Why the fuck are we spending millions of dollars trying to go to the moon while there are a million problems here on earth? Why don’t you take care of everything wrong with this planet before venturing off into outer space? You’re all a bunch of idiots. I cannot believe morons like you are the ones in charge of the future. Enough is enough. Give your head a shake and spend your time and money on more important things that deserve the attention. —Praying for a Better Tomorrow

Maybe there’s things to be learned about space that may help solve problems on earth. I don’t know, and I have a feeling you don’t know enough on the subject either.
Fuck you, you stupid ignorant dipshit.
7 out of 7 Mercury astronauts agree with Orgasmatron

The deeper into space they go, the farther from people like you they get.
I agree with you OP. They have been pumping money for years into the space programs and it is time to do some cut backs until better times. Space isn’t going to teach countries how to get out of the trillions of dollars in debt they are. It isn’t going to feed the poor. I agree with you OP it doesn’t make sense.
Once this world is f’d beyond repair, which isn’t really all that far off, we are going to need a new world to destroy. I won’t make it there, but our children will.
It says much about our strengths as a species that we were able to go to the moon. It says even more about our failings that we stopped, once the TV audience grew bored.
Are you talking about Newt? The truth is, now that he knows how sick the planet is, he is going after a younger, healthier planet.
The moon??….Ohhhh..you mean the sound stage in Hollywood. Right. Well, to be fair, it hasn’t been used since the late sixties/early seventies so it’s going to require some major upgrades and renos to bring it up to code. Not to mention the property values in that part of Hollywood are pretty high, so, I’d say a few million dollars is a pretty reasonable deal. Unless of course you’re planning on using the building for some other purpose, then you have to apply to the city for re-zoning and THAT can get expensive.
From the invention of the Airplane to landing on the Moon was only about 65 years. Its now been 40 years since we’ve been back to the Moon. That’s some serious slacking.
There’s not that much there, really (the moon, that is). I’m more pumped about the missions farther afield….but then I’m a space opera fan….☄
I was 9 when The Eagle landed on the moon. Of the 12 who walked on it’s surface, 9 are still alive. I will probably see a day when none of them are left. Sad.
But if it weren’t for space travel, we wouldn’t have Tang!
I’m in full agreement, OP. Except for the praying thing.
Ivan, I was nine, too!
Just 2 weeks before the moon mission, I was in Hyde Park, where the Rolling Stones gave a free concert (Brian Jones had just died)…The two events are forever linked in my mind. Every time I see that grainy black and white image, I hear jumpin jack flash…
Very cool, Xeenie. I have collected the books of every Apollo, Gemini and Mercury astronaut who ever wrote one.
And, in keeping with the situation, probably the best 90’s video to deal with space travel…

Hmmmm, Tang!
Sorry, that should read “Mmmmm”
Let’s see….smoke detectors, quartz clocks, patient monitoring systems, fire retardant materials, insulation, light weight safety gear, cordless power tools, heart pumps, and frigging satellite everything. All this, and much more have been developed because of the work the space industry has done.
they wanna go there, to fuck that up too. just like they want to go to mars.humans aren’t happy, unless they are destroying something, anything sometimes. but have no fear o.p., may 24 is coming, and ost humans will be gone. only the select few will remain. are you one, i am?
There’s a restaurant in my town, the Apollo Grill, that uses those Apollo glasses that came free with laundry detergent or jelly or something. Takes me back to see them…
My dad (Ryerson U!) attended many of the Apollo launches-his company made the capacitors that were in the rockets…
…as an aside, I’ve never felt comfortable lumped in with the baby boomers. As my age mate, what say you?
A shade too late to be a boomer; a hair too early for Gen X. Thought disco was gay; too well adjusted middle-class to truly be a punk. The sexual revolution was entering it’s Great Terror period. Aside from young, gifted and snotty – I kind of defy easy categorization, I guess.
I know exactly what you mean, General!
Just a little sliver of ma-ma-ma-my generation. Didn’t practice hiding under desks (like my 3 yr older brother did.) Didn’t get to take sewing/cooking AND wood/metal shop (like my 3 yr younger brother). Plus (in the states) Title IX was passed when I was in school, so we suddenly had co ed gym classes and our own sports teams…
**Aside from young, gifted and snotty – I kind of defy easy categorization, I guess.**
lol, Ivan. “more clever than wise” might have been mine. Undiagnosed adhd (just called it hyper back then) I was bright enough to get by without doing any work whatsoever. Blew through 3 colleges in 2 years…good times, good times…☺
I’ll take clever over wise any day of the week. A lot more fun.
“earth people are idiots” 🙂
Avast, please tell me you don’t believe that sound stage crap. You know if NASA tried to fake it, the Soviets would have exposed it in seconds flat instead of congratulating them. Remember, there were spies abound and those pesky media types were all over it. If they couldn’t keep Watergate quiet, they sure as hell couldn’t keep fake Apollo/moon landings fake.
Of course you could always ask Buzz Aldrin.

