To the “gentleman” who felt the need to yell out a racial expletive as he sped past me in his car last Friday afternoon: you did not break my spirit. I am still black and proud. And PS- I am also gay —Black, proud, gay and loving it
This article appears in Jul 8-14, 2010.

Hmmm…I think this should be in the LTWWL section, because it made me happy. Not the racial slur but all the rest. Stay proud 🙂
Thanks for comment and the suggestion!
He was just displaying his ignorance OP. The informed among us know we all belong to the human race, no matter the colour of our outer epidermis. Since the population of the entire planet originated in Africa, the ‘cradle of humanity’, we ALL have African genetics to thank for our existance. No exceptions.
well now o.p., aren’t you just a bundle of it.
Fuck, drive-by yelling annoys me to no end. It’s a cowardly thing to do.
Karma will get’em!! :o)
But seriously… stay proud, people like that ignorant asshole are just so miserable in their own life that they take it out on other people. If anything, I feel a little sorry for his pitiful life. He probably hates his job, and his wife, drinks too much and kicks his dog.
You stay proud – man, I’d love to sock that motherfuckin’ racist with my left tit and send him sailing into the Esso flame in Eastern Passage.
TTFN, I enjoy you.
OP, we aren’t all like this. Despite what Toronto-centric media might claim, Halifax is very accepting of black AND gay people. Hold your head up high man.
Doesn’t Halifax have the third largest pride parade/celebrations in Canada after TO and MTL?
Could be wrong, but I know halifax is known as being pretty accepting of those in the GLBT community.
Fuck I hate the term “pretty accepting of those in the GLBT community”. You either accept us or you don’t. Not bitching at you PK, just annoys me to hell when all that really means is a small percentage has to “accept” us to meet that criteria.
As for Halifax’s black gay community, at least when it comes to guys being out its pretty rare. I only know of two fully out members in Halifax and those guys both hold jobs in the Federal Gov. ranks so they are much better protected than lets say the gay guy working for a retailer who isn’t working for a pro-gay boss.
But I’ve met many other gay black males in Halifax at more formal social gatherings and most of them need to come out of that closet. Gotta love those ones who will try to make out with you at a get together then tell you not to acknowledge them if you run into them on the street or mall “cause someone might know” that you’re gay and that means getting branded as gay as well. Is the black community mostly accepting of gay black men or is that a huge no-no?
No idea what it’s like for black lesbians tho.
Canada is a very “tolerant” society.
I find that expression oh so annoying. I have no idea why there is a need to “accept” reality, as if we have a choice. You either are at peace with the reality or not, and those who are not suffer more. I am very tired this morning and pretty incoherent, so don’t mind me. 😀 Monday sucks.
That’s the great misconception. Canadians think they are being tolerant when they are ,in fact, being smug, smarmy and sanctimonious. We are the most boringly self-righteous nation this side of Sweden and we make movies that are about as much fun to watch. You would not believe the number of educated, upper middle class people I know who would cut out their living tongues before uttering a word like n!gg#r of f@gg*t. Get them going on the topic of the United States, however, and whooo-eee, let the sterotypes fly. And I’m not just talking innocuous old chestnuts like ski-racks on the car in August; I’m talking vile hate rhetoric that would make an Iranian mullah blush. It’s true what they say “Everyone loves the smell of their own wind”
And yes – Mondays do truly suck
At least you guys got SOME sleep last night unlike poor PK who’s got a mad case of the “unemployed” insomnia goin’ on. *sigh*
Anyway, VOR, I totally get what you’re saying. I’m straight (though, I will admit, I do tend to become attracted to a lot of gay men, which is pretty sucky…for me *sigh*) so I’ve never had to deal with really anyone frowning upon or thinking/stating that my sexual orientation or lifestyle is a negative thing so I can’t imagine how frustrating that can be, though, having the guy I’m secretly into (who’s gay) tell me that the thought of hooking up with me is “ew gross” kinda blows…but I digress.
I guess what I was trying to get across is that Halifax has a rep of being very intolerant, and in reality, I think it’s somewhat easier to be out in halifax than reputation would claim. Though, it’s probably easier (especially in the way of meeting a significant other) to be out in a larger city like Toronto, though, I really have no experience in this so I really have no clue if this is correct or not.
Sorry to hear that PK. If it weren’t for that whole food, shelter and clothing durka, durka I’d have to say that work is vastly over-rated. Hope you find something soon, if only for the novelty of “Jebus, my job sucks” insomnia. A change is as good as a rest. >: )
Sonovabitchova and I love your avatar, but then kitteh avs are always winners with us.
Thanks, Ivan. I appreciate the sentiment! Never thought I’d be shacking up with the parental units at 28…I told them to just pack my shit and change the locks i I’m still there in another 18 months when I turn the big 3-0. 😛
some parental units are right some nice pk. my spidey senses tingle when people say “i don’t mind the (fill in the blank) if they weren’t so (fill in the blank). i don’t mind the bigots if they weren’t sofa king we tarded. RAWK
Black and gay. That narrows down dramatically who you are in HRM.
You can blame Egoyan for the boring movies, Ivan. Thanks to him, most Canadian films have to be art-house (read: gay cowboys eating pudding) or have to be brutally depressing.
It’s a shame that this sort of behaviour goes on. There will always be bigots in this world, and it’s something you need to accept, unfortunately. But that sure as hell doesn’t mean you have to like it.
Aw hell Doc, you can go back to the 1970’s when, if you had a valid CDN passport, all you had to do was shit in a Super 8 movie camera to be guaranteed Canada Council monies.. “Goin’ Down The Road” is a lot more entertaining as a parody (ala SCTV) than as something to actually sit through. Although there’s probably a master’s thesis floating around out there about how it was the primordial genesis of Trailer Park Boys. I dunno.
And while the pace of change in Halifax may be glacial – it does occur. This is a far different city than when I came here in 1979.
<3 Gay Pride! Can't wait til the parade this year!
I wonder if we’re going to have to deal with another bible-thumping rant like we did last year?
they city has changed in the 17 years i have been here, or maybe i am just getting older. my greyhound friends are in the parade and they don’t have to wear paper bags on their heads. snort
We’ll be seeing burkas now PG, and norty Mullahs reading from “The Holy Queeran” Hope that doesn’t drive the liability insurance premiums into low-Earth orbit.
i don’t take the hound he is too old and i hate crowds of THOSE people. kiddin^^^are the oscillating be-heading machines helping with the heat
It’s pretty comfy, but with this humidity nothing short of full immersion in liquid oxygen can help. Mmmmm – Absolute Zero – I am so there.
