I stood on the corner of Spring Garden and Barrington yesterday for 20 minutes waiting for a bus. Do you know what I saw?

I saw a dozen dangerous crimes a minute: drivers “squeezing” the light or just plain ignoring it, drivers bullying pedestrians out of the crosswalk in a very lopsided game of “chicken,” drivers stomping on their accelerators and peeling out of a stalled lane into another that offers an irresistible ten feet of Open Road, only to shudder to a squealing stop half a second later.

Do you know the worst part? Enforcement is essentially nonexistent: when was the last time you saw, or heard of, a driver being ticketed for not yielding the right-of-way to a pedestrian? Or for reckless driving after forcing a cyclist off the road? It just doesn’t happen. —Slow the Hell Down

  1. Not posting here anymore, I think you guys are not worth my time. These bitches are stupid, and most comments are also, remember im watching kids. And when you least expect it, you are gonna realize I was a voice of reason in a sea of madness.

  2. Thank gawd, it’s a little uncomfortable seeing the things someone with a mental illness throws together. You’re damaged goods Jim, and a ticking time bomb.

In regards to the bitch, it makes me not miss my car at all!

  3. I just saw a police car pull over a car on Spring Garden Road for not yielding to a pedestrian (from the looks of it) – not five minutes ago.

  4. Boy, wasn’t he just a ray of fucking sunshine, eh? Jimmy boy, I hope you either 1. deal with whatever it is that has you so bitter and you come to find out that the world is not a complete ball of festering shit or, 2. Get some help, man. or, 3. all of the above. Someone please put me out of my misery if I ever get THAT bitter.

As for the bitch, it boggles my mind too, OB. One only has to wait at an intersection for mere seconds before all the bad driving habits are exhibited. (Especially this time of year). I am by no means a perfect driver and have made my fair share of mistakes while driving but to see the blatant disregard for the rules (and, in some cases, people’s lives), it absolutely floors me how these people even got a license to begin with. There are times I wish I was a cop so I could nail some of these douche’s hides to the wall. The big one for me is people yakking/texting on their cell phone while driving. It’s been proven that it affects your driving ability and judgement to the equivilent of DUI and personally I think it should be charged as such. The current fines are obviously not enough of a deterrent judging by the amount of numptyfucks I see doing it.
And I have noticed since moving here 10 years ago that most Halifax drivers treat a multi-lane street/road as an opportunity to race. It’s insane. I’ll be in a line of traffic travelling at or above the speed limit and the instant we reach a spot where the road splits into multi-lanes it’s like the fucking Indy 500. I could be doing 20-30km over the limit and they wouldn’t care. “I MUST get ahead of you. I HAVE to win.” It’s like most Halifax drivers are hardwired to act this way. Relax. You’re not going to lose your sponsorship if you don’t “win” and I’m sure where-ever the hell it is you’re going will still be there.

  5. Texting while driving saves time, little efficiencies like that could add up to big dollar savings at the end of the year.

  6. OB, this is exactly why I avoid Spring Garden whenever possible … and when I can’t avoid it, I cringe at the thought of it for precisely the reasons you noted, as well as one that you didn’t.

In my experience, many of the pedestrians have a nasty habit of crossing without looking. Cars aren’t able to stop on a dime folks and when you suddenly turn and decide to cross the street you’re placing yourself and others in danger. I’ve come close to hitting off one of these pedestrians and was nearly rear ended in the process. So, please pay attention … I’d like to keep my clean driving record.

  7. I’m with you, Vastie, but I’d go even farther. Say the HRM finds 20 to 50 excellent drivers with at least 15 years driving experience and perfect records. Give those people paint guns. Their job would be to ‘tag’ bad drivers with a blob of paint. To warn everybody else, see?

  8. I’ve seen the same idiot jay walk across that intersection twice this week. One of these day, I expect that he will clash with a driver just like OP describes. He’ll be traffic fatality #23423-23-2n

  9. Jim bo, don’t let the door knob hit ya where the good lord splitcha on the way out !
    OB….
I see vehicles letting pedestrians go all the time. One of the biggest problems with it, that I see is how often they stop when the pedestrian doesn’t have the right to walk…you know J walking, coming out between parked cars, running across a street no where near a corner !

It isn’t all the cars dude, because if it was, there’d be deaths every day !

  10. Women are the best drivers. Its the men that are the speed freaks, big engines under the hood compensating for small things below the belt. Men should pay double for car insurance the way they drive. They can’t cope, they can’t multi-task and they be crazy at christmas time!
