I put half a blue bag full of recyclables in my private back yard, and the next day they are gone. The recyclables are mine. My yard is private property. I am having to buy more blue bags than I need to, which is an added expense, and can’t be good for the environment. The fact that a stranger is coming into my yard on a regular basis makes me feel uncomfortable. The fact that if I want to save my own recyclables to bring to the bottle depot I have to keep them inside my house is annoying. Collecting recyclables that are tossed out in the trash is a commendable public service. Stealing recyclables from other people’s yards is a crime. —Annoyed in the West End

The booby traps installed pervasively throughout The Captains estate prevent one from worrying about strange bottle collectors tromping around the property at the night.
I rented a house on Chebucto a few years ago. Those fuckers would take the recyclables all the time. They’d even twist the tops off and leave the caps in the corner of my yard. Then I noticed my old car battery was gone, guess they returned it for me….. Then after a couple months even my BBQ tongs, spatula and brush dissapeared. But not the BBQ, which was only a few months old.
God damn you un-fenced West End Yards!!!! God damn you!!!
PS- I miss the cart folk with their bottles and cans clanging. I’m in a province with no deposit and its fucking filthy!!!
Get a security system. Try logitech’s WiLife security – it’s cheap and you can monitor it anywhere you have an internet connection. It works on power over ethernet.
Then put a sign saying “Smile trespasser. You’re on camera.”
Frankly I just leave my bottles out front and i LIKE that people remote them cleanly.. It’s like having recycling service 24/7. But if you wanna return them, film them. Then turn the footage over to the police and make a case about trespassing.
some skanky ass turned up in a car one day while i boyfriend and i were chatting with the neighbour. Those fuckers CAME INTO THE YARD AND TRIED TO REMOVE MY PURSE WHICH WAS ON MY FRONT STEP.
Ok. Dumb to leave my purse on the step. Totally kicked myself for that but come on. Then they tried to make the case that “Well it was just sitting there and we thought it was garbage”
I said “You’re a thief who tried to steal my purse. Don’t let me catch you on this street again.” and i wrote his license plate number down and took pics of him while he blitzed away.
Dartmouth, huh?
Motion triggered water sprinkler?
call the po-po next time and report the prowler/theft.
“911, how may I direct you call?”
“Give me the Police, somebody stole my empty cans!!!”
Right, they’ll send an Officer right away. (That was sarcasm in case you missed it.)
It has always surprised me how little attention philosophers have paid to humor, since it is a more significant process of mind than reason. Reason can only sort out perceptions, but the humor process is involved in changing them. – Edward de Bono
wouldn’t be a crackhead or doper swiping them, too much effort to get them to depot. must have been one of the ones with the carts.
Brace yourself OP, the worst is yet to come:

“I put HALF a blue bag FULL of recyclables”
HALF? FULL?
Just had to point that out.
Good call m_kegg! Using only half the bag is a waste.
They take the time to remove the caps? At least they’re consciencious thieves.
I’ve accepted it as a fact of life of living in this city.
I think m_kegg was pointing out the bad grammar more than anything but yeah. Waster!
It was RECYCLABLES for christ’s sake, not your child!
I did that guy’s income tax this year. Disabled due to AIDS, he received $9,472 from Community Services; approximately what you spent on on your beer…
