Fuck these commercials. Teachers pay nothing toward their medical and dental, yet their union dues go toward putting these filthy commercials on air. Doctors make a difference too, so do policemen, so do bus drivers, so do fast food cashiers when you need to temporarily cure your hangover. The difference is, these groups are secure about themselves. I know you are a gang of superheroes building a foundation for a better tomorrow through educating our children and never working during the summer or statutory holidays, but give me a fucking break with these commercials. Please. —Sweetboy55
This article appears in Feb 3-9, 2011.

Wait and get this they say they only get paid for 9 months work but paid over 12 months. How many of you out there are getting $40,000 for 9 months work? Shit most don’t get that for 12 monhs work. Then they wonder why people get pissed off at them.
Oh man, its been so long since we had a teacher bashing session.
yeah o.p., but without them, we’d all be dumb or dead. but in some cases, you just have to let nature take it’s course.
If a teacher had to work 12-month of the year they’d probably start smoking crayons and eating glue.
Well, a big FU to you OB. I happen to know several teachers and they work their fuckinig asses off, yes, 12 months of the year. During their summers, they’re preparing for the upcoming year. Some are taking classes to improve their own knowledge and skills to be better teachers. They frequently attend symposiums and conferences to have a better understanding of their work.
Pay nothing toward their medical and dental?!?! Are you fucking serious? They pay an obscene amount in union dues for these benefits.
If you’re so high and mighty and think teachers don’t earn what they’re paid, TRY IT. Try standing up in front of 25-45 potential hooligans and improve their minds.
Perhaps you should be listening to your teachers instead of judging them. You might fucking learn something asshole!!
SnipeHunter I have obviously hurt your feelings. As terrible as I feel for this, I also know a bunch of teachers. Based on your emotionally charged response I get the impression that on top of knowing a few teachers, you are a teacher, and your going to retort with some pathetic blubber, as you likely are one with a union mentality who just got into it for the benefits. I look forward to your response. Lets take a look at the facts:
http://www.ccrsb.ednet.ns.ca/sites/default…
Pretty fucking sweet deal for them. Not so much for the taxpayer.
If teachers were valuable and in high demand (like doctors), they wouldn’t need to have these commercials, and they wouldn’t need a union to protect themselves. They would be sought after and tempted by other provinces and countries with high compensation to move there (insert NS “quality of life vs making real money” argument here.) Keep in mind I am not bashing teachers at all. I know teachers are valuable as hell, education is the foundation for everything. I am bashing these particular commercials. They suck.
I notice you also say “you might fucking learn something asshole.” Please keep in mind as you read on that I know everything, I know significantly more than you, and that you have shown us in cyber space that you become very emotional over anonymous postings in cyber space. Having shown this very weak card, you will realize that I am significantly better and stronger than you in all aspects of life.
Two teachers I know gone back to get Masters Degrees in education. They both agree that nothing they learned during the degree improves their hands on teaching ability at all, it just increased their salary 20-70% and gives them the potential for a cushy six figure administrative job at the HRSB in the future.
I love kids, I would love to stand up in front of fifty hooligans and teach them a thing or two. Maybe I could “make a difference.” The problem is, our universities are churning out so many fucking teachers it takes fifteen years of subbing to get a permanent job, and at the rate we are producing teachers I know we sure as hell don’t need any more of them.
Anyway the bottom line is snipehunter, your the weak, and these commercials suck ding. If I didn’t have teachers I wouldn’t have gained the knowledge to type this message about how you suck more than this series of awful commercials. I appreciate teachers, but please, they don’t have it bad, and these commercials are terrible.
have you met the monsieur sweetboy^^
Thank you for the introduction, Paingirl.
While I am not familiar with the television commercials Sweetboy55 refers to, his post amounts to the usual rant about teachers in particular and, by extension, education in general. By way of response, I have only two questions to ask Sweetboy55: (1) Of what does the exercise of teaching consist? and (2) Of what does education itself consist? The first question cannot be answered without some conception of the first. A few pointers might help:
(1) Teaching does not consist simply of “telling.” Textbooks provide that. Similarly, teaching does not consist of “showing how.” Textbooks do that too. In its fullest sense, teaching consists on initiating the young (and the not so young) into distinct “modes of thought” ranging from that of historical interpretation to the world of science and jointly constitutive of what it means to be human. So if one is going to criticize teaching, it is always a good idea to have some conception of what the activity involves.
(2) One’s misconceptions of teaching flow naturally from one’s misconceptions of “education.” Sweetboy55 appears to be labouring under the prevalent misconception, that is that education involves some sort of preparation for the workforce. Hence his reference to “fast-food cashiers” and the like. But that is to confound education with “training.” Education, by contrast, has nothing directly to do with employment as such. On the contrary, it has everything to do with the process of acculturation, with an initiation into the modes of thought and awareness by virtue of which one becomes a reflective member of our of cultural community.
