Start with the minor offenses (like people smoking where they shouldn’t, parking where they shouldn’t, driving through crosswalks when they shouldn’t and the list goes on). Take a damn digital camera with you for evidence if needed. They’re really cheap these days, for fuck sakes! I have been swarmed, several of my friends have been, and yet these goat-fucking punks are able to keep getting away with it. I want to rescind my comments regarding the HRP, folks (and, no, no one has contacted me with a complaint or threat). My comments were formed out of anger and frustration as I am certain a lot of comments here are. I am fed up with the damn law in Canada and their handling of children (and that’s what these swarmers are… children – due to their immaturity) by giving them a lollipop and sending them home after they commit a crime. I am publicly apologizing here online to the HRP. I am sure they are working on this as best they can. It’s just not fast enough for most people. It’s too bad the police can’t put silencers on their weapons and shoot the fuckers when nobody’s looking.
No problem Mr Mac. Most of the vociferous comments made here on this issue stem more from anger, frustration and ,ultimately, helplessness than from internet tough-guy posturing. If the police are not pursuing this matter more vigorously, it may be because someone in the bureaucracy is more afraid of the inevitable negative press, than of HRM citizens being injured and victimized. We have a pretty good city, with all it’s flaws and inanities. The notion of having to surrender our right to enjoy it because a segment of the populace have made a conscious decision to behave in the most unconscionable manner possible is not one that comes easily, and nor should it.

What can one legally carry for protection? I understand pepper spray is illegal in Canada but I guess bear mace is allowed?
Bear mace is for home protection. You can’t really come up with an excuse for walking around in the city with it. Dog mace is easier, at least you MIGHT be able to come up with some intricate story about neighbourhood dogs threatening you and local kids. It’s a shame pepper spray isn’t legal, but then again governments in this country have never cared about women defending themselves against rapists, or people defending themselves against muggers. It’s all about the poor misunderstood violent criminals in Canada.
Improvised weapons are always better to carry around. Things like empty bottles, chains, spray paint, etc. that you can claim you found on the ground to defend yourself, or serve a legitimate purpose other than just being a weapon. Knives and brass knuckles are harder to explain.
The problem is that 95% of people are not comfortable with aggression or defensive fighting. The swarmers are all set and ready to attack, and they’re used to the adrenaline and the danger. Hell that’s why they do it in the first place – it’s a drug to them. The average Joe or Jane simply can’t function when confronted. Adrenaline hits the system and we freak out – we don’t really know what’s happening. It’s not necessarily fear; it’s that people usually don’t fight and so on. The best way to deal with it is to take some classes where you get accustomed to getting in people’s face and where you learn some basic reactions to confrontation that will at least give you a chance. It’s only through practice that most people will know what to do when attacked. I would like to see these idiots bashed and in hospital.
How ’bout a big club… er… I mean cane or walking stick. I don’t think it can be misconstrued as a weapon especially if you have medical proof from a doc. Methinks I’ll start doing that. I do have difficulty walking.
Another swarming by a group of black youths – it’s finally been said on the CBC site, they actually used the word BLACK.
There’s a Black Educators Association, a Black Firefighters Association and probably others – this must be devastating to all the good work they are trying to do on behalf of their members and community.
