I get it. The protestors were upsetting people and you wanted them out. No, no. I understand. But to wait for days after the decision was made? To do it with a surprise attack? And on Remembrance Day? Of all days? With this weather? With this meaning? You and everyone who was on board with this should be fired. What awful, awful choices. —Floppy Bunny

i have to agree….. the protestors acted in good faith and moved… and then the mayor and his cronies used a legal loophole to act to shut them down…. very very greasy. made me almost want to go down to city hall and protest… then i looked out the window and decided not to…
They should poll the Protests to see if any them actually vote. They were breaking the law, like it or not and the timing such as it was might have been bad but so what. It was just Woodstock without the Bands.
“poll them and see if they vote”
Because otherwise they had it coming. Right?
Let’s poll everyone, and whoever didn’t vote, or fulfill your personal Citizenship Requirements loses some rights.
Cool?
Coun Dawn Sloane said she supported the protest “silently”.
Sorry, Dawn. Sitting there in a secret meeting and saying nothing, while this shit is planned, is NOT SUPPORT.
You’re just another cowardly shill, afraid for her council seat or getting stink eye from Peter Kelly.
WB no I don’t think if someone doesn’t vote they should lose their rights, but not voting then piss and moan about those in power dosen’t work either. End of the day they don’t have the right to break the law either. As far as Sloane goes, I agree with you, of course I’m amazed people keep voting her in.
Actually, whether you like the tactics or not, there was very little trouble when the removal of the tents (and it was the tents that were the problem) occurred.
There is nothing to stop them from going back and demonstrate as long as they don’t bring the tents.
We’re cool, S&W.
I don’t see the coorelation between the politically active(Occupy folks) and not voting. People have been generalizing about them a lot in an effort to blow them off as irrelevant.
Is there anything that shows they vote kess than any non-Occupy people?
The “camping” thing is bullshit.
When the mayor wanted to appear Mayory he brought veterans to the Grand Parade tents and sat and talked about compromise. Then when they left he started talking about how much money the Occupy guys cost the city(Concert Scandal, anyone?). Then on the day we remember those who gave so much so we could protest peacefully, he sends the police, going back on what he said.
What did Capone do? Everything illegal.
What was he arrested for? Income tax evasion.
This sudden talk about “camping” is the mayor redefining the protest into something illegal. And that pisses me off.
They mention “camping” so much, it’s like talking points during an election, where sound bites and empty slogans(and repeated LIES) take the place of actual debate.
The mayor drove a lot of well-meaning on-the-fencers to support Occupy NS.
I doubt I’ll ever get an answer to this question from the Mayor’s office/council, but still – if to camp in a park is against the by-law, why did Mayor Kelly offer the Commons as an alternative to Grand Parade? The protestors (or anyone else) cannot camp in any park, including the Commons, according to the by-law. So why offer it, if it was illegal? And why not state up-front when they were clearing out of Grand Parade that they would not be able to set up tents there again, or in any park, because of this by-law? That was a cheap shot to tear down their tents in such horrendous weather and a horrible overshadowing on a day of Remembrance.
it was bad timing but giving them a week’s notice would have been worse. they would have called up their anarchist buddies from all over the country. tear gas and truncheons would have made better copy, then a bit of mud
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I would love to see all those protesters charged for whatever can be thrown at them. Hope the police searched them for the marijuana they had during their occupation.
Jesus! You’re back!!
Though I support the Occupiers in both their message and their right to assemble and protest, the tent city thing was starting to detract from the meaning of why they were there to begin with. Kelly has come off as a weasel in my eyes. The citizens of HRM elect officials democratically only to have them decide important matters “In Camera”.
They were supposed to be outta there by the 8th!! Totally disrespectful!! I have done my share of protests OP, and the people crowded there are nothing but jackasses yelling about things they don’t understand and then not having the balls to say what they actually plan on doing about it! If their movement was meant to annoy the hell out of other Haligonians, then Kudos! Good Riddance and Grow the Hell Up!!
Here’s a hypocrite

Amen to that Gekko.
And a liar.
Anybody gonna work & vote for Kyle Buott next October ?
yeah i agree. What was happening was retarded, expensive and silly. They had become a corporation that was leeching money off of us just like the rest of them…
But those vets fought for the freedom for any idiot to do any fool thing that he sets his retarded mind to. If i were a vet (and i said this to someone else) I would be upset about what happened.
Mayor Kelly is a hypocritical bitch and should me made to live on his hands and knees like the dog he is.
Nah Chaos, just a nice trip to jail for all the shit he’s been pulling and the money he conned (concert scandal? what concert scandal?)
I find it sad that “breach of trust”, a criminal offense, has as per legal code far lighter consequences when done by a public official than it does when done by any regular folk. This also applies, afaik, to a few other entries in the criminal code. Elected officials, representatives and public figures as they are, should really be held to stricter standards than the common folk. That would obviously include stricter penalties (long stints in jail, SEVERE fines, loss of pension, perma-ban from public office and/or public service, etc.) and judges who aren’t afraid to apply said penalties.