Well, there’s a couple of bones for Sweetboy55 to chew on. I would be interested in his reply.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
You’re a fox, paingirl.
I can think of two teachers that had a lifelong effect on me – dear Mr. McPherson high school English – he helped me through grade 12 after my dad died and inspired me to write – my grade 11 teach, Mr. Boyle who gave me a passion for history and all its lessons (those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it) – we were the only class to have posters of Peter Fonda, Bob Dylana and Moshe Dayan adorning our classroom walls.
First off, montrealman, kudos to you for not being familiar with these commercials. If you were familiar with these commercials, the “Teachers make a difference” series, that would mean mean that you were a lowlife like me who came home from work every day to watch Tom Murphy and the CBC News Nova Scotia at six, followed by Coronation Street, Followed by Wheel of Fortune, Followed by Jeoparady. A man with pathetic taste in television who got mildly upset about some gut wrenching commercials, and had nothing better to do but to vent about it anonoymously online.
By not falling into this category, monsieur, you have scored enormous points in my books. Keep up the good work.
As for chewing on bones from strangers, my mom told me not to do that. Especially seemingly francophone strangers on anonymous websites with virtual white mini vans. When I was in elementary school actually, I remember my teachers told me to stay away from strangers in white minivans. They made a difference. You lose a few points there.
Back to the teachers. And your two “questions”
(1) This has nothing to do with teaching. Its the fucking commercials. If you were a teacher, these commercials would make you ashamed to be part of this union and ashamed of your profession. There are a number of commercials, but this one pisses me off enough to waste my friday night blogging about it. Familiarize yourself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BWNVsBu_Bo…
(2) I am not labouring under the misconception education has anything to do directly with employment. Education is all about becoming cultured and well rounded. Fully with you there, especially for teachers. Judging from the small sample of teachers I am personally connected to who have furthered their education with a masters degree, They have generally informed me that what they took away from this higher education paid them a monetary reward that was incredibly generous compared to the value it added for their students as a result of their extra schooling.
All that is beside the point. I hate unions and I got carried away. Its the fucking commercials. I loathe the commercials. I am pissed off because the commercials fucking piss me off. I decided to throw a few useless unrelated comments about unions and vacation in there which was childish of me and for that I apologize. Noone should have to work in the summertime. And we should all be paid handsomely to not work in the summertime.
Im so fucking pissed with how dumb I was thinking teachers should work in the summertime I threw my laptop through the wall and then when I went out on my deck and when I saw it was still working I smashed it with a fucking baseball bat. Then I came over to my parents to use my daddy’s desktop and tell you all about it.
As you can see, Montrealman, sweetboy55 is a caring, compassionate, reflective member of the community who takes great pride in writing long winded sentences about nothing. As sweetboy55 is just getting his thecoast.ca bitching career off the ground and you, Montrealman, have an online entourage and a sexy lady named paingirl introducing you, I would hope that I can only better myself from following your blogging examples. I am sure that as I learn from you, my life, and the life of any thecoast.ca readers who take the time to read my bullshit, will only get better as time goes on.
The pleasure is all mine,
Sweetboy55
You are very passionate, sweetboy…just tap me a shave and a haircut on your car horn and I’ll be sure to get out of your way = )
I’ve had a few teachers that remained with me throughout my life. One teacher I became a caregiver for when his diabetes was too much and affected his kidneys. I was the one he wanted for me to look after him. Even though I was a little fuck in his class! Teachers with the right approach will have a lasting effect on a student.
hmmmm. do we have another personna of mm here. seems to lauding it on a bit thick in both ends don’t you all think.
but it might just be me, and i like the other personna better. not quite so condesending, as it were. but teachers do make a difference, in some small way to the unwashed masses of terrordom. they also make good targets for insane, lovesick, idolizing assholes that live in their mom’s basements for like 50 years.
but yes, commercials of just about any genre suck dog nuts. i especially hate the political attack ones. you have all seen them, and they are just about the sleeziest shit going. only a loser to be, would have the gaul to do that. if you are any good at all, people will vote for you, doing this shit, just turns people off to you.
but fuck, maybe that is the idea.
Teaching is hard work. Go try it for a day.
They deserve every dollar they make, as long as they do their jobs well.
The union however I just can’t stand. Jesus, I’d rather keep the union fees and represent myself. The nurses union also takes a chunk off each pay cheque to make sappy ads that no one listens to.
Unions employees should be replaced every year so they don’t have a chance to get comfy in their jobs.
paingirl,you’re in my head again.
55 – jumping in with both feet eh? You’ve met our dear Mademoiselle Annie Klienmen, keep up the good work 🙂
Annie, your point 1. Only partially correct, and in a only in a limited, non-empirical aspect. If showing and telling are not part of the learning/teaching process, how is an idea conveyed? Osmosis?
Your point 2. “prevalent misconception, that is that education involves some sort of preparation for the workforce” – too true, when speaking of you.
