  55. oh don’t get me started on cilantro. i boil the giblets and use that water and the potato water in the gravy. the hound gets the giblets. i like using different types of bread as well. do you cook the onions first oceansis?

  56. Used to put ’em in raw, sister-girl, but lately I’ve developed an affinity for the carmelized ones which are begging for inclusion in this year’s version. I’ll let you know how that works out.

The most memorable stuffing that comes to mind every year was the one served years ago at the festive table of a very dear Canadian thespian friend, who decided by who knows what kind of logic to include a few leftovers, including peas and pasta spirals in his usually fabulous stuffing. We still laugh about that one!

  57. haha, a surprise in every mouthful…carmelized onions *drool* i think that would work well^^just came back from seeing the dogs on quinpool, the danes are always fun to pat. they are such big goofsters

  58. martha stewart would be proud of you guys. i use the bought type stove top, and mix with more bread, rum, whisky, and a dash of s. and p., makes it lively. but as ttfn said, the rolled turkey is better if you don’t have the time or know how to make a simple stuffing.

  59. Caramelized onions make the stuffing taste nice and sweet 🙂 My battle is always about making sure that the stuffing doesn’t come out too soggy or too dry….

  60. That jailbird ain’t got nuttin’ on me dear Suckulous. I could whip her ass in the kitchen without even trying.

  61. NGF, yeah father was Osiris… that festival is where scholars believe the ‘christian christmas’ holiday started & was simply incorperated into that ancient custom…remembering that christmas didn’t start happening until a couple hundred years after jesus’s supposed birth.
Its really just a celebration in the northern hemisphere of the return of the sun…as the shortest day of the year was behind them & days were once again getting longer. So probably was happening even before the Babylonian time period.

  62. Love the Mary Walsh bit, pain-sis, Newfie women Rock! And you are ever so clever with the links, always entertaining. Glad you like the new av, thought it was time for something seasonally appropriate.

  63. the recipes from when i was working. zucotto, triple choc. mousse cake, mascarpone raspberry, praline cheescake. i haven’t made a cake in years. made them for charitable use on my own time, pta especially. i enjoy the bio-chemistry aspect of baking but now it’s when and what i choose to make…serenity now

  64. I once made like a 6 ft. tall croque en bouche for a christmas party at a private club .. it was fairly impressive 🙂

  65. Who cares. I used to be Christian and the issue of keeping Christ in Christmas came up every year. It’s just a reminder to other Christians not to get blindsided by the material part of Christmas and remember the true meaning of it. A celebration of the birth of Christ their savior and to generally be nice and to help other people in need. Calm down OP, no one is passing judgment on you or trying to ruin your holiday or convert you with a godamn bumper sticker. Most Christians are not die hard, most of them are good people who don’t give a shit about whether or not you believe in the same delusions they do.

Jesus Christ, I’m an atheist and you don’t see me pissing myself over some signs and a fucking bumper sticker. You preach about how everyone should be able to celebrate the holidays in their own way but only if you’re not Christian right? Ever stop to think that these signs and bumper stickers are their way of celebrating the holidays? No, because you’re a fucking hypocrite.

  66. Rosie and Donk. Our girls have come home. It’s a Festivus miracle. Screeeee.
Mornin Painey – the Anzacs were fair dinkum luvverly.

  67. Those Anzacs looked like a really good recipe. Glad they turned out delish! I may have to give them a try.

This was an awfully long thread to read all at once, but an interesting one. I love the holidays. And for me it’s Christmas, not Xmas, I’m not a fan of the abbreviation at all. The commercialism bothers me, so I don’t really partake, but I celebrate as much as I can with family and friends. It’s a great time of year, no matter what your religious views are.

  68. yes, this thread is getting up there…heyo ralmn, if you do make those cookies-make sure to measure the butter correctly. the recipe calls for 10 tbsp which is 5 oz. the first batch i made were great, the second one i messed up. one tray in the oven at a time works best. thank you for your attention *squack*

  69. i know there are those who walk amongst us, that possess great knowledge when it comes to vittles…no inquiry will go unanswered

  70. I saw that too! A car with a whole nativity scene on it … I’ve also seen an SUV with the words GUCCI all over it in black big letters, but I’m not actually sure if that was a hallucination :/ It seemed so unreal.

  71. here’s a great idea for dec. 25, let’s all just do our own things and not bother to argue whether it’s religeous or not. to each there own.hanukak, kwanza, christmas, harvest day, or a martian fribulat, who really gives a shit. it is one day out of 365 that we can all be nice to each other,(enter mm).
to me, it’s not a real cheery day, and i don’t care if it comes or not. but that is my own personel demon. as io’m sure everyone has there own problems. so gang, let’s all be nice, and give the bitcher a bit of latitude on this one.

  72. Donk 2…I seen a small car with a christmas tree decorated on the roof ,with working lights, & other christmas themed characters arround it…it even had a small platform across the back bumper with reindeer standing there !

They were going down the blvd, near Costco Saturday.

  73. Yes the term “Christmas” is preferable to “Xmas” because if Futurama is an accurate predictor of the future, then Xmas is bad.

  74. There was a car parked in the lot near the office with giant stuffed animals strapped to the roof the other day. It was bizarro. What happens when it rains? When they want to drive on the highway? Poor stuffed toys 🙁

  75. Man, I love the house hippo – if they ever breed and sell pygmy hippos, I’ll be first in line with a Dr. Scholl’s footbath tucked under my arm.

  76. LOL – SOBova can always tell when that commercial is on because she’ll hear a plaintive cry of ” It IS real” from the living room. >: )

  77. I’m just putting this idea out there, and I know it may be unpopular but I’ll risk my popularity. What if Tim’s had a deposit on their cups? Seriously, what if they did?

    I’d be impressed.
