I came in to get my cat’s spay incision wound re-stitched after she tore out the sutures, and you felt that you could sew her red, raw wound without administering anesthesia. I have never in my life heard a cat scream like that, and I am going to have a hard time getting the sound of my kitten in that much pain out of my head.

Elizabethan Collar?
Oh my god… that’s really quite disturbing.
Poor little kitty =(
Wow, not cool.
soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur….
… Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr, purr, purr
this makes me sad, though perhaps the vet was trying to save the kitty from possible bad side effects of anesthesia. Or maybe poking her with a bunch needles to freeze her would be just as bad doing up the stitches.
Anyway, poor kitty. I know that my heart pretty much bursts from sadness if I even think about my kitty in pain.
Are there places to report animal cruelty to?
The regulatory board for practicing vets is at nsvma.ca
I am sure they’d be more than interested in investigating this complaint and prevent this ‘doctor’ from doing this to other poor helpless creatures!
Can you give us an idea of which clinic this is? Please report them.
Can you give us an idea of which clinic this is? Please report them…
PLEASE give us an idea of where this clinic is! This is DISGUSTING.
Thankfully I have a great vet who LOVES my cats. They’re super great with them and they get lots of pats and hugs when they go there.
OP: did the vet keep your cat overnight when you got her spayed? A LOT of vets won’t keep them overnight, however all the research I did says that it’s best for the cat to stay overnight because they will be immobile and heal faster. So, when i was looking for vets to have my female cat spayed I made sure I chose one that kept the cat in overnight (especially since I had another playful kitten at home).
I hope your kitty is feeling better, OP! Report the vet to nsvma (and give us an idea of where this vet is!).
And cats are usually quite stoic about pain…one of my cats broke a leg one time and he never whined about the pain. People who think nothing of hurting animals shouldn’t become vets, and the vet should have consulted with you first.
my cat got spayed and then went into heat a year later. called the vet and the girl at the desk simply said ” thats impossible”…like i was a retard or something…I came prepared and showed her video right there…she turned six shades of red and got the actual vet…showed the doc and she said”hmmmmmm”..well its possible that if even a little piece of ovarian tissue is left behind then the cat can continue to go into heat at regular intervals…well…ok…so we still had to pay for an additional surgery on the premise that if they found tissue left behind we would be refunded …and then after all that…although my cat is happy, she has a bulbus air pocket bubble sticking out of her belly…but as long as she is happy i will let it go …for now…vets should care and also be able to hold themselves accountable…my vet almost cried when i took my dog in to get put down the other day…i know I have a good vet NOW…but that other one…phew…what a head case
Awww sorry about your dog, shaker 🙁
I had a vet in the valley who always looked into ways to avoid putting my cats down, and when she did have to put them down (three in total), we got a card each and every time from her afterwards.
And newt: you’re right — cats have to be in pretty bad shape and pretty sick before they’ll show signs that they’re in rough shape. My female cat has IBS and before we put her on special vet food she would constantly be vomiting and be constipated, but was always her usual sweet self, though you can tell she’s happier now 🙂
this is the op: my cat’s incision wound is now infected and oozing puss. fan-fucking-tastic. she’s being given antibiotics and her wound is being cleaned twice daily. growing up, i had ten family pets go through the same standard procedure of being spayed, and none of them have had to go through this. i feel awful.
as for the vet clinic: it’s located on the intersection in a north end neighbourhood.
my cat was not kept overnight when i got her spayed. the vet told me that this was only customary practice if she was to be getting declawed, as well (which i would never do to a feline). part of me feels as if she should have been kept overnight because she’s extremely active; another part of me is glad that she was in my care after getting the procedure because at least then i knew she was being treated with the love she deserves!
i am absolutely going to report this vet. thanks for the link.
Good luck Aspersions. Stick it to the evil bastard. Hope your baby bounces back quickly.
We had a lousy experience at the place just south of Little Nashville. Never went back; never had to. *sob*.