“Education, by contrast, has nothing directly to do with employment” WRONG. Education is not the all and end all for employment, but there is definately a correlation between the two, well, then again, except for you.
So…what does education have to do with adopting the cultural behaviour of another society? Less than getting a job I’d say.
Flutie Flake!
LOL~ at the newboy55
bMf: MM meets 55 (if you throw in a little perversion of the LS sort and a big MF truck)
MM is coming along, but he’s still a bit too…2 dimensional?…too rigid so he becomes tiresome at times.
And although sweetboy55 has the makings of the house psycho, he is more rounded–easier to read.
Now it appears we have LS in drag as Brenda, and interestingly, Brenda can write much better than LS.
I wonder though, if almost everyone here has at least two aliases, how many people actually participate at LTWWB?
Many thanks Sweetboy55 for your thoughtful, extended and forceful reply to my post which makes me think that you would make a very good teacher – and I know whereof I speak. Anyway, just a couple of points by way of a rejoinder, not however in any adversarial sense but rather in the spirit of co-operative clarification.
The first relates to my question about the nature of teaching – I wanted to distinguish teaching as the cultivation of critical intelligence from “instructing” – and the relevance of TV commercials and role of unions in the scheme of things. I watched the commercial and, yes, it was fatuous. However, thinking it over, just how would the activity of teaching be presented visually to third-party onlookers (i.e., the TV audience)? My point is that teaching is not a visual activity in the same way, for example, that cooking is. It is nine-parts mental. As for the unions, while they might protect the odd mediocre or even poor teacher, I have always felt that they protected the good teachers from authoritarian school administrators on the one hand and the bureaucrats in the Education Department on the other. In addition, teachers do need protection from unjustified pogroms of outraged parents – I know whereof I speak. So I think your negative view of unions is not quite as straightforward as you seem to suppose.
The second point relates to the question of education itself which I initially wanted to distinguish from training and the acquisition of specific occupational skills. Anyway, I was sorry to hear that the teachers you know felt that their efforts in acquiring a Master’s degree did not benefit their students. However, I think that there is never a direct, one-to-one correlation between a teacher’s further study and observable student improvement. Excluding such degrees as a Master in Educational Administration and the like (which have nothing to do with education in my sense of the concept), any benefit is of necessity indirect, usually in the form of greater teacher reflection on his practice, hopefully culminating in that pedagogical paragon, the “reflective practitioner.”
Well, I’ve gone on long enough for now. Once again, thanks for your extended and thoughtful reply. Don’t hesitate to throw the ball my way again if the spirit moves.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
Ok, I’m not reading all that crap. But I have nothing but respect for teachers. Sure there’s crappy teachers who don’t put in all the effort they should – but that’s the same in ANY industry. There are also wonderful, inspiring people who are being paid less than what they’re worth (in my opionion – they often make less than a minicipal councillor, for example).
Our teachers really need our respect and support. Most kids find themselves and have life altering experiences in the classroom – thanks to these people.
AND, just to finish – aren’t those commercials sponsored by the unions? You really should know, that unions often publicize like that for political reasons. It really doesn’t affect/touch/represent teachers as a whole. Teachers are unionized, and that’s a whole other kettle of fish. Unions vs. accurate representation of the folks that pay the dues.
If you want your kiddie winks to have a good education, go private!
2 teachers that I remember; Mr. Clarke had a medical problem that caused the ends of his fingers to be crooked and bent left and right, you never knew if he was pointing at you or someone 3 seats over.
Good Old George Robertson – he “supposedly” taught geograpphy, ex RN Officer – if we were working on an assignment he would have a copy of the Times up and be pretending to read it, but in reality he was reading “Parade” which was an early skin book.
kim sweetie, no, there is only one of me. and not in drag. my sexuality is secure in that i am male, 60, white, black hair and blue eyed.
i have no idea who brenda is, and the only people that i have met rosie, and our comrade ivan. who is in a league all by hisself, right man?
if you look at mm, and 55, the writing and syntax are so close, as to be eerie, if not one and the same. but i really could care less if anyone has 6 different alter egos. i made an observation, and will stick to it, unless i am proven wrong.
never won the millions last night, so i guess ltwwb is still stuck with my cranky old ass, and superior body. til we bitch again, tata. you too mm, and 55, you might be long lost twins, but i very much doubt that there is more than one mm, thank fuck for that.
Annie Klienmen & The High-voltage Electric Fence.
Ripped-off from – Tarol Hunt.
———————————————————–
LS – I guarantee you, that if we were to leave him alone with ths thing for two minutes, he’s be dead.
Kim – I think you give him too little credit. We shouldn’t think less of Annie due to his lower intelligence anymore than we should think less of me for my lack of upper body strenght. Intelligence is just another attribute.
And look. See? He’s seen the evidence presented to him concerning the danger, realized what he shouldn’t do and now he’s contemplating what he’s learned.
