We just moved here 2 weeks ago and our truck has already been broken into. Apparently your kind of low life breed is looking for a Nova Scotia Vehicle Inspection sticker so you can sell it online. …Maybe you should have checked the license plate before smashing our window in BECAUSE we’re from BC. Asshole.
What’s better yet? You stole our lifeline: our GPS. How the fuck we gonna get to the auto-glass place now? We’ve already got enough shit to deal with having picked up our lives and having moved 6000 km from all our friends and family. —West Coaster that’s not impressed with East Coast Hospitality

Dude,
Sorry your car was broken into – that sucks.
But you can’t find an autoglass place without GPS? Ever heard of a phonebook and a map? Seriously, Halifax isn’t a very big city, you’ll be fine.
Halifax may be a small city but the road system is confusing as hell. I’m from BC as well and my welcome was a broken into apartment and stolen computers, which cut me off from my regular contact with friends and family for a month and a half. I feel for you OP, but not all Halifax experience will be negative…I have been finding that most people are very nice here.
…and now NotSoNewt is a regular commentor, so OP, sorry about your wheels and we look forward to you joining the scrum. Just don’t try making time with Martym, our resident chef from the left Coast. He’s spoken for…Right Newt? >; )
OP, notso, where did you move into? Wow, your neighbourhoods really suck, sorry to hear that. Guess I’ve been blessed with neighbours so nosy that no one dared to break in. Either that or the 75lb burglar alarm that I have.
Yes martym is my future roommate / slave chef. But OP, you and I can scheme on importing him back to Halifax together. If we are successful, you can rent him from me on occasions. 😀
Hugo, I thought it was the neighbourhood too, but the police officer and detective I spoke with after the incident assured me that “it happens everywhere”.
should never leave anything in plain sight. and never , never, think it will be sold online. the cops can check out to see if it belongs to the car or whatever it’s on. i know a guy that bought one a couple years back, got checked at roadside drunk check, cops ran plate and sticker, they charged him and towed his car. 5,000 bucks later, he is still behind.
Sorry about your luck OP. I just moved here 3 years ago and the only thing I’ve had stolen and broken was my heart 🙁 (damn Navy). I lived in a couple of not nice areas, and I have no sense of direction, I have never been broken into and I can find my way around by car just fine. Of course, I’m from a place where crime is an art form. It’s mild here. Just seems bad because it’s such a ‘small’ place, with a smaller population. There is WAY more good than bad. I know BC is the land of milk and honey where the sun shines everyday and nothing bad ever happens, but you are no longer in fantasyland. Sorry again.
What EVER did people do before the advent of the mighty GPS?
OH I KNOW.
They used a fucking map.
Shit.
Yeah, kind of hard to read map while driving. 🙂
With all due respect, NSnewt, you can pull over and make a mental note of “ok, go down this road and turn left…blahblah”….any city I’ve ever been new to I’ve been able to navigate by map. I’ve never gotten lost once 🙂
Plus using a GPS doesn’t encourage you to learn your surroundings. What happens if your car breaks down and you’ve relied on your GPS so you don’t know how to get around in your own neighbourhood? It’s kind of a sad commentary because if anything ever happens to communications in the world (a major disaster that throws out the internet, phone lines, etc…) most are gonna be FUCKED.
With all due respect, PK, not all are so fortunate as to have the kind of memory and spatial ability that are required to read map, memorize the route, and follow the route. Case in point: me. I go into a store in a mall, come out, and turn the wrong way towards my car. Very sad, indeed, but I cannot help it. I used to use the map, but I did get lost a lot of times, which could be kind of dangerous if it was at night time on a lonely road in the middle of nowhere.
I do try, though, and after a few runs, I can drive myself to my workplace etc without the help of the GPS, but if I made a wrong turn (due to detours from construction etc), I risk being lost and driving aimlessly for a very long time before I accidentally arrive at the destination. lol And again, even with a GPS, I find Halifax road systems very confusing.
But yes, we have become so accustomed to all these conveniences and gadgets that we are pretty much screwed if we ever lost them at once.
‘You stole our lifeline’ – ever heard of a paper map?
Ever tried going through Montreal lately with a map. Oh my fudge! Even the GPS was saying oh hell no.
There’s a Stewie Griffin add on for ours, when you miss the turn he belittles you and calls you stupid. It’s a great character builder you know. There’s also a Yoda one … but he’s very cryptic.
Aw, what a bunch of pussies. I’ve navigated Montreal plenty of times with a map, wayyyyyy back before personal computers existed. Jesus, people today are such fucking wimps.
Yes, but a GPS = more efficient.
Donkey, except when it places towns in the ocean. I’ll take a map anytime.
OB, I forgot that there is no crime in BC and cars are never broken into or stolen.
