Name your price.
ALWAYS keep your cards close to your chest-even with “friends”.
Your price is your price.
Try not to think out loud and give out too much information about how many people you are bringing with you, etc. That’s your business and the client will find out when you get there. Extra info gives others more wiggle room to whittle you down. Stand your ground, exactly as you did, and never let them see you get upset or offended.

If others are quoting 3 times as much for the same work:
Either
1. There are some greedy buggers out there.
2.The quotes were pulled out of the air (or his ass)
3. Perhaps YOU are undervaluing your own services

  1. i think it is about the bitch that was lost in the great wars. regarding a friend doing some renovation for another friend

  2. Totally pointless, neither love nor bitch.

Whittling is lost art. Does anyone do that anymore? Jed Clampett was the last person I knew that did it.

  3. I’m pretty sure PG’s right.
That was the first (and only plausible) thing that came to mind.
“If you’re good at something, never do it for free.”

Try to lowball me 4 grand?
I’d start upping the price for having to deal with a cheapskate idiot.

  4. I loved whittling when I was a kid….and I’m with the Zedster on how to deal with people that think they are smart if they cheat/scam someone out of their rightful earnings….