It may take him longer to reach the conclusions that you and I can come to with greater ease, but in his own way, he’s trying and that’s constructive.
LS – Mhmm…
Kim – See how he’s concentrating so intently on the fence? His mind might not be the quickest, but he’s committed to the task of understading the current situation. There are sophomores who have trouble reaching that level of concentration.
LS – Ah…
Kim – So I don’t think that we should be concerned with his ability to learn about his environment, because as long as his intellect is propelling him forward like it is now, that’s always positive.
LS – I see. (ponders a moment)….Hey! Annie, what are you thinking right now?
Annie – I’m totally gonna pee on this thing!!!
LS – smirk 🙂
Kim – (grumbling) Piss of Suckster ;p
We used to have a donkey/ass on the farm who wanted so badly for the horses to notice her that she would storm the electrical wire we used for a fence. The first time, the donkey’s shock received payed off, and for a short time, the donkey led the herd in a escape down the road. Unfortunately, all zaps received after that were not only stronger (we upped the voltage), but they were for naught–for although the horses found the initial run a bit of an adventure, they lost interest after that.
Of course, this is the same confused, little, female donkey that used to try to mount the mares.
Co-operative clarification is the key to any universal perspective, monsieur, and I am glad that you have clarified the fact that this is a constructive conversation and resisted the temptation to lash out at me for watching Coronation Street and making unnecessary comments about francophone citizens. Once again, I take my hat off to you.
Keeping in mind this is a bitch session the fact that I am fuckin pissed about these commercials may have clouded my objectivity in previous responses, although even god would agree I was more or less behind the eight ball with every word I have typed thus far.
Now a couple of you candy motherfuckers decided to tell heartbreaking stories about teachers who have touched you, teachers/relatives who have passed away, etc. etc.. These stories have touched me in a deep and profound way. Almost as deeply and profoundly as the following commercial, that appears to prove mathematically that teachers make a difference without using any numbers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7KUollEHYU
I know that these special teachers will be in your hearts forever and I want to apologize sincerely for the fact that very few of you on this thread have a clear understanding of the english language and have misconstrued this thing into sweetboy55 hating on teachers.
This is not the fact; the bitch is about the commercials, not the value of teachers. This being said, I fail to see how teachers were valuable to any of you during your upbringing as they have obviously influenced your comprehension of a brief paragraph of english writing to be no greater than that of a Neanderthal man suddenly brought to the present day attempting to read a Metro Transit bus schedule and travel back in time.
I am particularly disappointed with ralmn, who begins a particularly incoherent rant off with the sentence “Ok, I’m not reading all that crap.” Your teachers could have probably taught you an extra thing or two about starting a sentence off without immediately discrediting everything else you plan on saying. They could have made a difference. This is poor sentence structure and I do not want to hurt you, I want to help you. An understanding of the topic is generally an excellent thing to possess, ralmn. Although I am not a member of the teachers union, you may want to keep Sweetboy55’s words in mind as you venture on through this journey of life, ralmn. I promise you they will pay perpetual dividends in the form of you not looking like a complete and utter jackass to everyone you say anything to throughout the rest of your time on this planet.
Once again the pleasure is all mine. Sweetboy55 is the epitome of greatness, and all who attempt to take a bite out of him will feel each of their teeth instantaneously rot from their skulls as his candy ass is coated with so much sugar. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
– Sweetboy55
i like corrie st. too sweetboy
Sweetboy55 loves his corrie. A word to the wise: if you are on the ball with Coronation Street as it is displayed on CBC in Halifax NS NEVER, NEVER go on the website, as they are a few months ahead of us over in Europe and you will spoil a great storyline or two for yourself. I have ruined the story of the beloved Fishwick, and taken countless hours of suspense and entertainment away from myself over the next few months. Having been an avid fan of Coronation street for some years now I can’t believe I didn’t know this before but I unfortunately just realized last week and wanted to make sure you, paingirl, were also aware and did not committ Corricide as I have. Luckily, after realizing what was going on, I turned off the webpage immediately after reading about Fishwick and haven’t ruined any other “current” storylines on myself. The only thing I dislike about Coronation Street is when the commercials come on and I am reminded that teachers make a difference. Fuck those commercials. As you were.
– Sweetboy55
i have already committed corricide but will continue to watch. i don’t hold out much hope for this http://www.thenatter.co.uk/wp-content/uplo…
So….I guess I know where you two are on Sunday mornings 🙂
i don’t usually get home in time to watch through the week, but 7.30 on a sunday^^only if the dog wakes me up
Ah, the joys of satelite tv. Corrie is available from 6:30 to 10:30pm weeknights throughout the time zones. And I too, have committed corricide:S Even though Michael Le Vell warned Canadians NOT to do this on the Corrie special, it inadvertantly (and sometimes purposely) happens when perusing the UK dailies. FYI, in case you didn’t know, episodes can be caught up Sunday pm online, practically commercial free.
