Your new policy manual boasts that you are a family run business, not a faceless corporation, but I’m starting to wonder. No Christmas bonus this year? Really? In years past we’ve gotten cards with a little cash or even a bottle of wine, but this year it’s just working a lot harder for more hours with no overtime. It isn’t about the money, even a rubber stamped card would have been nice. —Merry Christmas and a happy new job

It’s a bonus – not an entitlement. Perhaps your “family run business” had an extremely shitty year and is staring down the throat of an even worse one. That being said, a gesture of appreciation is always good management so ….who knows?
o.p., i have worked for people in the past such as this, but you really have to look behind the scenes. not all companies can even afford a card, let alone wine or xmas cash. while it is nice to have, it doesn’t seem feasible sometimes. i work for myself, so do i get a bonus, card, wine, or even a thank you, no i don’t. who is to blame there, me, the government, santa, or your invisible flying speghetti monster god thing. family run business has a major loophole in them, there are above average costs and other things involved. did they get a bonus, bet you they did not either.
should this be the Banking mentality… or The Government mentality … as I see it.
You know , You should GET BIG Bonuses or SOLID GOLD pensions (bonuses) for simply doing your job !
For which you are already paid ! ! ! ! !
Plus as someone else just bitched lately …the Gov, takes 40%+ of the damn bonus !
It just staggers my mind & as the banking/investment world has shown us, it isn’t sustainable ! Which we wil also IMO soon learn just how sustainable some Governments who’s spending is out of control are !
As for a rubber stamped card, what use is that ?
I fucking HATE (even my own family) who give out stupid fucking christmas, birthday, graduation, easter, baptism Cards !
Fuck off with the thrice god damned cards.
They are a waste of my time ,to read & discard
Your time to purhase & give
Plus they are a completely unnecessary carbon footprint that would actually be a positive if they were outlawed, simply because we would kill less trees !
Which is why I don’t even open them anymore & if I can, I don’t even pick them up , or conveniently ‘forget them’ when I leave your place .
I would like to repeat what Ivan said with an emphasis; it is a BONUS, not an entitlement. If you get it, it is a bonus! If you don’t get it, well, such is life (and life sucks sometimes).
When you stop thinking about what you could/should/would get and start being thankful for what you actually do get and already have, you’d be far happier in life. For example, stop thinking that “we always got a bonus and this year we didn’t” and start thinking “it is nice that we have a job where we actually get a bonus when the business is doing well”. Maybe that will even give you an incentive to help the business do well next year so your boss won’t have any choice but to reward you with a bonus!
Um, I’d love to have more hours over Christmas. More hours more monaaaay.
Besides the holidays either make or break most family owned businesses, if you didn’t get a bonus it might not be because the owner is a dick. It might just be because the store didn’t do well over the holidays… not that not giving employees a bonus makes you a dick, because it doesn’t.
Businesses that do financially well in a fiscal year can afford to give out bonuses, but those struggling post-recession may not have that luxury. The least your employer could do is explain why there was no card, no wine, nothing this year. I hope you didn’t get a gift for your boss there.
Shut up, sebastian. The least you can do is provide an educated post once in a while other than your redundant cigarette opinions.
i’d loooooove some extra hours over the holidays, but what do i get, two weeks mandatory unpaid vacation. goodbye savings, hello credit card debt
booohooo you didn’t get a bonus…shake your head, many people have no food or shelter over christmas and you have the gull to complain about a bonus…you should be ashamed of yourself!!!!!!!!!!!typical “me”generation, makes you want to gag!!!!
Tug1, that sucks kid. I’m not making light of your situation. Talk to your boss about a deferred salary, it’s what teachers do.
Good Mornin’ Hugo – and thanks, once again, for the killer avatar. It’s cold as an accountant’s heart here in the Dunder-Mifflin warehouse and a little laughter goes a long way.
