What the fuck are you staring at? Have you never seen an Arabian kid cry? I have. I actually do everyday, dealing with a normal kid. If you’re waiting for us to beat her and report us, too bad, you’re out of luck, I don’t beat my kids.
By the way, I love my kids more than you do, and they wear the best clothes and they are the happiest kids. I am sorry about your miserable childhood that you take out on immigrants… —Abu Omar
This article appears in Jul 22-28, 2010.

…’they wear the best clothes’ – does that mean that my three Frenchy and Sally Ann-clad kids were not happy? Piss off with the attitude.
you see them cry everyday and yet they are the happiest kids? they are the happiest kids because they have the nicest clothes? that idiocy aside, I don’t think people stare because you’re Arabian. Sometimes it’s just hard to be around a crying child and not be able to comfort it. Sometimes, yes, it even triggers our own childhood trauma and it’s painful. It doesn’t sound like racial prejudice but you do sound like a bitch, so I guess you’ve come to the right place.
Hey, Abu, can I borrow some oil?
“By the way, I love my kids more than you do, and they wear the best clothes and they are the happiest kids” so thats how arabs guage love.expensive clothes and the “children crying everyday”. you are in the west, and respect our ways.we tend to look out for children in need, and a crying child draws attention.
you have a problem with us westerns and our ways, move.i am sure the country you came from is much better.that would explain why you are here.
har har har you are funny xSIXXESx. Oh, you were serious? My bad.
if your kid was crying I was staring at the annoying fucking kid making irritating noises that I hate.
I don’t care anything about where you’re from or what stupid clothes you have them in.
By the way xSIXXESx, kids cry everyday. By the way xSIXXESx, I make very little, but I buy the best for my kids, unlike westerners who drink and buy drugs instead of getting the best for their kids. Ofcourse not all westerners, but those who stare, and assholes like you.
It’s not that a crying child draws attention, your attention, but Arabs walking or talking draw your attention. And at last, you used your only weapon” go back “, this tells me what kind of person you are.
Lastly, you know nothing about people who come from other countries, it’s not about better or worse. Non-westerners, like you prefer to call them, could be here for multiple reasons. They could be here for education, vacation, refugees (I bet thats the only class of immigrants you know, and I don’t mean class as a social or economic class, but immigration class), or Entrepreneurship, to hire idiots like you. Most immigrants come and spend lots of money before they settle, and you bitch, have no right to tell anyone to go back for voicing their opinion. Why don’t you go the fuck back. I came to this country because it treats everyone equally, not to hear go back every once in a while.
Hi “Nice Goin’ Fat”. You are funny. But there is nothing called abu, I am Abu Omar.
I don’t have Oil, and the country I came from does not produce oil. Educate yourself, read books and don’t rely on media outlets for knowledge.
Hi “TTFN”,
Ofcourse not necessarily. Sorry if I offended people who do not buy the best clothes. But you wouldn’t be offended if you knew that I have a very low income. I do the best for my kids, spend a good amount of time with them, and buy them the best, when I don’t buy it for myself. There is no need to look at a baby crying in a mall. Kids want everything they see.
holy fuck SPAZ!!!
Wow, NGF, nice asshole comment. Lots of asshole comments here.
I wonder what you would all think if you saw a child ill-dressed for the weather, or in rags 5 times his size? I think you all knew what the OP meant by mentioning the clothes, TTFN and the rest of you! Grow the fuck up!!
I have no doubt in my mind the OP has had his or her share of dirty looks, and without the crying child. In case none of you have noticed, when it comes to Arabs, there is a fair amount of unfair fear and judgement coming from ignorant imebciles (of which Halifax has more than it’s fair share!!) who know nothing about the outside world apart from what they see on the fucking news- which would have you think every Pakistani is a suicide bomber yet to be recruited)! Fucking patheric. No wonder immigrants choose to go to bigger cities like Toronto.
Typo alert: that’s ‘pathetic’, not ‘patheric’.
yeah, i have, when they were beaten with a fucking big whip. and i didn’t have mr. magnum on me, the lucky bastard.
And to Sixxes. Are you really as dumb as you sound? It’s obvious that when the OP said “I love my kids more than you do”, he wasn’t referring to his loving his kids more than you loving your kids. No, I think he meant HE loves his kids more than YOU love his kids. D’uuuuuhhhhhhh!!!
I think kay converted.
Z: some of those immigrants in Toronto formed a terrorist club. Not all immigrants are here for the same reasons. Most are looking for a better life. Some have other agendas. Unfortunately, as in most circumstances, a few bad apples always ruin it for the rest.