I’m still roaring about Kirk using Jason’s pic to ‘pull a bird’.
my dad’s a retired Ontario Teacher… he’s got one sweet ass pension let me tell you 🙂
Ontario Teachers Pension plan essentially owns the world. Not so much for Nova Scotia Teachers Pension plan. Underfunded is a charitable description of the situation. I envy your daddy, martym, he is the epitome of good times.
Coronation Street: Halifax Underclass Viewing?
Reflecting on the glowing comments about Coronation Street, set in Manchester, England, it occurred to me that the programme provides, by extension, a fruitful insight into the Halifax Underclass Mind, the object, as many know, of my continuing quest on this site. Admittedly, I have seen only one or two episodes but it was sufficient, given the acuity of my intellectual powers, to formulate my hypothesis. “Why,” I asked myself, “do some people in Halifax watch it? What is going on in their minds?” My emerging hypothesis is this: The Halifax Underclass is a reflection of the Manchester Underclass. In effect, the Halifax Underclass is holding up a mirror to itself. But what is in the mirror?
The opening scene of Coronation Street sets the tone. A dingy elevated rail car is seen crossing an nondescript overpass beneath which is the dreary streetscape of working-class Manchester. The depressing background music adds to the pervading sense of ennui and futility. The characters, for the most part bitchy women and sluggish men, make their appearance and proceed to engage in their little acrimonious feuds. All is inward-looking. The external world, in effect, may as well not exist. It is, of course, a beer culture but without the middle class enthusiasm for the varieties “real ale.” Of course, wine makes no appearance. Similarly, the bland interiors of the homes feature no books, to say nothing of bookcases. Indeed, the arts in their broader manifestations are unknown. The inhabitants exist in the moment and in the place. They are insulated cultural flat-liners.
In effect, the Halifax Underclass is but a part of a larger down-market demographic which extends across the lower reaches of most Western societies. But, of course, in true Underclass fashion, the Halifax Underclass is as indifferent to that of Manchester as that of Manchester is to that of Halifax. Each lives in its own hermetic solitude. Unlike Marx’s workers of the world, they will never unite. They just don’t give a damn.
Well, that’s my take on Coronation Street.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
For some time, I’ve had the feeling that I know MM in real life. Of course, if the person I’m thinking of is not one and the same, that means there are more…lurking…preparing…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCfWHqrYUqo…
Now, I’m afraid to get out of the water.
Not to worry, MM. We tune in to watch your show too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uquSW3NEuio
did you enjoy the program monsieur?
I vote the Corrie character that most resembles our dear monsieur-de-mensa is Norris Cole…hehehe!
Morning painie, morning Kim, morning annie.
Wow,the descriptin of England is bang on Annie.
I remember my first visit to Europe, and how dissapponted I was with (especially England) the “seat of modern civilization”. By first appearances it’s a dreary and wretched place.
Then I looked past what I was seeing, and saw more, much more. There is a rich underlying culture present that isn’t apparent at first glance. I’m fortunate that I was able to see past the end of my nose, and experience what I have. I guess this was part of my “education” wasn’t it, and nowhere near a classroom.
So, given the acuity of your intellectual powers, you’ve offered a “tentative statement that proposes a possible explanation” Meh….OK, whatever.
My advice to you Annie, is to stop focusing on the superficial.
Look past the surface/façade and you’ll find something more substantial. It’s there, honest, you just need to konw how to look.
Kim – Annie can’t possibly be Hyacinth because Hyacinth is my mother-in-law.
http://27.media.tumblr.com/twcfF42UAq9ojt2…
Although it would tend to explain much >: (
Morning Painey & Hugo. More voltage on the electric fence please .
Morning Ivan, moning Oc. I googled Norris Cole. You think annie might be that good looking? 😉
i was thinking roy cropper
I hope you guys are down loading all the current episodes and not waiting for them on CBC.
G’day, all = )
Mother-in-law, Ivan? That would make you Tarquin, Hyacinth’s son’s gay lover. = p
…I’ve never understood why people resent teachers so much for getting summers and holidays off and for getting paid for the whole year. It’s a salary job, for fuck sakes. And it’s not their fault that the academic year is only 10 months. What the fuck do you expect them to do during the summer? Pick up a part-time job? Excuse them for consciously making the choice to try and teach peoples’ dumbass children… it’s not exactly like it’s a quality-paying job.
LOLZ Kim. Not that there’s anything wrong with that >; )
It just means I’ll be *pulling* for the *packers* today.
(Heh, Heh. Dude said…, well, you get the picture.)
we have a wiener^^ we watch l’hockey and “i hate illinois nazis”
groan and groan
= )
I’m watching Battlefield Earth. There isn’t a dry seat in the house.
it was on last night, i tried watching it a few times…it reminded me of plan 9 “oh, were not supposed to laugh” but not as funny, more cringeworthy
When “Cave men flying perfectly preserved, armed & fueled, 1000 year old Harriers” is the least ridiculous thing about a film, you know you’ve got a winner. I believe Jon Stewart described it as a cross between Star Wars and the smell of ass.
