I don’t know who started this trend, but now whenever there is a somewhat controversial public incident, the media slaps the word “gate” onto the end of it. I just read an article about the suspension of Blue Jays player Bret Laurie for throwing his helmet and hitting a ref, and the reporter referred to it as “helmetgate”. Are you kidding me?? I’ve seen “penisgate” for various celebrities that were caught in full frontal images, “spygate” for an NFL scandal, “weinergate” for the Anthoney Weiner underwear photos, and on and on. Stop it!! Helmetgate?? Fuck! —Nategate

  1. i smell something brewing here o.p., i think we should call the cops. after all, you wouldn’t want a bitergate now, woodja.

  2. “I don’t know who started this trend.” Here is a little rap for you:

    You need to edu-gate
    so look up Watergate
    on a search engine, Nate

    Just do it—don’t wait!

  3. You’re right, OB – it’s the media being lazy and sensationalistic. It irks me most when the story is not nearly as important as the original “-gate” was at the time – a break-in at a major political party’s headquarters that was ordered by a sitting POTUS, and all the efforts to cover it up.

  4. Quick show of hands. Who here is eternally grateful that as part of his executor duties, Mayor Tapeworm didn’t have to dispose of that lady’s gate?

  5. Thanks Xenophilia. I know what Watergate is, but I don’t think half of the people adding “gate” to everything do!

  6. First I’ve heard of ‘gate’ being added to everything…although I am old enough to remember Watergate !

What I really hate OB is how everything these days is W A R
We have to remain steadfast & true to our
The WAR on drugs, & The WAR on TERROR is ongoing… there’s the old War on Poverty you don’t hear about much since 2008 ~;p

It seems the politicians especially the yanks just can’t help wanting more & more Wars !

    Maybe there can be a WARGATE O.B. ! ! !

Then we could both be even more pissed .

  7. I always thought Dick had class – went out in style. I am not a crook. Unlike someone close to home, concertGATE, harbour clean upGATE, probate willGATE, forniGATE

  8. yes guys, the WAR. let us not forget the most devestating war of all, the war of sexes. it is a truly one sided deal, and the male, never, ever wins.

  9. It’s just a suffix to describe a specific scandal. It comes from the Hotel Watergate in Washington D.C. where back in 1972, burglars ultimately linked to the Republican incumbents, broke into the Democratic headquarters looking for… something. The ensuing scandal lead to the downfall of the Nixon presidency and was termed “watergate”. Since then the “gate” part has been used to denote a scandal. Next question?

  10. I think that the burglars were looking for a file they thought the Democrats had with the name of the guy on the grassy knoll.

  11. I gotta say…
while it’s lazy reporting, it sure proves the point that makes what it’s about easy to remember.
My sense of humor may be off a bit but I often find it hilarious…
    weinergate… *snicker*

  12. I don’t remember if I ever posted this here.
It is my absolute favorite rant on christmas, & those who wish it changed…& many of you know i am not a gift giving xmas type, the commercialism IMO takes away from what is really important, family & good friends…anyway I degress, here’s the link

  13. troodon formosus, I am well aware of what Watergate is, I am questioning the validity/need to slap “gate” onto everything that even resembles a scandal. Your knowledge is impressive but not needed.

  14. My knowledge is as redundant as the “gate” suffix, is that what you’re saying! lol
