Halifax theatre people are so exclusive. Why not open your shows to other people? Why not work with other theatre companies for fundraising/promotional help? It is so frustrating when talented people don’t get opportunities just because they didn’t kiss enough ass. And yet, you want everyone to support you and “support local.”

  1. Why is this even an issue? Halifax theatre people are exclusive… so fucking what?!

  2. ” Why don’t you support anybody but yourself and your friends?

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that the working definition of “Support Local”

In the theatre world “Buddy” is simply the first half of a four syllable word.

  3. Sorry person, but it’s really difficult to make a living working in theatre. That’s why there are so many independent companies in this city, it’s the only way most people can get work! And like every other business, people tend to hire those they know! That’s life.

  4. It is really exclusive but there are lots of places to go and lots of independents. If you want to get in with a crowd at one of the more recognized community theater groups, just keep showing up to auditions and stay positive.

I love acting, I’m a thrice published author and I do a bunch of other creative things that I’m sure no one here cares about. I do it because I really enjoy it. A lot of the folks in these places are HIGHLY pretentious and snobby. You will be forced to endure this bat-shittery for a while but eventually, you’ll probably end up on stage. Volunteer for a couple backstage jobs, too. Stage managing, assistant stage managing, set construction/design concessions, usher, etc…it’s boring and thankless work but it will get your foot in the door.

I was lucky, my first audition landed me a lead role at one of the three major community theaters. After the show, I was offered a spot on the board. I did that for a while but there was too much drama off stage for my liking, so I moved on.

When all is said and done, though, OP…Community theater is the butt of many jokes – even among actors and creative types. If you’re expecting anything other than to have a good time doing something you enjoy you are kidding yourself my friend. Otherwise, keep at it.

JesusHTittyfuckingIdrisElbaChrist! How am I going to get the coffee off my monitor?
I friggin’ love you, you happy little apple. >: )

  7. I’ve noticed that the majority of the time – not all the time mind you – arts are only supported by other arteests, their friends and family. And it’s usually because they suck. I do support what I like though.

  8. Snubiz – Even the “big acts” start out by playing to friends and family, not everybody makes it to Wembley for their first gig.

“What? You can’t see the sarcasm in the verses I spit?
What? You think I just got lucky and didn’t work for this shit?
Bitch I’ve been working at this ever since I was a kid,
I played a million empty shows to only family and friends.” – Hollywood, Undead

  9. I realize that and said so – majority of the time – not all the time mind you. I was also referring to being artisitc in a much broader sense. The bitch was about theatre, your response is about musicians and judging by the regular barbs here about “barista” NSCAD graduates, I’m not alone in my observation. I just said it more directly.
