The teachers long service award is too generous. They should have something in the contract that it is the number of years of service multiplied by some dollar figure just like a travel allowance or a meal allowance. They should be getting a silver handshake not a gold one.
Just discontinue the old system which is based on income and instead replace it with some reasonable dollar figure. —LetsBeReasonable

Do you think that’s reasonable? That is, to strip away a benefit previously negotiated and agreed upon? If your employer was to reduce your vacation time, is that reasonable?
I’m not taking sides but these are ridiculous comments from the peanut gallery.
I tell ya, if anyone of ya had to deal with the kids they have to (P-12 incl.,), you’d want a golden ticket out too. not silver.
It’s the very least we all can do in support of their lifelong impact on our future.
Nice way to minimize a problem. If it were that easy, we wouldn’t be in this situation.
“Just discontinue the old system….” geez
MethinksYHZ “Do you think that’s reasonable? That is, to strip away a benefit previously negotiated and agreed upon? If your employer was to reduce your vacation time, is that reasonable?”
I have to respectfully disagree with you. When a benefit is absurd, it is totally reasonable to revisit it in a new round of collective agreement talks.
It only takes 1 side to consider something absurd, then it become a collective agreement issue that needs to be resolved.
This has nothing to do with the children, money, working conditions, etc…this has solely to do with the teachers flexing the muscles of their very powerful union. It doesn’t matter what the government puts before them for a deal, it’s completely irrelevant and the teachers will vote it down and leave the table anyway. This has to do with the failure of all the other unions to “win” their negotiations with us (the taxpayer), and they aren’t going to budge, because nobody fucks with the teachers or their union. This game is pathetic, and so are the people that support both sides of this farcical argument. If you aren’t angry with how both sides are using your children as fodder in their game of political chicken, you are just another dumbass with their head buried deep in your own ass!!
I’m with you, Furious. Between the teachers’ union & the nurses’ union, Nova Scotians will be asked to bend over until our taxpayers’ butts are raw. And they want a long service award long after the feds & province got rid of theirs? Tell ’em to go find Marty McFly & blast back to 1985.
GV, read the bitch again; then read my comment. If it doesn’t make sense the second time, I can’t help you.
Yes! On top of that they want us to pay (in full) for every sick day they have left leading up to retirement, plus their healthy pension amount (42k a year). I knew some teachers that had over a year of accumulated sick days. And then they want the Service award ($35k) on top of that! So, in their first year of retirement, at a minimum, they would make over $77, 000. If you don’t think that needs to be re-thought you’re an idiot who thinks this province is made of money.
….Right after we remove McNiel’s LIFE LONG GOLDEN PENSION AFTER SERVING ONLY 2 YEARS!……which he himself voted for.
Cons are fucking dumb as nails without logic,Liberals are just fucking plain greasy,NDP are construction corruption who added to HST so i guess I WILL BE VOTING GREEN!!! Fuck it!
