Want people to move to Nova Scotia? Lower property tax, sales tax, land transfer tax, income tax (Provincial Portion) and all the other taxes. This province, and Halifax, is taxing people to death. Stop asking why so many of your sons and daughters are moving to Alberta, the high rate of tax makes it impossible for them to get ahead. Alberta doesn’t tax people until they have to move to get away from high taxes. —Frank

  1. And how! But the problem with us being taxed up the ass is because a lot of people move away to make more money and when they retire they “move back home” because the cost of living is cheaper (apparently).

Too many retirees to working people compounded by companies not locating here due to high taxes/energy rates…..

  2. it’s not just the taxes… it’s everything.
prices on everything go up… then gas goes up… then the prices go up to account for the fuel for transport… then gas goes down and everything stays the same bloody price.. except for coal… and so power goes up… then gas goes up again and everything gets more expensive…

I’m SO getting the hell outta this shit-hole…
someone pitch turning NS into Canada’s Rikers….he’s all juiced up on wanting more jails.
send all inmates in Canada to live here where the weather sucks and no-one really wants to be.

  3. I wish they would knock down the taxes. I’m currently looking at real estate and i just want get to get a decent 2 bedroom condo that isn’t a dive and is on par to what im currently renting is impossible for under 320 thousand. Who can afford to live in this damn city anymore?

  4. I’m OK with the taxes— it’s the cost of goods I found too damn high. Grocery prices are at least 30% and beer, wine and liquor are 150% more than what I am paying now. Maybe the gas was higher, too, but I never could figure out price per litre v gallon, so I just ignored it. ;->

  5. “because the cost of living is cheaper (apparently).”

No way anyone has ever moved to Nova Scotia for that reason. People come back for friends, family, and the beauty of Nova Scotia. Out here in Alberta everything is cheaper for the most part except if you want to buy a new house in Calgary. Milk, eggs, cheese, bread, gas, liquor, wine for the most part is cheaper, and of course the 5% sales tax adds up to make a difference.

  6. don’t hold your breath on that one, Biscuit. I heard on the radio that over 65% of Alberta’s workforce has some form of post secondary education. If you take away the jobs that require education, and you take away the oil field jobs(most are looking for experience)……all you have left is the McJobs and Wally greeters.

  7. I’d use them to carry nitroglycerine and clean the tires of them big dinosaur-size dump trucks. Or ask them to volunteer.

Ya, lots of Nova Scotians have bachelor of arts or degrees that aren’t used in their jobs, so that in itself doesn’t really mean much. Fort Mac isn’t the only place in Alberta with lots of jobs. Plenty of construction and trades related jobs available throughout the province. And to be an apprentice in many trades you don’t need to already have done schooling for it beforehand, as that can come later. You should probably come out here before relying on your Scotian pessimism.

  9. time to wake up from you dream o.p., taxes are the only other thing, besides death,, that we have to look forward to.

  10. Taxes here are like getting rammed up the ass without lubrication. So I’ve heard.

  11. “I’d consider self-immolation before moving to Alberta.”

We probably don’t want you here anyways…

  12. probably not..
cause I’d burn the whole fucking province to a pile of ash carcasses and rubble.
    Smarmy, elitist fuck.
I’d be sure to do it when the pens are playing the flames and the habs are playing the oilers on the same night too…

Unlike your happy-go-lucky, life is full of rainbows and butterflies…
Some men… just want to watch the world burn