And now I have this strange urge to go get my engrams audited…?
Over 50% of beginning teachers quit within 5 years – there is a reason for that.
My largest class was 12 students, class was 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks of the year. All my students were high school & university grads. My income was $75K. I do not consider myself overpaid for the services I provided. So, imho, $40K/yr for baby-sitting your frikin little gansta asshole darlings, is nowhere enough.
You get what you pay for, if you pay shit, you get shit.
lolz – battle field earth (what a poor joke), the book was written for juveniles, the movie should have been a cgi or cartoon series. You can’t take a 700 page book and make it into a 2hr movie. Just like those other bombs “Clan of the Cave Bear” and “Dune”, except those books were pretty damm good.
Books; on another thread.
Heinlein, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, a classic, but I stoped reading him when he got started on the kick of going back in time and fuckng his mother. Spider got fucking weird too.
Try Larry Niven, Ringworld series, another classic.
Then there is: the the one and only, the Godfather of all SF – Jules Verne.
He predicted, nuclear power, submarines, and space travel.
Oh Yeah – Despite the general crapitude of a lot of Disney’s live action flicks, this was a thing of beauty:
http://www.julesverne.ca/images/imgjvmodel…
And James Mason was vicious good as Captain Nemo:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BdFGC-zy2qY/TBBV…
Book and movie are treasured memories of my childhood.
No, definitely Norris Cole over Roy Cropper. Roy is far too humble to be our Bon’omme-de-la-Bitch.
Chapped Thighs
On re-thinking my thoughts on Coronation Street – I’m always re-thinking my thoughts, the curse of the intellectual – I discovered I had ommitted to mention “Rover’s Return,” that dreary pub to which the denizens of the street regularly return and in which they might be observed collectively “in situ.” I maintain that the general theme I previously established for Coronation Street – that of melancholia, ennui, and futility – naturally carries over into the social intercourse of the Manchester Underclass as found in Rover’s Return. How is this so?
Seated in their soiled banquettes, the Manchester matrons with their chapped thighs smile thinly at the room over their bitter gin and It’s. The extra subcutaneous fat on their legs, required for warmth in the cold, damp Manchester winters, results in their constant chafing. The men, on the other hand, glad to get away from the matrons when any opportunity arises, gather at the bar to bark empty platitudes at each other. They have intuitively grasped the truth of Sartre’s mordant observation, particularly in the confines of Rover’s Return, that “Hell is other people.”
The question, of course, is whether there is any equivalent to Rover’s Return in Halifax. Does the Sea Horse admit women?
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
Seems that Annie has watched more that 2 shows 🙂
Ok, I knew that a banquette was part of a fortification, but you made me google it annie. I picked up something new today, cool. What the fuck is “bitter gin and it’s” though?
Chapped thighs? I can think of several “fun” cures 😉
Fuck, you’re such a dull, unimaginative, boor, maybe it’s all the extra subcutaneous fat on your brain.
“Does the Sea Horse admit women?” Yes, a long time ago, so I guess it’s not your type of place, eh?
Since you’re not into women, in “that way”, there are a few places that you might want to check out in Montreal there Annie (odds are that you already have life memberships), Campus (for the inellectual in you), Sky Complex (has a spa), Cabaret Mado (you’ll meet the *ahem* ‘girl’ of your dreams), & Tunnel (make sure to wear your manties).
IF ANYONE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN LOOKING AT THE POSTS FROM THIS PAIR, YOU WILL NOTICE BOTH SPEAKING IN THE THIRD PARTY SOMETIMES. it started off as just a post, but then 55 started called himself that thru his comment, and of course mm, has done this all along.
but one or other or both, someone has finally lost it, by creating another bitcher and talking back and for to themself. and lauding on the platitudes as well. disgusting and sickening to say the least.
yes, mm/annie/55 has finally went and lost the marbles the rolled around in his gigantic empty head for so long. i hope we all feel good about ourselves, for finally driving him/it/whatever, over the edge. i sure as fuck do. NEXT.
I have never posted on here, but this bitch is close to home. I understand that there are bad teachers out there. I’ve had a few! But my mom was a teacher and my dad a pricipal and they worked so hard! They did have summers off but in reality my dad was back at school by mid July to start getting ready for the new school year and same with my mom. I love reading these bitches. They are funny, but I don’t like how so many people here lump everyone together. All teachers are bad, all welfare people are lazy, all smokers are evil. Etc.. Let’s remember that everyone deserves the right to bitch but also deserves respect. Thanks for making my work days more interesting! Cheers.
Oops. I also just noticed that I spelt principal wrong. Great! That really shows how much my parents taught me 🙂
50% of the time, you’ll spell it right every time.
Hello Halifax Girl!