You left your GPS in your vehicle, probably in plain sight. Wow. Get real people. A car window is NOT, I repeat, NOT a magical forcefield that will stop determined or desperate people from getting to your belongings.
As opposed to West Coast hospitality? I’m from NS, and I live in BC. I got my car broken into in Vancouver, and MY GPS was stolen (not in plain sight). Since I’ve been here, I’ve dealt with asshole drivers, and ignorant people who think they are entitled to everything. The place you moved to is way better than the one you came from. DEAL WITH IT!!! Oh, and welcome to Nova Scotia 🙂
PS – GOOGLE MAP JACKASS!!!
hey NSTH I just read your post about roomie/chef ; a little advice I wouldn’t joke about these things cause I WILL come to your home and move in with the slightest hint of encouragement 🙂
I hate car GPS. Lots of people these days have no map-reading ability. Reminds me of this article in today’s herald:
http://thechronicleherald.ca/ArtsLife/1204…
OP, all things are relative i guess.
http://www.thechronicleherald.ca/Metro/120…
Have a donair and get over it. There’s crime everywhere. Just don’t make it easy for the assholes.
Op I love my Tom Tom (Moderator can I say something good about something by name ????)
But if you buy yourself one of theose new phones, the one that starts with ‘A’ as in apple ~;)
It comes with a GPS built right in it….since you will probably have your phone with you, & not leave it in your car, you’ll always have a GPS…& you won’t be responsible for killing shit loads of trees to make unupdatable maps !
Which leaves more trees for us to burn in our wood stoves !
goleafyhabsgo mr. blue and the jays play their last game today. that avatar is something else donkey. merci to calvin and rosie for the links *big sigh*
De nada.
Leafs v. Montreal in 4 days!
This is for martym…you might have to wait until I can make enough money to afford a 3 bedroom place. 😀
Don’t keep your GPS or the cords or the attachment in the car.
3 bedrooms hmm one for me and you and one for the kids? that’s only 2 if my math’s correct NNSNTH 🙂
1 for your kitchen supplies and an industrial size fridge. 🙂
martym, do you have a recipe for chicken soup? This stupid cold will not go away.
Oh, sorry Newt, I hope it was okay for me to ask that 😉
No worries, he may be my future slave but he still has his freedom. I am sorry to hear you have a stubborn cold…I usually eat something with a lot of garlic/ginger. Take care and feel better soon. 🙂
Thanks Newt! Will try that. 🙂
Hi Rosie.

My fave is still Spiced Rum & hot Apple Cider.
Thanks Hugo!
Mmmmm… a spiced rum and apple cider would do wonders right now. Maybe I could actually get some sleep!
Ta again, mon ami <3
So kay moved back two weeks ago?
My point, NSnewt wasn’t really just for you, it’s a point in general: we’ve become over dependent on technology to the point that no one has any survival skills otherwise.
Take a kid’s smart phone away and they drop a load in their drawers, for instance.
Sure, I LOVE these advances as much as the next. They make my life a lot easier…but they’re certainly not essential. People functioned perfectly well 50 years ago and it bugs the freak out of me that people have become such pussies these days.
Consider that if you are not in a secure garage a sub-urban or rural driveway, your parking lot will be cased every night. Crooks see your shiney electronics suction-cupped to the windshield and figure correctly on an easy score. Of course this isn’t your fault, you only left valuables in your car, you didnt ask someone to steal them.
OP I’m sorry your car got broken into. It happens to nearly everyone at least once. Many people don’t bother locking their doors and just leave nothing in that people would steal. Depends on the neighbourhood and what kind of car you drive though.
Here’s a tip: a map-book is a great investment. My bf uses his all the time, he moved here from Alberta and had no sweet clue how to navigate the city. Now he knows it inside out. Plus it lists towns outside Halifax.
You make a good point there Walter & it brings to mind something no one else has mentioned…where is your car alarm ?
I’ve got one in my truck, & I haven’t been broken into since I installed it. That pretty blue light that blinks on every few seconds is all it takes for opportunistic thieves to stay the fuck away.
If your going to go electronic…you might as well go all the way.
Welcome to Nova Scotia. Never leave ANYTHING in your car….the crackheads still steal it.
On a good note, there are far less Asian drivers in NS than BC so you should find it far easier and less stressful to drive here.
I would say the NS drivers are worse than asians at driving.
NS’ers are worse at driving then any asian I’ve ever come into contact with… I’d say you guys are even worse than Quebec.
i don’t generally compare drivers based on their ethnicity, sex. a quick glance in their direction tells me what i need to know. death-grip hands, staring straight ahead, maybe starting to cry
LOL fat… you think my view of Nova Scotia is unique? Wake the fuck up, man! I didn’t write this. SO MANY people could have written this bitch and, you watch, many more will and it will have nothing to do with me. Open your eyes. Your town suxass.
And your son lixass.