That is something Abu Omar might like to keep in mind. Western attitudes towards a particular group of people were influenced forever when some of that group decided to murder thousands of innocent people with airplanes flown into western buildings. If that atrocity was delivered by Canadians to Omar’s country then perhaps it’s citizens would mistrust Canadians or anyone who looked like them as well. And Abu Omar, providing your children with the best clothes does NOT mean that you love your kids more than parents who can’t or won’t. Not all people who shop at Frenchies, Sally-Ann and Value village are there because they spend their money on booze, smokes and drugs. Being thrifty-minded in order to afford other things for one’s children, like rent or a downpayment and mortgage to keep a roof over their head, food, education, vacations, medications or special needs etc., is a commendable thing. Their kids are no less happy or loved than yours.
Maybe people’s attention were drawn to your crying child because crying children are by their very actions invoking attention, no matter their ethnicity. Try not being so touchy. And the amateur psychiatric observations about the quality of people’s childhood’s causing them to stare at you and your screaming child just smack of the same careless generalizations you accuse others of directing toward you. It’s troubling that someone would equate happiness with something as superficial as the clothing on their backs. Troubling that they would instill this superficial value in their offspring. More troubling still that one should feel superiority over others for their own superficial values.
@Abu Omar,
As-salaamu ‘alaykum. Kayf Haaluka? Welcome to Canada. Please excuse those few rude people who stare at strangers and tell them things like “go home”. These people don’t know any better.
Abu Omar, you’re a racist prick.
Abu Omar you are the pot calling the kettle black. You have a very low self esteem obviously and feel the need to lash out at others that are different then you and blame them for your mis-givings.
I wouldn’t care if you were green, white, yellow or blue or where you were from, if your kid was crying I would look or even stare to figure out why your kid was crying.
Your not the only person that get looks we all do at some point from people from all walks of life.
Abu Omar, you are a hypocrit, plain and simple. And you’re a racist too. You think it’s ok to lump all “Westerners” into one pile and stereotype them all, but it’s a crime if someone does it to Arabs. You’re a judgemental person looking for any excuse to hate people unlike yourself. I hope that you find everything that you’re looking for, which includes the hateful stares. Hopefully your kids will see you for the bigotted, racist, ignorant, prejudiced hypocrit you are and do their best to turn out exactly the opposite of you.
The crying kid was an inside job brought to you by the CIA/CSIS/FBI/McDonalds* – delete as applicable
Z, what’s yo’ problem, man? I *asked* if I could borrow some. I’d gladly loan Abu my TV tray or something in return.
a plant! I knew it…
I mean, what typical baby has a security earbud in one ear…. really???
Was it a kid crying or a cry for war on the infidels?
Oceanlady, I’m aware that most foreigners come here to find a good life, and I’m aware that a few don’t. I don’t think western attitudes should be so influenced over a select few that were here to do wrong; I think that’s wrong, actually, and it’s how racism is fueled. Do you not think people like Abu DO get their share of dirty looks from ignorant westerners who see their ethnicity and assume they’re some kind of terrorist? Because I have cousins who I know would treat him this way; two of them wouldn’t even shake my sister’s Japanese boyfriend’s hand when they met him! I just really dislike the way people here immediately jumped on the OP, picking at the tiny details of something (the clothing comment) they probably misunderstood anyway- instead of looking at what he was really trying to say.
“Most immigrants come and spend lots of money before they settle” Yup, that is corrrrrect!
Anyway I dunno who’s racist who is not, and I don’t care, but that “if you don’t like it go back to where you came from” phrase makes me want to bite out the veins that feed your heart. I hate it so much.
I don’t think they shake hands in Japanese culture honestly.
Z: I don’t think attitudes should be shaped by the adverse actions of a select few bad apples either. But it is human nature to do so. That is not to say it cannot be overcome.
The OP’s clothing comment was stated in a way that he felt superior to parents who don’t clothe their spawn in the very best and was passing that superficial quality on to his child. It is his choice to spend all his money on clothing for his kids. That doesn’t make his kids any happier than parents who budget clothing differently out of necessity or by choice. I’d be more concerned about the message needing to wear the very best sends to OP’s kids. Is it not better to value what is in one’s head and heart than what is covering up their outer dermis?
Beautiful, absolutely fucking priceless, case of reverse racism.
We fucking idiotic white people…
I’m not against any race, but you fucking crass pricks who come over here, and expect us to bow to you cause OMG your skin is darker! WOW!
I don’t bow to my own people…go fuck yourself. With a 60g sandpaper covered, metal, multi-pronged dildo.
Who said anything about dark skin …
uh oh
I’m gonna head to the shelter…
a bomb seems to have been dropped.