Buzz earned his place in Valhalla with that one.
Hugo, most of those inventions would be here regardless. technology is hard to suppress.

Xeno, that was “Ryerson Polytechnic” at that time. I mean, really.

Hmm, did you have a difficult time in rehab?
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
OB…those that can, DO.
Those that can’t , pray.
After all if you can’t do fuck all, you might as well waste your time pretending you’re doing something ! ! !
Bro Tim, of course I don’t believe the whole Hollywood sound stage bologny. I was just having a little fun. I can’t believe that there are still people out there that dispute this and think it was some sort of gov’t hoax. Even more unbelievable are the whack jobs (fear mongers) who have their heads shoved so far up their arses that they somehow think that 9/11 was some sort of conspiracy perpetrated by the U.S. Gov’t and even those poor souls who jumped to their death were really just movie stunt dummies rigged to fall at the right time and filled with stage blood, or that the footage of them jumping was all doctored, etc. ANYTHING to make it look like a gov’t conspiracy. I couldn’t’ go through life being that paranoid. Boggles my mind.
I am on the fence on this one. I do believe in scientific exploration of solar system. What we’re finding out about Mars, a planned trip to Europa, the landing on a very Earth-like (at least in landscape, it’s -550 degrees F and has rivers and lakes of ethane) Saturnian moon Titan is astonishing. Discovery is part of what makes us human.
So, I guess, if it’s for discovery, thumbs up, for development, thumbs down. We have enough grief from development here on Earth.
Well there are many entities that hope that the human race starts or continues to believe everything they see and hear. I do hope that people do question something’s in life. It would be a very easy society to take over if nothing is ever questioned. Just ask the Jews from the holocaust.
I don’t think we should be paranoid but I do thing we should be aware that we have a lot of our rights being taken from us all the time. There is a difference between aware and paranoid.
Avast, the scary part is that the kids today (born after the missions) don’t think the technology of the day could do it. Worse, some think “Apollo 18” is a documentary.
As for those going on about the plight of the poor and the money should go there, look at the billions wasted over the years where dictators and tyrants got the money and the only way to stop it continuing is going to war against those tyrants and dicatators, but the West has no stomach for that.
Are you making your own avatars Hugo? If you are, they are good:)
The space program of the 60s provided many benefits from the internet to remote controls to VCRs and plastics. Besides its inspirational and uplifting and allows us to celebrate something that all people of every nation can be proud of. It only costs .5% of GDP even in the Apollo years, so its not a huge expense. I think we should go back to the moon and go to Mars?
I actually agree with Lisababe for once. Someone please shoot me now.
The grandeur of space exploration has that effect on people, B-man. The world is a better place with you among the living >; )
P-N-B, yes I am, and thank you very much 🙂
GV, while some of the spin-off technology from the space programme might have been developed by another source, it wouldn’t have been until years later.
Seriously, who, if not NASA and the other space agencies, would have put up the billions and billions of dollars to build our global satellite networks? Virgin Galactic or McDonald’s maybe?
