I saw your advertisement for improved living space saying this and that is better…The funny thing is I have lived here for the past year, so I am thinking, “Are these guys on crack?” I wait for the elevator for 15 minutes! Your clothes are still wet after three attempts in the dryer but it’ll still increase to $2 for each attempt in September! I don’t know if anyone else will notice the amount of fireworks shot sideways out of an apartment building but I sure as fuck did… every fucking weekend. Oh and not to mention the rancid smell from the first three levels like a waste disposal/landfill. So, about this new and improved shit, I would love for you to jack my rent in September, and hey, fuck, why not? We’re students, we can afford it. —Sublet Available

  1. Ohhhhhh, PK, those apartments are stank! That whole building is pretty stank. My hair salon is in that building and I often wonder what they were, thinking moving to there…

  2. You are in the tower on fenwick street aren’t you? I am guessing by the fireworks shot out and the wait for the elevator. I live near the tower and have seen the fireworks shot out of the various balconys.

  3. The space that place rents as a restaurant used to (maybe it still does for all we know) have a rat problem, Cannatell.

The rents are disgustingly high, and the whole building is the shits. But, for some reason, it’s a “status symbol” to live there if you’re a student, so as long as the kiddies keep on paying, nothing will ever change. I mean — have you SEEN the window treatments in 90% of the windows? Actually, probably more than 90%. They’re disgusting and low rent. Half are just blankets nailed into the wall to cover the windows. I remember waiting for the bus across the street one night and looking up trying to find a decent set of window treatments and finding none.

And YES, probably the fenwick street apartments. They were a hole before the “rennovations” and it’s still a hole. And it’s also featured on the bed bug registry 😉

  4. Nah, the restaurant seems to be closed now. However, half of the establishments in Halifax have rat problems, don’t they?
Either way, I don’t often grab a bite at my hair place so I’m good. 🙂

  5. Ooooh I am looking for an apartment again close to downtown/south endish! Any places I should stay clear of besides the two already mentioned?

  6. mel, i now there are a couple of empties here, but i think they may be rent out already. my place is cool, and clean, and fairly quiet, just the way i likes it. tried to get rosie in, but the poochies were a nogo. no pets, but most of us do have them, all indoor. mail me, and ill give you name and number. you can hide a cat, but not a doggie. if he asks, you have none. gary_more@hotmail.com

  7. LS,
    is ‘fairview’ close to downtown?

a 2 hr walk is not ‘close’ by my definition.
though with the savings in rent, you could get a bus pass and commute the 15-25 mins or so it takes to get to south end.

  8. Haha, it’s funny, I was going to add a disclaimer to my comment that went something like this:
“No LS I don’t want to live in your shitty Fairview building”. Downtown/south end is NOT Fairview in any way… yes, yes, I know you don’t lock your doors and it’s like a great big family! Give it up already, Fairview is not a desirable place to live.

  9. Other option would be Dartmouth close to the ferry. From what I can tell the rents are much lower than you’d get in mainland Halifax and you’re in walking (+ferrying) distance of downtown Halifax. It’s basically a 10-minute walk from the door of my apartment to the ferry terminal and I could have been a lot closer had I taken more time to look around.

  10. better than any fucking high rise bedbug infested rat hole you will find downtown mel. and not all of fairview is bad, just the upper part of it. where i’m at, nice and peaceful, and i AIM to keep it that way around here. you make fucking noise, you are gone. and if the owner don’t have the balls, i do. too bad so many get the wrong idea of over this side.
but you find your nice litle snug place, and let us all know when you move again in 3 or 4 months. i tried to help, and get a slap in the fucking face, piss on y’all then.

  11. The streets off Quinpool after Connaught are really nice, any of the ones betwixt Chebucto and Quinpool. I love it here. Lots of flats and several small apartment buildings.

  12. Move again in three or four months? I’ve been at the place I’m at now for like 13 months and at the end of my lease, it will be 17 months. I’m not someone who makes a habit of breaking a lease so I don’t know where you were going with that. Not every apartment downtown is high rise with bed bugs either. I’d say most aren’t.

  13. I live in that spot- on Churchill. LOVE this area, and the rent is about the same as a big building (but with twice the character and peace of mind).