Two things usually happen when a kid crys in public, people stare, or people avoid looking. Maybe you weren’t beating her, maybe you were screaming at her, who knows and who fucking cares. Being a mom and professional nanny, I know that theres always going to be people who stare, or make rude comments, or whatever when you are dealing with an upset child. Get used to it and get the fuck over it. Obvouisly you have your own issues that you need to work on. Whatever happened to you that day, probably would have happened if it was the same situation but with white people. Get over yourself, most people dont actually care what color or nationality you are.
duck and cover zZz
Welcome to Canada! Maybe try other ways of keeping your kids happy, besides dressing them pretty. That will help with the stares. It happens to everyone, guess what, just because you’re Arabian doens’t makes you exclusive, please don’t make it about race. And when posting on the bitch board, try not to sound like a materialistic jackass – it’s just asking for rebuttals. You’re fair game when you post, dude, doesn’t matter where you’re from.
guess it’s nothing but spam spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam and spam to eat for a while. I’ve got a one year supply though I think I’d take the can to my jugular if I have to eat spam for a year… and why are all the board games multiplayer!?!?!?! curses.
Bring your gameboy and a 10 year supply of batteries. You’ll be fine. Or grab a random stranger on the way to the shelter!
Well, NGF, my sister’s boyfriend offered his hand to shake. It sure as hell isn’t as if my straw-chewin’ cousins who’ve never been out of the HRM in their lives would know anything about Japanese culture, either! Nope; they think that because they’ve discovered Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and the like (such pioneers!), they’re intelligent and sophistocated enough not to require it.
ralmn… and what, cut my rations in half???
if anything they’d be the unlucky one… I’d play board games until they starved to death.
then I’d have something other than spam on the menu.
I’ll have to find someone who’d chubby so they’re tender and succulent.
Oceanlady, I understand human nature as well. And although maybe you and others took the OP’s comment about clothing to be superior, I didn’t take it that way- and it’s not because I dess my baby in Stella McCartney and Tommy Hillfiger either, or place any value on it whatsoever. The OP is obviously feeling scrutinzied here for being Arab, and even more for being an Arab with a crying baby. I’m sure you yourself understand what it’s like to be scrutinized in public as a parent alone- it can be a real challenge to not let it get to you. You acknowledge the fact that “people attitudes shouldn’t be shaped by the adverse actions of a select few bad apples either. But it is human nature to do so” So obviously you are aware of the awful scrutiny some immigrants are exposed to as well. I’d say trying to keep ignorant fools from getting to you might be an even bigger challenge . So why then are you can’t you forget the akward clothing comment, which was probably misunderstood, and try to understand where the OP’s feelings are coming from?
You don’t see many babies on the street so when we see a crying baby/young child we pay attention, especially when it goes on for what seems like a long time but is really only 30 seconds. Kids don’t cry without a reason.
Omar is far too sensitive, we look at crying kids because they are crying. He needs cultural classes to learn more about our culture and concern for people of all ages.
Buying fancy expensive clothes for little kids means
a) you are over indulgent or
b) have too much money or
c) have more money than brains or
d) fail to realise that little kids don’t care how much the clothes cost or
e) need to know the way to Walmart, Sears or the Bay.
Pardis Parker’s Afghan:
http://www.thecoast.ca/HaliwoodInsider/arc…
I think all of you who have obsessed with the clothing comment should stop and think of the possibility that perhaps you simply have different value systems. You know…a culture that interprets OP’s wanting best clothes for his children as materialism (hence evil in the eco-friendly and anti-luxury century), versus a culture that values being presentable when going out in public. OP even said that he buys clothes for his children but not for himself…I sure can appreciate that as I grew up having skin reaction to cheap synthetic material, foot problem from cheap shoes with thin soles, and skinny legs that called for expensive socks that would not slide down to my ankles. My parents put me in nice clothes, and that was one of many ways they showed they cared about me.
Given the fact that kids grow out of their clothes so quickly, it just makes sense to not break the bank to buy expensive clothes for your kids. It’s not like adults who have (for the most part) stopped growing. I’d definitely buy clothes for my kid at old navy or from the sale rack at the gap or even at walmart because you’re just going to have to replace the clothes in a few months anyway (esp if they’re babies — clothes usually go from 0-3, 3-6, 6-12, etc…). Even value village and frenchies makes sense because you can usually get great clothes there that haven’t been worn for very long because of the growing issue.
Meanwhile, I have no problem going to Banana Republic and spending $75 on a cardigan because I know it’ll last me a while and I know I’ll have great use from it (it’ll stand up better than a cheapie from walmart).
