O.K., I’m all for using cloth but could you cheap fucks have two people on cash, on to ring thru the grub, one to pack said grub??? Those fucking bags are no picnic to pack, especially the ones the size of a Mack truck. I pack like shit but I try to. I just hate to see these poor cashiers struggling with these newfangled carriers while a line up of people are shooting daggers at her. Give these people a goddamn break – at least give them a wandering bag boy or something.

If the company is so cheap that they’re charging for plastic bags now, what do you think the odds are that they’re going to hire two people to do the job of one person?
Nil. Profit margins trump employees.
I wouldn’t mind being charged for the bags and having to bag my own stuff if they’d just hire more cashiers. There’s about 20 checkouts at any given grocery store but ‘ve never seen more than 6 open at a time. Even on Saturdays.
how about not charging for the bags but i’ll pack it myself. bread on top on eggs not the other way around.
Actually…the reusable bags AREN’T that hard to pack. You just have to know how to pack properly and cashiers aren’t taught that these days. I always got compliments on my packing jobs when i packed reusable bags because I’d pack them like a puzzle — fit everything together nicely; I didn’t just throw shit in willy nilly like most of the cashiers *I’ve* encountered. I mean, last week someone put bathroom cleaner in with my produce and meat and cans in with my bread! Seriously, fuck off and put like items together.
Also, Nevermind: it’s not that they WON’T hire more cashiers, it’s that no one WANTS to do the job. Places like SS and Sobeys are so short staffed that I know of cashiers who routinely don’t show up for their shifts and they don’t get fired. It’s SICK…so, if they had the staff they WOULD put more cashiers on….they just don’t have the resources…more demand than supply in this case.
I thought of that point after I posted my earlier comment PK…
If they can’t staff the place, then they need to pay more than minimum wage. Supply and demand.
Recommendation: Gather up all those nickels and use them to hire more cashiers and/or pay the staff more so that people will want to do the jobs. If more people want to work there, then you can have a higher standard for weeding out the types PK describes.
okay, i have two somewhat irrelevant and funny replies to this.
Nevermind: here i was thinking that the 5c for the bags wasnt cus of the economy n they were too cheap to afford them , but to encourage being ‘green’… haha, good cover.
also… i’m starting to think if they ever intend to need to open all their cashes at any of the holidays, or in an emergency.. in those new superstores, it seems they just build as many as fit the dimensions of the building.. i dont think ive EVER seen all lanes open at barrington super store. or north end.
Nevermind, you are completely right.
When i was hired I was told I’d be getting more than min wage, actually….and then low and behold they pay me 8 fucking 10. Let’s just say I didn’t stay long.
Thing IS, places like costco are offering a lot more. I’ve been told they pay $15/hr on sundays to put stuff in your carts at the check outs! And when you work at a place that pays min wage you realise you can’t live off of that, and the aggravation of said job isn’t worth it. I have two university degrees and I was being treated like shit by people who couldn’t even speak properly because I was obviously lower than them because I’m checking out their groceries. You’d be surprised at how many people I worked with with university degrees and such working min wage because they couldn’t find anything else.
You’re better off on welfare, honestly, because working part time hours (because they won’t hire anyone full time) making min wage isn’t worth it. And you get free insurance if you’re on welfare. And why go stand on your feet for 8 hours doing shit work when you can sit at home and do nothing and get free money? I mean people really have to wonder why so many stay on social assistance for so long?
and you’ve always had to buy or bring bags at costco since they’ve never provided them.
closest is the used boxes after opening all the shit off the pallets.
I think people have always accepted that fact, zZz because the shit you buy at costco usually doesn’t fit into a bag anyway (well a normal sized bag).
