I noticed in this weeks Coast that there are a number ads. for bargain basement drinks….doubles, triples, picthers, etc….now I know the bars want to make money….but aren’t there better ways of doing it??? Does this not encourage people to over-indulge?

  1. Oh boy, another year of drunken, dumbass university kids puking up and down Arygle Street aka Retch Road. Instead of smoking receptables downtown, there should be barf buckets every six metres. And the bar owners should be made to clean them.

  2. Ha. I remember back in the ‘good old days’ stepping over a puddle of student vomit downtown. How did I know it was student vomit? Firstly, there was a pub crawl scheduled…but the kraft dinner chunks were a dead giveaway.

  3. i don’t even bother going downtown on weekends, because of all the knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing alpha males, many of whom are jacked-up on cheap booze & pent-up testosterone.anyone who says that plying university kids with cheap drinks does not encourage binge drinking is a lying sack of shit, and probably a nightclub owner. it’s also well known that alcohol abuse (and that’s exactly what binge drinking is) induces unruly (and often violent) behaviour in many people, particular among the aforementioned group. the proprietors of halifax’s drinking establishments KNOW this, but all they care about is the $$$ that pours in, as drunk patrons are relieved of their cash and senses.from the proprietor’s perspective (and the alcohol industry in general), selling cheap drinks is better than NO drinks, and the more cheap booze the customer consumes, the more likely he is to keep drinking & spending. so by the end of the night, the customer’s money still ends up in the nightclub’s till, even if they had to ply the customer with more (cheap) drinks to get it. except now, the enebriated patron, who is excessively drunk from all the cheap booze, is likely going to be out of control and at some point will be ejected onto the streets. so when closing time rolls around, the downtown core becomes polluted with drunken fools, many of whom are unruly, loud, violent and looking for fights.

  4. When I was in post secondary; if we didn’t hit up a bar for cheap drinks, there was a beer garden, or there was a dorm party, or there was good ol drinking in an apartment some place lol. IF we wanted to drink we found a time and a place regardless of what the bars were selling. We still wound up at the bars just as drunk. Thankfully the company I kept weren’t Weekend warriors so we had little trouble. There’s lots of places to get cheap booze than to blame it on a bar selling cheap drinks.
