Yo BC, enough already with the crocodile tears and “mock” sorrow. Some guy from a country you couldn’t even find on a map dies doing a dangerous sport the he clearly loved… fine. It’s sad for those who knew him, but they knew the risks. Stop with all the weeping on television and silly talk of dedicating the entire games to this dude!

Where were your tears when hundreds of Georgians were slaughtered in the aggressive Russian military action a few years back?

And worst of all is the way this guy’s death is being used as a magician’s “misdirection” to take attention away from the REAL Olympic news: rampant doping by athletes, Out-of-control commercialization, censorship, grotesque (and predicted) cost overuns, and mostly:

Why was a winter Olympics awarded to a rainforest?!

I can almost see the ‘weeping’ VANOC execs peering cautiously through their fingers to make sure everyone’s watching THEM, and not the massive protests…

  1. who really cares about this shit anyway? does it put money in our pockets here in n.s., or does it do anything for our businesses, no. so fuck it to hell.

  2. I’m more concerned about the douchebag protesters that are smashing up storefronts and hiding behind masks, than about that issue.

I remember the Russian invasion of Georgia, and honestly there was a significant international outcry, including our country, from what I remember. But hey, let’s not take facts into account huh?

  3. You mean that aggressive military action sparked by Georgian troops invading Ossetian territory in an attempt to reclaim it, who were also charged with war crimes just like the Russians? Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch slammed both sides of that conflict you douchecanoe.

But you’re right, let’s just ignore him dying before a major world event on international television and get back to spraying vinegar in the pig’s faces. Then we can go trash the HBC outlet.

  4. I find the antics of the Protestors to be superior to anything the olympic games might offer.

As for the dead athelete, if as everyone says the Olympics are for the very best atheletes there are…if you get killed competing, and no others do, IMO you just weren’t up to the high standards of the other participants, or it was one of those fluke things that just happens !

But I do wonder how did all those large steel columns happen to be where anyone coming off that corner, & losing control, would being flying into ?!?

  5. Get your fucking shit straight if your gonna stand on a soapbox! Georgia , backed by the US , attacked Russian troops in a sneak attack, and the Russians retaliated.

THAT’S A MAIN STREAM NEWS ARTICLE TOO!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/762355…

“The Georgian government launched a major military operation into Tskhinvali [the capital of South Ossetia] and other areas of that separatist region,” she said.

“Regrettably, several Russian peace-keepers were killed in the fighting,” she added.

  6. At the end of the day, no matter how much mock sadness and weepy Olympic execs we see on the TV…this death is the best thing that could have happened:

The world’s attention is on the “luge”. Suddenly the Olympics has “edge” again!
“”Hurry up, kids, the “luge” is on!!””
    “‘YAYYYYYY!!!!”

    (snicker)

Of course, for THAT to happen, someone needed to die, or at least be paralyzed..and this guy…BAM! perfect! Kinda takes the focus off the drug doping, the ‘fixed’ scoring in ice skating, lame sports like the biathlon, and all the other BS.,

If there was NO ‘percieved’ danger, who would bother to watch it? “Gather ”round kids…we’re a favorite in the egg and spoon race!”

But here’s the best part, by far:

“The men will now be starting from the women’s gate…”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Plus, they’ve made it worse by shortening the run!

WTF?! How’s it gonna feel to win THAT gold, eh? “Good job Klaus, here’s your medal, we had to make it a wee bit smaller, you understand…and, erm, your name has a *star* by it in the books, sorry…I mean you’re not REALLY the fastest in the world, are you?”

…and now they’re “doing something to the ice”?!
Whaaaa…? They’re gonna sand it or what?

Oh boy, that’ll be fun! Why am I reminded of John Cleese swashbuckling his way through the castle..”Erm, can someone give me a push?”

    Hahaha…hilarious

  7. They had 5000 test runs on it I thought I heard.

I wondered too why there were thick beams in a run-off area. At 145 kph, I’m not sure how big a run-off area you would need to be safe.

  8. Luge, downhill skiing, astronaut, king crab fishing, there are inherent risks that are accepted by the participants.

  9. Russia scares the shit out of me to this day – as Winston Churchill so eloquently put it: ”[Russia] is a riddle wrapped inside a mystery within an enigma”.

  10. Don’t be such a douche. Seriously. We should be proud to have the Olympics in Canada, did anyone see the Opening Ceremonies? It was the coolest in history; spoken word poetry, Ashley MacIsaac? COME ON! CANADA IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD: we should have more national pride than this. Yes, there are reasons why the Olympic Execs et al blow chunks, but it’s not about them, it’s about the kids from Cranmore, Chicoutimi, and NOVA SCOTIA who have been working their whole lives for this moment. Support them.

    CANADA RULES.

  11. It is only in the past few years that I have taken any interest in the Olympics.

Not being much of a sports person, I didn’t really get what it was all about. And, like everyone else, I disliked the negative aspects that are inherent in an event of this scale: the commercialism, the cheating, the corrupt judges.

Still not a fan of most of the Summer events, but I have to say that the Winter events have really grabbed my attention recently. The skiing, the snowboarding, the luge, the speed skating and the figure skating—all thrilling and beautiful.

The most important “message” of these competitions is not just about winning a medal within the arcane world of a specialized sport. It’s about doing something—ANYTHING—really, really well.

Sure, in the bigger picture, the times and scores are not relevant to our daily lives, but just like any other activity—music, art, writing, movie-making, architecture—it is a pleasure and inspiration to see something done by both men and women at the very highest level of their ability.

I’m going to keep watching. I think Vancouver is doing a great job putting on what is admittedly a monster event, and I am very happy for the Canadians who have the guts to put themselves out there on the world stage.

  12. I’m all about the speed skating…
they fly down the ice and make 3km in just over 4 mins…
    that’s retarded fast.

short track is even crazier, staring at bumms until the last couple laps and flying by to win by a half skate length… crazy fast.

  13. Hope they broadcast it LIVE, uninterrupted. That should get the ratings up. Now, back to The Simpsons.

  14. Just like watching Gilles Villenueve fly through the air with the greatest of ease was good for car racing, the dead Georgian has put the “luge” on the map of “cool”…which is amazing when you consider how stupid it looks…

  15. Yeah, my bud out there is a volunteer, and a bunch of them got to try it…from the “bunny hill” level, and on a special sled I assume…’cause my bud, I wouldn’t trust him on a toboggan…
They even got videos of themselves doing it as well…

  16. oh yeah baby…it may even hold up against the sleigh ride that is the north atlantic. watch it once if you must then turn away
