I am hearing news reports these days about the potential death of our national door-to-door postal service, apparently because the volume of snail mail is doing a nosedive. Of course, email and ecommerce and e-everything else have played the biggest part in putting the boots to paper mail. But Canada Post and ultimately, its overseers, are hastening the demise. More and more often, I fail to receive mail from family and friends sending me birthday or Christmas cards (does someone in the delivery stream suspect such cards are likely to contain money?). And trying to speak to someone about such a problem is a problem in itself. Trying to contact real humans on the phone to report or discuss issues can result in an endless game of telephone tag via answering machines. I have lost my trust in the system and have resorted to couriers, expensive as they can be. —Not Going Postal

it’s not good… how do we get income tax slips, notices from hospitals or other important things or how about people who still like to send cards to people for their birthday who are too young or too old to know how to use a computer? .. not everyone is ‘in this century’ as you so ignorantly commented..Some people like the old-fashioned way. What about writing to family members who are incarcarated.. do you think they are going to love that they have that less communication with family and friends?

A friend of mine worked at the post office for 30 years. Floor hockey with the parcels was always a favourite activity among employees back in the day. He used to say the Hustler mags were often tattered and torn (from being passed around) by the time they reached a subscriber’s mailbox. I’m sure it’s improved since then. I won’t be sorry to see snail mail go. Such is progress.
First it was Canada Post, next and hopefully soon, Metro Transit drivers.
I think the government should buy Canada post, just like all the other dying industries in this country. Lets fire torpedo’s full of money at this sinking ship, just like Air Canada.

well.. it saves paper which i guess saves trees (though with the prevalence of good quality recycled paper out there now, I don’t even know anymore..). Of course a lot of people will be out of a job when all things postal finally do die.
I like getting snail mail though. It makes me feel like a girl in the books I’m always reading. Even when the mail has a window on the envelope.
Now that letters are mostly a thing of the past and online bills are a thing, there really isn’t a reason for a postal service to exist.

In the 50+ year I’ve been around, I have always received snail mail sent to me. The likelihood it happens is low, let alone statistically unlikely to happen over & over again, unless:
1. it’s not being sent, as promised
2. it’s sent to an OLD address with no forwarding service

Aren’t welfare cheques still sent in the mail? I think it’s good that they have to waddle down to the bank (or the payday loansharks) and cash’em.
I send several postcards to my nephew every month since I moved away. Emailing such a young child is kind of pointless, and extremely meaningless in his eyes. My daughter receives lots of parcels and letters from home. I subscribe to four magazines, one of course being the NG which I keep every issue of for future reference. Registered mail is also a must have at my work. Sure, FedEx can do it, but thats still snail mail, right?
Canada Post is relevant and serves a great purpose to many, they just need to evolve and quite possibly downsize. I’m not sure how they would do it, but they’re not dinosaurs with no purpose and should be extinct as so many suggested.
PS- Harper, you can get direct deposit for welfare, if the deadbeats have an account that is.
Of course they could get rid of half the carriers by doing a route every two days.

I actually figured they banned my IP, so I kept trying to make sure.
I don’t see why the cost of something that the majority of us can, or already do without, should be paid by the public. (I understand that there are lots of things that taxes pay for that a minority of people use, but I think this is a little different because nobody NEEDS it anymore) Most of us can do without the mail, although tax time would be interesting.
They need to gradually scale it it down/downsize it if it’s costing us that much money (I don’t know how much it’s costing us but I’m pretty sure it’s more than we want to pay) I’m sure most people would rather pay per use for the few times per year they use it and see their income taxes go down.
I agree with Bro Tim, we don’t need it delivered 6 days a week, but of course that idea makes way too much sense for anyone with the feds to touch it with a 12 foot clown pole.

He actually didn’t at the time, and it was soon after a pretty scary ride for him I believe!! The surfer is Mike Parsons and he caught that wave during the filming of ‘Billabong Odyssey’ while out on a tow surfing session (I think he also won an award for that ride!!)….I believe this is one of two or three waves tossed around as the ‘Biggest Wave Surfed EVER!!!’…..absolutely cool to watch, for sure, but also completely TERRIFYING–way more scary than sharks!….given ALL that power, I don’t know if I’d ever be brave enough to tackle that much ocean…except, of course, in my head!! Trust me, though, even baby waves (definitely waaaaaay less than 100ft) are still a THRILL!!!!
