I was driving behind you on quinpool yesterday and noticed the Rainbow Flag above the license plate. No big deal. Show yer out and proud and all that, its cool.
But then I noticed a sticker above it on the trunk: “STOP BREEDING”.
Really? Not quite sure how to take that one.

I totally agree with “STOP BREEDING.” Some people should not have children. Where can I get a sticker that says that?

I think it’s ridiculous personally. The problem isn’t that there are too many people. One could, in fact, argue that North America is underpopulated in comparison to available resources. The problem is that people tend to be greedy and stupid when using these resources.
The problem with changing people’s attitudes towards greediness and stupidity is that greedy and stupid people tend to breed a lot more greedy and stupid people while intelligent people limit themselves to 1 or 2 or sometimes no children. Intelligence is something like 50% genetics (according to Freakonomics) and the rest is a make up of environment and nuturing and opprotunity and all that.
My rambling point is: If you’re intelligent have children and teach them how to be responsible people. If you’re stupid, go get yourself sterilised for the betterment of humankind!

Doesn’t make sense to me. There’s lots of gay people who “breed” and tons of straight people who never have kids. So why is it only used by gay people at the expense of straight people?
I don’t think it is, fizz. The Childfree movement uses “breeder” frequently in their literature. I don’t want kids at the moment, possibly ever, but those people kind of scare me. Anyone who goes militant about their beliefs needs to be watched carefully.

Maybe I’m wrong…but I’ve only ever heard it from angry straight people who hate kids. With the number of G/L out there trying to adopt, you’d think it wouldnt be them perpetuating the term. Huh.

I’ve heard it from both gay and straight people, used derisively towards people who are absurdly proud of their ability to spawn. I think there’s a very small percentage of them who are actually suggesting that people stop reproducing altogether, more so that it would just be nice if we could cut down on the vapid, overconsuming, self-entitled types and their genetically deficient offspring.

Just because the car had a rainbow sticker does not mean the person who owns the car was gay. Anyone who supports a gay lifestyle can sport a pride sticker. So in all possibility the car owner supports homosexuality, as well as not having children.
While it may seem like North America has an underpopulation problem, we actually use far more of the resources of the world than say the overpopulated countries in Africa. So claiming that we are allowed to have more kids, and they should stop is not a helpful solution.
Of course we’re de-populating, the baby-boomers are slowly dying off (yay!) and now the 5-10 children family are just called Catholic.
I feel that the “breeder” term is just like the “cracker” term for white people. lots of hetero couples dont breed. lots of them dont want to. Also my problem is – gays or all the GLBT community are against discrimination – yet the discriminate against others that are not gay ? Some lesbians and gays are just as bad as homophobes. Most I’ve met are perfectly reasonable, but once in a while you run into a bigot that thinks they are entitled to hate men. Not a big deal, bigots come from all races, genders, and orientations.
I am certainly far from homeophoic and have gay friends. However, as I have told them, I really do not see the point of driving around town with a fucking bumper sticker which announces they are gay. I mean what purpose? I am now going out to buy my “Look at me. I am Hetro” Bumper sticker.
Once again, rainbow stickers are used to show support for people who are open about their gay lifestyle, not to pronounce their sexual preference. I can, without being gay, have a rainbow sticker, just like I can, without being a soldier, have a sticker that says support our troops.

Lets be honest, no one sees a person with a rainbow flag, shirt, button, etc. without assuming that person is gay. Unless its pride week.
But I agree with PAS, the icon is supposed to be used to show support not to proclaim sexual orientation. It’s just that gay people happen to support gay rights, who’d a thought? Of course straight people support gay rights too… but most of them don’t do it by sporting rainbows. Mostly that’s done by ultra-proud moms of gay sons, at a gay rights event, or a pin among hundreds on a “trendy” backpack.
Personally, I don’t see what gay rights has to do with the idea that people should stop having kids. They are two separate ideas, or should be.
No one wants everyone to stop having kids, that’s not what “stop breeding” means, as illogical as that sounds. It usually refers to people who have way too many kids, like the Duggars. In this age and county, there is no reason to have 18 kids that consume resources yada yada.
