What is the deal with the sushi joints in this city that list crab on the menu but in fact use processed crab-flavoured pollock? If they want serve fake shit fine, but don’t call it what it isn’t! No restaurant would survive if they sold pork as beef or tofurkey as turkey; I don’t see why it should be different for sushi.
This kind of misrepresentation is at best unethical and probably illegal.
Wise the fuck up sushi purveyors.

that does sound kinda sleazy.
did you kick up a stink to a manager? may have gotten a free or discounted meal out of it…..
Call Gordon Ramsay to straighten them up, you fucking donkey.
yeah that would be a piss off, I wish Halifax had a bit more of a variety in their “fine dining” choices…not that I could afford it as a “poor student” ….but still
What kind of crab did you think you were getting for ~$6 a roll?
You’ll notice the rolls that contain real crab (identified as such, typically noting their origin) are twice the price.
Wise the fuck up menu reader.
OP: I think you’ve uncovered a massive Japanese conspiracy intended to fool unsuspecting Canadians into buying a cheaper product for a lower price!
You should immediately start an investigation with the Unnessesary Investigation Unit of CSIS!
Tell the world OP! The truth is out there!
Sushi is lame and nothing but a trend food for pretentious “artsy” kids. Just talking about eating sushi makes them think they appear/sound/are smarter and more in-tune with the world and people.
Fuck sushi. Give me a donair or cheeseburger for $6 straight the fuck up instead. Can’t get full off some seaweed and rice bits.
mmm donair
You just can’t get a good donair at a sushi restaurant anymore. They all use that shitty donair-flavoured pollock now!
What’s this city coming to!?
next they’ll be using cheez whiz instead of real cheese on my donair.
OH THE INHUMANITY OF IT ALL.
BTW: pollack is often used as fake crab AND lobster…honestly, after the lobster overload I had this xmas…I’d rather have the pollack. ack.
actually other than the consistency i find the simcrab a pretty decent copy most times. since im a cheap bastard i wouldnt mind.
I thought that it was common knowledge.
Ditch the pseudo-sushi madness! And go with NGF and meself! Although, I’m starting to assume my McNuggets are being substituted for rubber.
Dino you sound like my kinda honey!
actually polluck does have crab in it, its just not the only thing in it…
Hmm, and what’s in the crab? Remnants of anchovies? Maybe Krill? I suppose this is why I’ve become a borderline veggie-dork.
PS: Aww Fat, you sound like my kind of Bee.
that sounds like donair-talk…
They promise one thing but serve another. Ergo…legit bitch.
LOUKAS!, I’m glad you are with the Unnecessary Investigation Unit of CSIS and are so wise about these things, but not everyone is.
…and pollock is not a “kind of crab”. That’s retarded.
Yes it’s true sushi eaters are a bunch of effete assholes. Can you believe there’s a whole country of goldfish tending sandal wearers who eat that crap all the time? Crazy foreigners what are they thinking? Well they pay for it with stunning longevity and obesity rates.
Thank God in Halifax we can get honest to goodness Canadian food like Donairs and Cheez Whiz. Let’s not forget KD and Swanson’s Hungry Man Dinners. Real food for real people!
Lmao! Well said, lovehatehalifax….
Ah yes, sushi in Halifax. Actually, it’s not all that much better in other countries outside Japan as well, except perhaps the ones right by the Land of the Rising Sun. My parents have “sushi” all the time that they buy from Sobeys. Whatever desire I ever had to pay my hard-earned money to eat that was ruined when I heard the “sushi chefs” speaking Chinese together…
It’s like anything else in life – if you want authentic Japanese food you have to go to Japan, and barring that you have to have it made by a chef properly trained for years in Japan by Japanese experts, not Mr. Miyagi and his California Rolls…..
Raw fish. Why?
Because it’s effin delicious, that’s why.
There’s nothing wrong with Halifax sushi, so long as you know where to go. There are a few well-trained Japanese chefs here, and an abundance of fresh seafood, so I can’t really see how much different a good sushi experience here would be from one in Japan. Anyone buying “sushi” from Sobeys gets the taste and quality they deserve.
Don’t be hatin’ on sushi, y’all.
I’m totally digging sushi these days. I find it’s great hangover food. Lots of rice and protein but cool and refreshing too. I used to be a greasy spoon hangover eater, but not since I found sushi.
You know, I should really bite the bullet and try it one of these days. The thought doesn’t appeal to me since I grew up in a fishing village so I learned to cook the hell out of fish (salt cod for example), but how can I know I hate it if I never tried it. I wonder if any of the haters on here have ever tried sushi?
i find it funny because i grew up with aboriginal youth, who were into raw fish, eels and other sea food decades before it became trendy here.
didn’t pay $6 for imitation fish mixed with seaweed and rice either.
actually, i was into eating raw eel about 25 years ago too. damn i’m way ahead of the trends.
Just start with the rolls then move on to the hunks of raw fish. The rolls can be fun and flavourful if done right. Anything with eel is good too.
tried the rolls and didn’t get past them. tried them a few times actually.
if i couldn’t get beyond them, i wasn’t going to waste money on any more of it. honeslty, there’s no flavour to them. the texture is horrid also.
honestly, i think i insulted the wait staff and chef when i spit it into a napkin and told my friends they can have the rest of mine since it was already paid for.
I agree with Nigel, I miss my authentic asian food Speaking on a chinese food sense, for the most part the best you can get here is a fast food version If anyone knows where you can get the good stuff I would love to know. And sushi is awesome, I lucked out and worked in a “fancy” kitchen out west, one of the cooks there made some dam good sushi, although I really don’t have a problem with any sushi here, there was a pretty good Japanese restaurant that I went to in Dartmouth, but unfortunately I can’t remember where it was and what it was called, it sucks kinda cause I would love to go back.
Any one here or ever try durian?
NGF: LOL…well I guess it’s donairs and cheeseburgers for you then 🙂
i find it funny because i grew up with aboriginal youth

Pure fucking bullshit. The Mi’kmaq are not aboriginals. Learn your own history you hateful nazi.
