I really like The Coast. I think it provides a great service to Halifax and lots of interesting articles. I’m awfully glad for all the years I’ve been able to read it for free! I think it’s fine if they receive feedback in the form of praise or criticism, though, as that’s presumably part of how they’ll shape their paper to their audience.
I have to say I found it surprising that there were full page cigarette ads in the the coast, but when I thought about it more, I figured it’s probably an ideal place for them. It generates revenue for a free publication, it’s aimed at people who can decide for themselves whether or not they want to smoke, and the advertisement isn’t being sneaky. Same with the beer ads.
Here here!! Anyone who complains about free stuff deserves a kick in the ass with a frozen steel-toed boot!!
Besides, it’s much softer on the ass than that fucking Chronically Horrid.
I have to admit that I pretty much disagree with the Coast’s editorial slant most of the time, but it frequently “does journalism” better than the local non-free paper. I’m happy to put up the ads…

Anyway, the point is that companies like Keith’s have the advertising dollars to keep this paper free. So if you don’t like what their selling take the fucking ad and rip it out.

Isn’t that what we need government for, to save idiot Canadians from themselves? Obviously there are ethical concerns in such advertising and since everybody has their price “for the money” falls on otherwise ethical ears. Nobody wants the Coast to not make money and operate but nobody wants them to “sell out” to do it, do we? If the Coast operated some boarder-line maybe-too-young porn site to finance their business would we get behind that too? A lot of porn is legal in Canada… why not slip it in where the money’s most “needed”? Social ethics. What a conundrum.

The ‘reporters’ are horrible and uneducated, and the movie revues incoherent and childlike. The only saving grace is the ability to come here an tell you how bad it sucks.
The presumption that people should not have opinions, or at least not express them, because nothing was paid for a paper that has provoked a reader’s response, is ignorant, indifferent, and irresponsible to the healthy development of society.

just my opinion…. but half the bar ads are pretty close anyways so it wouldn’t have much of a shock factor.