It’s pleasure to meet someone on this site who retains a full measure of manners. (Remember the motto over the gateway to the gardens at New College, Oxford, founded in 1381: “Manners mayketh man.”) She properly points out, “Let’s remember that everyone deserves the right to bitch but also deserves respect.” Well said, Halifax Girl!
Perhaps you might pass along this advice to Hugo Phurst who engages in his usual vulgarisms where Montrealman in particular is concerned and with whom I no longer have any direct correspondence. You might also tell him that “gin & Its” refers to gin and Italian vermouth, the preferred drink for those matrons with their chapped thighs at the Rover’s Return. For one who professes to know the English “beyond superficial appearances,” this was a serious lapse. Also please tell him that “subcutaneous” refers to “beneath the skin” so his reference to my “cranial subcutaneous fat” is incoherent. And, finally, tell him I’ve seen only one or two episodes of Coronation Street but, believe me, it was enough.
Perhaps one of your parents can help Life Sucks with his grammar. Words, whether spoken or written, reflect the quality of the mind of which they are the articulation and so the piteable quality of Suck’s mind stands forth for all to see. Also, please tell Sucks that “55” and Montrealman are separate entities. Perhaps his grammatical implosion is the consequence of his profound conceptual confusion. I think he’s beginnig gnaw at his own entrails.
One last point: Perhaps my refernce to the Seahorse Tavern was too up-market for the Halifax Underclass. Would the Lighthouse Tavern down on Barrington St. be a better counterpart for Rover’s Return? I think it would capture the squalid atmosphere required for the Halifax Underclass to thrive.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!

LOL @z3
mayketh?
My play on words was deliberate you dolt. Stop drifting in & out of the third person, you’re doing it wrong, & it makes you look more than just a little simple.
Asking Halifaxgirl to intervene on your behalf, hahahahhaha…you’re such a git.
Somehow, I doubt that you ever attended Oxford, so…”Let no man ignorant of geometry enter” – Sign over Plato’s Academy in Athens

Hello Again Halifaxgirl!
I should have warned you about Hugo Phurst who, as I have explained before, is a psychotic. He is totally obsessed with me and I’ll tell you why: I have a Ph.D. and he doesn’t. It’s as simple as that. Given Phurst’s opinion of himself such a situation is, quite simply, unacceptable.
Do you see the picture on Phurst’s post? It’s one of my first generation of whippets. Their names were Alice and Daisy. Phurst has gone onto another site on which I had posted their pictures but which I no longer keep up. Such is his obsession with me that he has already wormed his way into my Chronicle-Herald site which, I suppose in an attempt to embarrass me, he has posted on this site. But, as usual, he has failed. Unlike Phurst, I don’t need a pseudonym.
Yes, “mayketh” is Old English in respect to which, of course, Phurst is totally ignorant. And yes, I have given several papers at New College, Oxford which, as we well know, Phurst never will.
I must say I enjoyed ZZZ’s comment. Wasn’t it marvelous? And, of course, ralmn’s “LOL” was uproarious. Didn’t you think?
Well, Halifaxgirl, sorry to burden you with all this trivia. Give my best to your parents.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
“Given several papers at New College, Oxford” Uh Huh – and they all read “WILL BE PEDANTIC FOR FOOD.”
Well at least z3’s last post made more sense than all of MM’s posts from all threads.
Hahahahaha, told you that you’d be back bitch 🙂
So (I’m paraphrasing here) annie is back, offering her pedestrian pop psychology, and, incredibly, the assertion that intelligence is to be equated with a knowledge of “Old English”.
The true definition of a snob is one who craves for what separates men rather than for what unites them. – John Buchan
The true snob never rests; there is always a higher goal to attain, and there are, by the same token, always more and more people to look down upon. – Russell Lynes
Again, montrealman, you’re a game, and a running joke. It took me as long to find these 2 quotes as it did to find the dogs 😉
The Whackjob
What did I tell you? The whackjob is back and he’s going to be right back up when he reads this. Any bets?
Could someone please suggest a mental clinic in Halifax? There must be one somewhere in Spryfield. He needs help.
Thanks.
Well now… I see my little bitch is back for more.
Can’t go a day without me?
You know annie, it’s not that I’m trying to prove that I’m smarter than you (as you’ve often alluded), it’s that I’m trying to get you to prove that you are as smart as you say. As far as the general intelligence of LTWWB goes, I’d say that you’re, “average” (being generous there).
Please, don’t try to use your “education” as an example of your intelligence, because as we all know, there is no direct correlation between education and intelligence.
So, how can annie demonstrate her super-brains? Not math, that’s for sure.
How about a cognitive, problem solving test, that requires being able to envision a result? Lolz, what am I saying!!!??? Annie can’t handle a word puzzle ffs. Back to square-one Sméagol, how do you propose we authenticate this so called “superior intellect” of yours?