“getting declawed”…thought that was illegal, well it’s certainly cruel and unnecessary
Nobody wants to read a comment that is four thousand words long. It really isnt necessary to write an hour and a half long comment. The ones that long probably dont even get read. Yawn.
having had a cat declawed (after a lot of thought) as he was very dominate and agressive towards me, they kept him for 48 hours. I was allowed to visit him and I believe them to be great vets. I got my babies already fixed so I didn’t have to go through what you have but I guess it’s a matter of asking questions and getting referrals. They are a service and a life is in their hands…take the time to ask around. I’ve got several vets closer to home but I chose mine from a referral and was glad I did.
Did having your cat declawed help with the dominance issues funnygirl? My friend is having an awful time with a very aggressive cat, and has consulted behaviour people, tried all kinds of methods and is told that maybe the next step is meds… maybe declawing (as much as I’m against it normally) would be a somewhat better solution. She’s heard bad stories about the drugs for cats too.
I don’t know how well these work but you can get those gel nail caps for cats. Even if they’re working through some aggression issues the caps keep the claws from being sharp. I’ve heard from some people that they’re awesome, although others tell me they’re a challenge for some cats to keep on.
Depending on the cat they’re probably a sonofabitch to put on. Yet another brilliant idea that wasn’t thought completely through; like those “environmentally friendly” low flush toilets that have to be flushed 5 times to ensure that all your rosie o’donnells make it to the harbour.
dr. bale in tantallon is an amazing vet. she would do anything for the animals. havent gone anywhere else and i’ve had atleast 10 pets thus far. fabulous woman.
ps OP. poor kitty, hope she feels better soon :).
You MUST report this. This is abuse of the worst kind to the kitten. The name of the clinic must be made public so that no one ever goes there again. Please, I beg you, report this to the cops.
aspersions: not customary? Well for some vets, maybe not, but for mine they kept my kitty in no questions. She was good as new when she got home the next day — we had to put her back in her carrier for a while because she trotted out like she owned the world and wanted to play with her brother. She heeled very quickly with no problems. The vet wouldn’t let her go home until she was drinking, eating and peeing. So the vet you went to is full of c-r-a-p (and too cheap to keep the cat in overnight).
Also: if you clip your cat’s claws from the time you get them, they do get used to it SOMEWHAT. My female cat’s really good about it now and my male cat who HATES having his paws touched at all is ok with it (he gets antsy though near the end). I clip my kitties’ claws despite the fact that they don’t scratch furniture or people because they’re so sharp they get caught sometimes so it’s easier on them, really.
In any event, my vet clinic is in clayton park and my cats just LOVE it. There are two in CP and both are great 🙂
pretty kitty: i don’t doubt that they were too cheap to keep my cat in overnight.
she might have to go back to the vet again (four times in a week) because her incision wound is not healing properly. 🙁
roxyraven: i have heard nothing but fantastic, wonderful things about dr. bale. i heard that she was retiring, though?
Aspersions, I just took my 2 girls cats to Weste Animal Hospital in Lawrencetown. It’s a long drive out there but not only are they really inexpensive but the service was fantastic. They kept my girls until they were absolutely sure that they were no longer under affects of sedation, they allowed me to call with any post surgery questions and if I had any concerns that needed in person inspect, they said that would be free of charge. I highly recommend them for future kitty care.
Every animal I have ever had, as long as I can remember has gone to Richardson’s in Sackville, even when I lived in the valley I took my cat there. if it was just a check up, when she ate the glass beads, I still don’t know why, I took her to Cornwallis, she wasn’t choking any more, but taking her on the hour car ride for vet loyalty seems a little too far. but when she had to be put down,8 years later, I took her to Richardson’s, I would definitely report the vet you took your poor kitty to.
on the subject of de-claw, I’m on the fence. it can be good if it was done before they’re an adult, so they wouldn’t miss their main line of defence, only to an indoor cat and with no other animals in the house. and teach any kids in the house that kitty doesn’t like being squeezed like a sponge.
but on the other hand, since its just me and my cat, and he isn’t tearing the house apart, shredding my nephews when they come over, or shredding me, he can keep his claws. I do clip them down though.