Besides, there are A LOT of cute outfits for kids at old navy and walmart.
OP: go fuck yourself.
But how else is Baby Gap going to get your kids to become tramps, ghettoed and ho’ed.
Old Navy rocks for kids clothes!! Nice, not overdone, clothes and great prices!!
… perhaps the OP’s perception of the best is Old Navy or Frenchies. Perhaps it’s just nice, neat and clean clothes. Perhaps it is Tommy Hilfiger or CK. Chill ppl. Why are we harping on the clothes! What’s so offensive about that comment? If you dress your kids prsentably what does it matter what someone else thinks. My word. I quite like it when Ma buys me nice clothes, lol.
… and we wonder why people die everyday from hate crimes. Just read this thread, it’s repulsive. Please stop…what is the point? No one wins, we all lose, we lose respect and tolerance of others who are different, we lose respect for eachother and ourselves. We don’t all have to agree but we do all have to live together. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do it without the hate? Hate is a waste of precious energy and time.
i agree completely Sin, and parasailing donkey! This thread makes me sick. And Pretty Kitty, telling the OP to go fuck himself? I think you should go fuck YOUR self. People here are such fucking defensive bullies. Look how up in arms they get over a comment about clothing- ignoring the real intention behind the Op’s post. what a fucking bunch of sadsacks. What an embarassment.
go fuck YOUR self Z.
You’re not my buddy, guy.
You’re not my guy, friend.
You’re not my friend, buddy….
Um yeah, ok!! Zzz. Did someone take one too many valiums at lunch?
Z sounds like you need to take a monster-sized dump, man.
sadly no, I’m still here and available to type…
so I suppose I had just the right amount….
will try harder next time.
Too bad that when “most” white people are faced with the truth, that “most” of them are racist, they flip..hehehe.
Abu points the racist comment finger whilst spouting racial comments but doesn’t seem to get it. Hey, Abu…pssssst…newsflash…we are all the SAME race, the HUMAN race. We ALL have the same origins, in that wonderful cradle of humanity called Africa. How our descendants evolved after they left ‘The Dark Continent’ is nothing more than an accident of nature. As members of the human race we should rejoice in and celebrate our diversity. Leave the smugness and superiority complexes where they belong…in the ignorance and intolerance of the past.
Oceanlady, best does not mean expensive, but again, in the “West”,and I didn’t say westerners, because I am NOT racist like some are, people tend to take things for material value. When I say best, I mean best, not expensive. Best means shelters from cold, cover your body and clean. It looks good, also doesn’t mean expensive. Why do you think of material equivalance. Ohhhh, because she’s Arabian you assumed I am rich. No, I am not rich.
Oh my fuck, can the moderator delete this post? Apu Nahasapeemapetilon Ph.D, keeps putting his foot in it, and people keep responding.
It’s raising my blood pressure (even though it shouldn’t) and tomorrow is my weekly Big Mac (aka salt rush). I cannot afford to waste my pressure rise here.
In completely unrelated news: BP reported a 17 billion dollar loss for the oil spill. My my.
Exactly, such babies. Ignored the whole thing, and spent all their energy on the clothing comment. You’re such an idiots, Z tried to explain, but I think I will have to wait for the next generation…….. I am called racist if I try to resist racism. No wonder others resorted to other means…
Abu, Z here. I’ve been the one defending your post all through this thread. White people can be racist, and so can eveybody else. Where do I start? I’m well aware of the caste system in India- and all of the ATROCITIES commiteed by many members upper castes on many of those in lower castes, for example. I wonder if it was much different in Pakistan- they were at one point the same country, afterall! How about what happened in Rwanda? The Hutus slaughtering hundreds of thousands of Tutsis?? Was that not racist? I know for a fact that Lokele Congolese think that Bangala Congolese are only good for thieving and warring. Or how about the fact that many Koreans hate Japanese, and that many Japanese hate the the Chinese. I could go on, but I won’t. I’m sorry Abu, but whites are definetly NOT alone in their racism! Far, far, FAR from it.
Ocean Lady. You called the twin towers western building, yet, then said that if Canadians did that in “Abu Omar’s” country……etc. Don’t you see contradictions here? If you want to bundle Westerners together, do that consistently. Secondly, Abu Omar’s country is Canada, or at least he was made beleive so, or legally told so. Thirdly, Westerners are committing lots of atrocities over in brown skin land, which coincidentaly matches the color of AbuOmra’s skin. Yet, the Westerners in other brown skin land, don’t face any discrimination.
