Do 17 year old kids have nothing better to do than to prey on seniors? Apparently not. And I suppose that makes them feel like big men, tough guys. What a cowardly act.

While it’s very sad and tragic that this happened, please don’t apply one fucked-up 17-year old’s behavior to all 17-year olds.
Some bright spark is almost certain to reply that Capital Punishment, as a deterrent, doesn’t work particularly well in the U.S., either. It does however deter the scumbag in question from ever harming anybody again, in or out of jail. There are powers that the state needs to possess, not in the certainty that they are competent to have them, but in the faint hope that they won’t fuck it up too much.
So, while my heart says fry the bastards, my head says that’s a power that the state should not have.

It seems these days a lot of parents are afraid of their own kids and compensate by giving them way too much freedom. I did some shinanigans in my day, but knew the boundaries. I am sorry for that elderly man and his family, that’s incredibly disgraceful,one of the saddest most terrible things I have ever read. and I hope they don’t get a slap on the wrist. They will never learn if people continue to give them unearned freedom, they will just keep pushing. I just can’t imagine what would propel someone to do that to a defenseless elderly man. They do the crime, they should do the time.

I’ll never understand how going easy on kids for shoplifting candy and vandalism was also applied to murder, rape, and aggravated assault. Grown up crimes deserve grown up times. Sure, keep the identity of some kid secret if they just broke a window, but once someone of ANY age shoots someone their picture should be published so parents can warn their children to stay away from them and so I can watch my back around them.
I don’t know much about these particular kids other than two have been charged with first degree murder. The Young Offenders Act was enacted as a way to give kids a chance to resurrect their lives and go straight if they fell off the rails. On the contrary, the lightness of the sentences do not protect society as a whole or “correct” because they ARE young offenders.
Science may be the eventual answer here. Teenagers are children in the sense that their brains aren’t fully developed, in fact the frontal lobes are not fully connected. The frontal lobes are key to impulse control and considering consequences.
The development of the frontal lobes can be measured with brain scans. So if a kid shows a propensity towards anti-social, risk-taking behavior in the form of criminal activity, their length of incarceration may be depend on the development of their brain.
So they should be institutionalized at least until the brain is developed, about the early to mid-twenties I believe. Then a gradual initiation back into society.
So I suggest a compromise, keep their indentities private but lock them up until they are mature neurologically speaking. This is for violent crimes.

Interesting position most take here…..I for one do not think 17-18 year olds wake up one day and decide to do this on their first time out ……My first concern is what red flags were showing and for how long and who missed it…and it is the usual suspects…parents , community complacency, child welfare, police, medical and school….all have a responsibility to make sure children who grow into youth have what they need to secure that transition is as smooth as possible…..who and what contributed to this event where an innocent elder was murdered for chump change…….are YOU responsible…….blaming these youth is the easy thing to do….
