In three weeks from today, my precious little girl will start school. She is beyond excited, and ready for school. I am stressed out and frustrated. Not for the fact that she is starting school – I am very excited for her. I am stressed out & frustrated due to the fact that I have to drop about $300 for school supplies, clothing, 2 pairs of sneakers, admin fees, and this is all before I try to wrap my brain around buying ONLY nut-free snack foods and lunchs made with NO PEANUTS. Here’s my beef, lunch food is expensive, regardless, but now I have to go out and buy only nut-free snacks (and non-name brand snacks don’t have the little ‘nut free’ symbol on them) and have to figure out lunches. She can’t take her fav, PB&J, and who wants to be the kid eating tuna in the cafeteria? Which means lunch meats… lunch meats are fucking expensive. There’s no microwave, so there goes soups, etc. So, to recap, supplies, clothing, multiple pairs of shoes, and name brand snacks to accommodate the nut-free policy. Did I mention that I am doing all of this off of only one income????? SO – HEY DEAD BEAT FUCKING DAD, TIME TO PAY SOME FUCKING CHILD SUPPORT YOU ASSHOLE. —Single Mom Doing Her Best

You can buy this stuff called peabutter now in the health food section of your local grocery store. It’s a peanut free option for your childs fav pg&j. I’m a single mom too so I understand how expensive these things can be but you should have no problems finding peanut free options. My son is a big fan of chicken finger wraps. You can prepare them the night before and they are find cold. A little mayo, some cheese and lettuce and you’re good to go! I’m sure your daughter will love them.
Oops that should read, pb&j!! and the peabutter is by NoNuts 🙂
almond butter is expensive but if you’ve got a friend with a costco membership they have big bottles at a good price….you just have to stir it well before first use.
otherwise – there’s hummus (again large tub at costco for the price of a tiny one at the grocery store) on a pita with veggies.
snacks are a problem for all of us. I’m not supposed to have peanuts but don’t have to resort to ‘peanut free’ products thankfully.
There are great deals to be had at costco – large boxes of treats available for a good price.
best of luck with the snacks (and the deadbeat dad – jerk)
You should see if NoNuts does castrations of shitty dead beat Dads…
Pick your mating partners well. This should serve good notice to those thinking of starting a family to make things better in your relationship.

There is always veggies-&-dip, fruit, cold piza. Tuna is not the only substitute for peanuts, you know.
One thing I don’t get (not just you OB, and not just food), why ‘must’ a child in primary have ‘brand name’ items?
Food allergies suck. As someone with allergies they’re no fun. That said, I have never told people to not eat what they want around me. I just ask that they warn me if my off limits foods are nearby so at least I’m aware. I understand with children it may not be so easy.
Try soy nut butter. I know some people are anit-soy, but it is at least an option to consider. There is a soybutter that has honey in it too which is good. I LOVE cashew butter, though it is expensive.
-ham and cheese wrapped up in tortillas
-bagles with cream cheese spread
-muffins
-yogurt cups
-pita chips
-fruit cups
-cheese and crackers
There have been a few kids that have gotten in trouble for having PB at school when in fact it was another nut butter. If you send your kid to school with something that resembles PB it may be wise to alert their teacher.
School is expensive. Between supplies, lunches/snacks, clothes etc etc it gets costly quickly. Time to chase Mr. Deadbeat and have him pony up for some of these expenses.
I’m sorry OP but the nut free is a good rule, my friends kid is deathly allergic to peanuts, just the smell sends him to the hospital, so if he dies at school because some parent couldn’t respect that rule I shall personally blame you. This bitch is just stupid!
DOUBLEDOWN123 -> I don’t believe that the OP had stated that she was going to send her child to school with nut products and I think that you’re comment is completly out of line. You shall personally blame her if your friends child dies at school?? Give me a break, that’s pretty extreme.
Why the hell do people have children? Just get cats FFS.
There are a *lot* of inexpensive nut-free snack options for kids. Veggies and dip comes to mind.
Have some more kids.
sweetie, you should have thought of all this shit 2 years ago, and planned better. you knew your child would be going to school anytime after the 5th. birthday, so why wait til last minute to get all crazy.
fuck, people just break me up sometimes. my kids were ready when they were 3 years old. had school paper and glue, pencils and all that shit. it’s good that you want your child to be healthy, but they also have to build up their immune system too. you can’t expect them to not get a cold, or shit like that either.just let ma nature run her course, and deal with the issues, only when they actually arrive.
kids trade their lunches sometimes too, just make sure to give them a big breakfast
Buy a roast, cook it, slice it up, use in sandwiches. You knew this day was coming, it’s no surprise. BTW you don’t have to buy designer sneakers and clothes for your kid.
As an old fucker I have to ask, when and where did all these allergies and ADHD, autism etc come from?
Porkpie, 90% of kids get allergies to peanuts when they are given them at too young an age. Big Pharma has been blaming mothers who smoke for ADHD, but I have my doubts.
