So if the Canadian government determines that it is against the law for the words ‘under God’ to be on our money, then, so be it. If all government offices and services would work on Christmas, Good Friday and Easter. It shouldn’t cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be ‘politically correct’. In fact…I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God…) Because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day.
If this idea gets to enough people, may be our elected officials will stop giving in to the ‘minority opinions’ and begin, once again, to represent the ‘MAJORITY’ of ALL the Canadian people. Ok. first and foremost I was raised in a very cathlic home and as near as i can tell thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. Secondly, screw that shit. I love the fact that being a Satanist eans I am free to work on days like christmas when no one else wants to and that i get payed extremly well for it. While I wouldn’t mind seeing All the yuppie and government tools working sundays or having a decent weeked bus and LC schedual, I would never give up my stat holidays. I would hate to infringe on the religious rights of christians to practice thier Religion, I’m just thinking that maybe the government is wise to not let them have every goddamned (please forgive the expression) facet of my life. They have given the Christians enough of my life to keep said christians from bitching that the government is trying to grind them out.

Fuck that. “Sunday was set aside as a day to worship god” so if you don’t believe in god, you should have to work 7 days a week!? What about the mailman who does believe? Point is… Religion was created as a system of control. Even in the dark ages, the lovely parts of history where anyone who dared say the earth is round were persecuted – even then… We knew it was good to have a day off… Now that we’ve evolved to a point where people don’t need to read stupid fairy tales to obey the law, it’s still good to have a day off.
In a sense, they are appealing to the majority by what they do. We are a multicultural society, and as such, have to respect that not everyone is religious, but at the same time we have to respect the huge number of people that do celebrate such holidays (we also have to respect minority holidays, but it’s much easier to let a group of people that is low in numbers to have a planned day off)
And considering all the sale increases that go into these holidays, I’m no math brainiac, but I suspect that tax payer dollars aren’t overly on the increase as a result of these holidays.

Coming from a pure white Canadian, and atheist, I say let’s start celebrating Snake Whacking Day like on the Simpson’s. I personally don’t care which holidays are celebrated or when, as long as everybody gets their fair share of days off. Who cares what the reason is. Many Christians don’t do very many religious things on Christmas, they just insist on having it off because they always have. But the poor workers at the drug stores, gas stations and Blockbuster still have to work on those days. Emergency & hospital staff know no such thing as holidays, regardless of how religious they might be. The government just happens to be one of the better places to work and people are often jealous of the decent pay with little stress for many of the jobs. I used to work for the federal government then gave it up because I was too bored.
I also think over the coming decades, as multiculturalism increases in Canada, we will see less and less Christian traditions followed, and yes, this will spill over into the law further again. The Christian population is just decreasing so much faster than the rate that other cultures are increasing. It’s a form of social evolution people will just have to get used to, or do something more concrete about it. Writing doesn’t seem to do crap.
Just because the Feds decree to remove God from various things, does not mean employees should lose holidays. Odds are, the majority of those employees will be celebrating, because Christianity is still the major religion in this country. If they want to start implementing holidays for other religions, to be inclusive, they’d still have to allow all workers to have those holidays, as well. Just the way it works. Personally, I like having the occasional day off with pay that means the whole office is closed, whether I celebrate the day as its intended, or not, is irrelevant. How many of you gladly take Remembrance Day off, but don’t attend any veteran’s services to acknowledge them? Does that mean you shouldn’t get the day off? How ‘bout New Year’s? I haven’t been out on a New Year’s party in years, but I still like having Jan 1st off.
Most of us “government tools”(thanks for that insult, way to judge people you don’t even know) have to work the standard work week because somebody decreed it years ago that that is when businesses(offices, mostly) should be open to be able to connect with each other at a predictable time. I agree there are some government services that could benefit the public by being available on weekends, but for the most part, we have to work the standard work week because we have to be able to do business with other businesses, and those other businesses are also only open Monday to Friday. You’re only thinking from the public services point of view, there’s way more offices that would have no benefit being open on weekends or holidays.
And OP, no tax dollars would be saved, we’re paid on those days whether we’re here, or not.

I have always been pissed by the christmas hoildays…it FUCKS up trying to get the job done & it is just another damn day…not that I disagree with holidays, like Canada day for example & if it is felt by the majority we get 1 holiday a month then fine but take all of the religious BS out of it.
Despite the cut and paste, I think the OP is onto something, lets get rid of all the stat quasi-christian-religious holidays, maybe even some Sundays off and put them together at the end of July/early August so we can get a stat week or two off when it’s nice out without using vacation. Then, we can use our actual vacation in January of February to fly away when it’s cold/cheaper and not peak fly times for the rest of the planet.
Just in case this isn’t one of those cut ‘n’ paste form letters:
1) You, OP (and everyone else, including gov’t employees) are free to worship god or not worship as you choose.
2) It is not government’s role to endorse the worship of god, or any particular religion. Government permits freedom of worship, but must itself be strictly “non-denomonational.”
3) It is in poor taste to write the name of a deity (Zeus, Allah, God, Zoroaster, etc.) on something as vulgar as money, and it is technically idolatrous to build a replica of a religious concept (ie. the 10 Commandments) and have it placed on government property as a “sacred” object of veneration.
That is why, in Canada, we don’t do those things, although in your own home and on your own time you are free to do whatever you want.
And the holidays aren’t about God all his drama anymore. To the majority of people they are about making money, over eating, and getting presents, all the vices the church preaches to us to avoid, while they rape little kids. You took the holidays from the pagans and made them your own, and capitalism took the holidays from you and did the same thing… so fuck off.
