You go into work everyday at the factory, the store, the mill, etcetera. You do back-breaking work all day that leaves you too physically drained to play softball in the evening. Your boss doesn’t listen to you when you say a machine needs maintenance, then yells at you when it breaks down. You get laid off in the winter, and apply for government assistance. You fill out tons of forms, and wait a month before you see a cheque.

I go in for my first day at the government office. I fill out tons of forms and don’t see a paycheque for a month. You come into the office on the 30th, angry at me because Y has happened “without warning”. You’re holding a letter dated the 1st that says “if you don’t do X by the 25th, Y will happen.” I do stressful work all day that leaves me too mentally drained to read a book.

And even I’m not immune to all the frustrations and runaround of dealing with the government.

P.S. I have been a physical labourer and despite the aches and pains, I found it an easier job than Public Servant.

  1. agreed. i enjoyed doing manual labour more than i enjoy interacting with customers. a LOT more, sure i was tired, but at the end of the week i could go to a party/bar/concert and enjoy myself. now i get off work, and im out of interaction energy for the day, yet i can go and bike for 10 kilometres. not fun.i wish i could have my olde job back, just so i could stop smiling to everyefingone who walks through the door.

  2. Read “Then we came to the end” by Joshua Ferris, even if you’re time is unpermitting.. If you like manual labour more, than do it.

  3. Haven’t you learned anything from watching Office Space? You have seen Office Space, haven’t you? If not, I recommend it. You will relate, then you’ll do as I did and get out of being a cubicle jockey.

  4. I’ve often wished I could go work on a construction site… unfortunately they take a little too kindly to my type ’round there… skeeter…