OP mom, Value Village has great deals for clothes. I don’t have kids (that I know of 😉 but I just read that the best time to buy binders and backpacks is at the end of September. You could research best time to buy other stuff as well.
Popcorn is great in kids lunches. Also think ‘finger food.’ Kids like to nibble. You could get a child size bento box and fill it with finger sandwiches, carrot sticks, a few grapes, etc. cut cheese slices with a cookie cutter into fun shapes…you can do this.
i avoided giving the boy peanuts, shellfish products til he was older. i also tried to avoid giving him antibiotics and made sure he ate lots of dirt^^he has no allergies and other than having strange parents, he is fine
“cut cheese slices with a cookie cutter into fun shapes” I want my mom to do this for me now!
Um also she used to make me green mashed potatoes for lunch, with just a drop of food colouring. You wouldn’t believe how excited I was to eat it, lol.
YEARS AGO – The school tried to tell me that I needed 2 pair of sneakers one for gym and the other pair for outside. My mother told me to tell the school that she just out fitted 3 kids for school and if having 2 pairs of sneakers if that important then they can goddamb well go out and buy me a pair cause she has no more money….Needless to say I never heard a word about having to have 2 pairs of sneakers again. haha
Gotta put them in their place. It’s costly
they give you this big list of shite, most of it the kid doesn’t need. it’s not like they won’t teach them if they didn’t bring two boxes of kleenex
The stuff on the supply list like “2 boxes of kleenex” and “a package of white paper” and “a package of construction paper” are usually taken away by the teacher and used communally. If you can’t afford it, just don’t buy it. It’s not like there won’t be piles of that shit brought in by other kids. You might want to send a heads up to the teacher, though. Some of them can be pretty cunty to the kids and will shame them in front of the class. 🙁
And in my elementary, the list was decided on by the three teachers who taught each grade and half the shit on my list I’d never use because another teacher wanted it for their class and my teacher had no use for it.
See, it would be REALLY helpful if teachers just had a system where the parents write a cheque and the supplies are provided. Teachers can get discounts and bulk rates and every kid has the same shit — so you don’t get one kid with crappy no-name stuff, and another with brand name things. Levels the playing field.
Though, I’m also in favour of uniforms in the public school system. Nothing elaborate, but it would save a lot of hassle for parents, and you wouldn’t get kids being made fun of because they don’t have the “right” brand of clothing. School shouldn’t be about that shit — it should be about learning and learning how to socially interact with your peers. All you’d have to do is get two pairs of pants or skirts, and a couple of shirts/sweaters. There. simple. And if done right, not that expensive (old navy, for example has a school uniform shop that’s super reasonable).
PS: the two pairs of sneakers thing is a load of shit. Most kids wear winter boots and rain boots in shitty weather, do they not? I don’t see what harm a pair of outdoor sneakers in fine weather would do to the inside floors of the school. And if they’re that bad, get the kid to wipe them off.
My mom bought me two pairs of sneakers for the first two years then was all “fuck that” and that was that.
i love your mum pk
Some schools are doing that PK. I know here in small town NB the elementary school now has a program where you write a cheque for like $50 and that’s that. It kind of seems like a lot at once, but man, it simplifies things. Parents can opt out and still do the shopping if they want.
Female school uniforms also have the added benefit of looking very nice. 😛 http://www.instant-ramen.net/wp-content/up…
You sick bastard! 😛
lol I’m just saying that high school would have been slightly more bearable with pretty girls in uniforms. 😛
Meh, our tax dollars already pay for your spawn to get a mediocre education.. you want us to pay for lunches and school supplies too? I can hardly afford my own lunches.
Most kid’s snacks these days are peanut free anyway.. or maybe you could give your child a piece of fruit. It’s cheap and peanut free.
A friend of mine mentioned that after confirming that there are no peanut allergies in the workplace, their HR department lifted the ban on peanut butter.
OP, when you and your man (wherever he may now be, or with whoever) should have thought about the costs of raising a kid before the 5 minutes of fame you both had in bed. Now your realize it costs money, and with your kid starting school, the amount is only going up, way up for the next 12+ years. As for the peanut-ban, fuck that. If a kid can’t tolerate a little peanut butter, the school should be removing that kid to a closet to eat in seclusion. Kids should not be forbidden from eating a P&B sandwich because some defective kid can’t handle it.
Just wait until you have them in school age daycare, and they take away the apple you gave your kid because they are “contraband” food products, lol… It gets funner and funner.
Yo. Your special snowflake isn’t going to drop dead from not having PB&J for a whole day. Promise. And PC products have the nut-free symbol on them, so there goes that rant too.
It’s odd that it seems that the folks who are the most vocal about not “catering” to the needs of others seem to be the most entitled themselves.
If you’re having a hard time shelling out cash for name-brand snacks, here’s a thought: bake your own. Not terrifically hard (and hardly an original thought either).
At the end of the day, a kid’s right to public school trumps your hurt feefees over the peanut ban. Grow a pair.