Okay so you think teachers make a shit load of money? You think teachers get paid for doing nothing over the summer and holiday breaks? You couldn’t be more wrong. Teachers make a yearly salary divided over 12 months, instead of the 10 months they are physically in the classroom. But don’t be fooled. A good, no GREAT teacher will work their ass off over the summer, holiday breaks, and on weekends. They will also spend their own money to ensure that their students get the best. Most schools have very little in the way of a classroom budget. So all those cool activities that supplement the boring crap that is written in text books, is provided by the teacher. Out of their own pocket. As for dental and medical, most of the teacher pay for that. There are a lot of teachers out there who are not secure in their job, who get bounced around every year, or who do not find their contract renewed. Not much different than other professionals out there. You have obviously not had the pleasure of being in a classroom with a great teacher. Things have changed in the past 10 years or so. In order for a teacher to do a great job, they must put out their own money. They must work over the holidays, and they must work on the weekends. Let me see you go home from work, mark papers, essays, exams, or even plan for the next week and then tend to their own family. Do you have to do that in your job? Let me see you be more than one person to a kid every day. Your original comment is bull. Try doing a teachers job for a week, and see where you end up. Back in your job, because you can’t handle it.
What yousaidwhat said.
My last girlfriend (the one that lasted 4months), works in the education system. One term the can be used to describe her is “dedicated”, she worked on her weekends, summer hollidays, and on her “personal” administrative time.
Does anybody else do that? Fuck I’ll tell you, I doubt that too many of the people who have been dumping on the teachers, would work overtime & on the weekends, for no extra pay.
Maybe if parents took some responsibility for the behaviour & education, of their “little darlings” (venomous sarcasm), what the schools output, would be of a higher quatily.
Hello once again from Montreal!
Just a couple comments on the last two posts.
1. The Whackjob is back with his usual “reasoning.” He claims that, “As we all know, there is no direct correlation between education and intelligence.” While the assertion understandably reflects a very common theme on this site (and particularly in the case of the Whackjob himself) “we,” of course, “know” no such thing. Indeed, the contrary is the more intuitively plausible. So, unfortunately for the Whackjob, he must demonstrate and not simply assert his claim. But this will never happen for two reasons: (a) Even if it were true, the Whackjob lacks the intelligence to demonstrate it, and (b) In any case, the assertion is false.
2. “Yousaidwhat” rightly praises the “great teacher” but for the wrong reasons. Assuming he is talking about high school “teaching” and not elementary school “instructing,” it is not a matter of the “great teacher” putting out his/her own money or working over the holidays and weekends. It is a matter of cultivating a critical intelligence in his/her students. In the proper sense of “teaching,” then, the “great teacher” inspires those qualities of rational, critical reflection, a quality which he/she must necessarily manifest
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
Actually annie, elementry school would be the place for your type of, “teaching”.
“In its fullest sense, teaching consists on initiating the young (and the not so young) into distinct “modes of thought” ranging from that of historical interpretation to the world of science and jointly constitutive of what it means to be human. “
Where better than kindergarten, to teach that?
To be a great teacher, you have to care. Being selfless & purchasing class supplies (as yousaidwhat mentioneed), is indicative of such. An ‘instructor’ who lacks empathy for their students cannot, ever, be considered a great teacher.

A couple points:
“Instructing” refers to the inculcation of basic skills or the transmission of facts. It occurs pre-eminently at the elmentary level. At the secondary level, the aim of “teaching” is to cultivate reflection on those facts, to seek not just the “what” or the “how” but the “why.” (At the university level it is a matter of “lecturing.” Ideally the students apply the habits of crtical reflection acquired at the secondary level in the library. At the post-graduate level, the pedagogical form returns to the secondary model, but with greater depth.)
Caring is, of course, a necessary condition of the “great teacher” but it not a sufficient one. The “great teacher” must also engage the mind of the student in an inspirational fashion.
Historical interpretation in kindergarten? They sound to me like they’re on the fast track.
Cheerio!
I just want to say that teachers are great. Some of them, not all of them. Some of us that spent 13 years in free school followed my ridiculous amounts of expensive school (which makes us “rating-teachers-experts” I would say… Can probably name on one hand how many really great teachers we’ve had… One hand. I can think of two great teachers. out of 15+ years of teachers. That is probably 45+ teachers I have experienced…
But there are indeed a lot of stupid jobs that make too much, and amazing tough jobs, that don’t get paid enough. I won’t list which ones are which though because I am aware they’re my personal opinions.
I myself, can’t wrap my mind around the crap we as a society spend our money on though. Just me. I just find this a hard subjet to dissect. Because it isn’t black and white.
I just wanted to add about all the text book comments. the books indeed say everything that we learn from teachers and “how to’s”… But if I was given all the text books to learn all of the information just from primary-grade 12, not even getting into university information… I would have gotten no where. I wouldn’t have read it. Or learned anything. Everyone learns differently, I am sure some people might have learned more from books than teachers.. I myself would have failed.