Ocean Lady, if you were made to beleive that Canadians are in brown skin land to free them from oppression and to give them better life, and all that, think again. Canadians are overseas to promote international trade and to protect Canada’s economic interest overseas, so, the atrocities committed for that reason are crimes. If we in Canada do not see it as so, be sure that some people do. Be sure that some people out there, who had a relative killed or a loved one killed, in their home country that they inhibited for hundreds if not thousands of years, will not easily forgive.
You wanna say Westerners, well, the west colonized, divided and killed “millions” of Arabs, and called the resisters “terrorists”. In Algeria alone, one million people were killed.
This is not the issue here, but Ocean Lady, you started this, so, you’d better know that facts and think again. There is no reason whatsoever to be racist or prejeduce.
And by the way, I agree with you completely when you explained how people jumped on your back about the clothes thing- only because they’re so conditoned to assume that by referring to the best, you were refferring to the most exclusive and the most expensive.
Thank you Z. I never said that only whites are racist. I know that is far far from the truth.
Hey Abu, sorry. I misunderstood. Good luck to you 🙂
There is a difference between prejudice and racism. The difference is power.
Everyone is prejudiced, we tend to lump like groups/ppl into the same categories. Its how our brains find a social footing in the world.
Racism implies one has the power to act out on that prejudice. As the power holders in Canada, white caucasians need to be more cognizant of how their words and actions can subvert others. In truth, there is nothing a visible minority like arabs can do to you, they are simply powerless. It maybe a small indiscretion to you, but it hits the powerless like a sledgehammer. Its difficult for many caucasions to understand or accept this because they’ve never had to endure any sort of vilification because of color. Be aware and be smarter.
Reverse racism.. chuckle..
I agree Veeny- that whites are the power holders of Canada; America and Britian… With all the power these predominantely white-ruled countries have, their reach extends much further to the rest of the world and so the impact of their racism on others can be far worse.
I can see how hard it would be a new-to-the-country, non-white who is from a country that is under intense suspicion (say, Pakistan) to be going through all the usual stress of relocating somewhere completely foreign, to endure this kind of suspicion and bias against you. I can’t really imagine how hard it would be. Heck, I’m white and moved to a foreign country (also white) where I never thought I’d be considered foreign, and yet I really was- on a mild scale- I did feel foreign, and lonely, and frustrated by the way things were done over there, off and on. So I really feel for people like the Op, who probably has it the hardest right now given the west’s perception of middle easterners.
of course whites control these countries we built them.just like in some other countries ‘brown’ people built are controled by ‘brown’people.what is clearly shown is who did a better job at country building.we did, the west.
what worries me is that most other countries are shit holes.built by the culture of ‘brown’ people.so they move here with their ways of doing things ‘sharia law’ for example and try to implement it here.and us being so accomadating will start to allow these ideas.little things first, such as our ceremonial rcmp guard having to change their uniforms, sihks wearing ceremonial daggers to school.etc.
the quebec town of Herouxville had it right when they stated (this is summarized)
‘Herouxville Citizens right to protect their way of life, language and Culture in the reasonable Accomodation to Immigrants’
unfortunatly to many ‘whites’ are willing to throw all that our ancestors accommplished so they can seem as if they are so informed.loving and overly friendly.bullshit such people are not acting real.
I wonder how often SIXXES lays awake at night wondering why no woman will go near him.
Da hell? Are you just TRYING to be inflammatory?
had no problem with your mother lol
-.-‘
I said ‘woman’, not ‘.jpeg’.
lol you do have a good sense of humour fats
One of the finest!
Perhaps, Z, some of us are just sick and tired of being lumped in with the “racist” title by people who obviously have a chip on their shoulder when we go out of our way to accommodate and respect those of other cultures in our daily lives.
Perhaps english isn’t OP’s first language (i’m postulating here, not saying that just because he’s arabian because I know that’s the first thing that you OR OP’s going to jump on) and he wasn’t able to articulate his point the way we could understand it, however, it read that we (white people/westerners) were all racist because we looked at his crying kid and that he obviously loves his kid more than everyone else does because he puts them in the best clothes. Forgive me if that wasn’t your point (and, start the back peddling here, OP), but it really just sounded like you should brush that chip from off your shoulder. If I heard a kid screaming in the mall crying its face off I’d probably look over too. And i’d probably give the mother/father/caregiver a look of sympathy because I know a crying baby/toddler/child is no picnic to deal with. Maybe that’s why people were looking over with you with looks on their faces — they were sympathizing.
Also, I live in a predominantly Arab immigrant community and I’ve never had the notion of arab families beating their kids. I’ve also commented recently that kids of arab parents are probably the most well behaved teenagers in HRM.
Not all of us have preconceived notions, OP, about immigrant families.
