I found a cat off of Wyse Road that must have been hit by a car or something. It was all bloody, and couldn’t walk. It was dragging itself along the road. It was so sad because he was meowing and wanting me to pat him and help him, and I didn’t want to get blood on me. I went to a nearby friend’s apartment bawling my eyes out and called one of the local animal shelters. They did ABSOLUTELY nothing! I made about 5 calls to other animal rescue places and even called the police. Nobody did a thing. My mom went to that same shelter to adopt a cat and they were charging $120! This is supposed to be a charity. They are supposed to be finding homes for these animals, not selling them to make a profit. Online classifieds are FULL of free pets that people can’t keep, for whatever reason. When nobody takes them, they have to be euthanized because the shelter is full. They claim they cannot accept any more animals. Well when you are selling CATS at over a hundred bucks a pop, what the FUCK do you expect?! If you were really that hard up for money, you wouldn’t be advertising on TV, which ain’t cheap. Those sad little kitten and puppy dog eyes on the commercials = Big Money! I am a “cat mother” of 3, and I have adopted a cat from that shelter, and the money they charge is NOT profit. It is to help defray the cost (which would normally be HUNDREDS of $$$) of having the pet spayed/neutered, and needled. Plus you get a voucher for one free checkup from a participating vet. These things are NOT free and NOT cheap. Investigate a little before you start shooting your mouth off, and for the love of all that is holy, stop and help a suffering creature instead of leaving it there to suffer and die because you don’t want to get dirty! FECK!

As someone who actually volunteers most of her free time to animal rescue, $120 is a fucking STEAL compared to what it atually costs to care for most animals. For future refernce, now that the SPCA no longer has the animal control contract for the city, it’s Homeward Bound City Pound you contact about injured and roaming animals.

I took him to the vet like responsible pet owners are supposed to, to have him checked out and to get his shots. It was more than $200. Then the neuter was over $300. So, paying $120 to a shelter who will neuter/spay the pet for you, give it an overall check up, give it its first round of shots is absolutely nothing.

I am absolutely with the previous posters that you clearly have no idea what it takes to rescue an animal, particularly so if you’re able to sleep at night knowing you left that animal to die. The people running those shelters/rescues do not turn a profit! Not only are the adoption fees a savings over many “free” pets, they are important for instilling in people the notion that pets are a commitment, not disposable items to be left bleeding on the side of the road.

My cousin was in the same position. He gathered the cat up, took it to his car, and drove to the vet. He didn’t get it put down though. Something hit him on the drive, and he decided to ask the Vet to save the cat.
“WTF?!”, said the vet.
“You heard me!”, he replied.
$3000 later he has the most bad ass cat in town. It’s got half its teeth, one eye, and almost 4 legs. It’s not in pain anymore, and you can tell it’s incredibly grateful towards my cousin. One of the coolest cats to ever survive a hit and run.

i found myself in a simular situation a long time ago. same response as you got. well i blew a fucking gasket, and took the poor fucking dog, to the nearest vet hosp. just walked in, told what happened and walked right the fuck back out. a friend had a bunch of cats hanging around her place last year, she moved and felt sorry for them. being in a no pet building, she called all the shelters, and was told they could help her. she bought a big cage off kijiji, and put them all in, and dropped them off on the doorstep of the last place she called, that gave her a very hard time, by the way.

I hit a deer once while driving late at night. There’s no vet within a reasonable distance, and a 250lb deer doesn’t fit well into or onto a hatchback. Needless to say I had to do the job of the vet on the side of the road. ruined all my clothes but at least didn’t leave the thing suffering on the roadside.
Before bashing a charitable organization you need to educate yourself on them. The reason they charge $120 is to keep their facility up and running! You are receiving an animal that has been fixed, flea treated, shots & dewormed, not only that but socialized by VOLUNTEER animal lovers. How do you expect them to pay power bills etc? Like someone already stated: this place charges $120 because they have to pay for the vet services for the animals and they can’t just pull money out of their arses for food, medical care, care, etc… for the animals in the shelter.
When you get an animal from there, it includes the cost of neutering or spaying and their needles (two sets, usually) plus de-worming and appropriate check ups. When I had my cats spayed and neutered it cost $250 for Molly and $150 for Oscar. That was on top of the $320 I paid for check ups and needles before hand.

Part of me feels this bitch fake because the OP claims the cat wanted OP to pet it and I’m just thinking that an injured/hurt animal is a lot more terrified than a non-injured animal, plus it would still be shaken up from the trauma of being hurt making it even more afraid of people and other objects. and i did call that vet on wyse and they told me to call this “wonderful charity” in question. i was bawlling on the phone telling them about the cat all bloody and hurt. And when i went back outside after calling around everywhere, the cat was gone. I know it was noone i called that day saved her, because everyone on the phone said no they couldn’t do anything about it. they all just passed the buck.
the SPCA back home (Ontario) charges 170$ for Cat and Kittens but comes with the following:

When I was 12 I saw a kitten get hit by a car and the person just drove off. The cat looked like it was going to try to run out in the street again so I picked the cat up and held it close to me until it’s owners finally came home. I was 12 years old and I knew to do something more then what you did, and guess what…I had to continue the walk to my aunts house after that covered in blood while people looked at me funny. At least that fucking cat had someone with it when it died.
Fast forward to when I was about the same age you are now, another hit cat on the side of the road. I was low income, no car, single mom walking home from work. The cat was already dead by the time I saw it and I made the same calls you did but not until after I grabbed my 7 year old and we went to EVERY house on that street trying to find the owners.
Saw a dog get hit once too, hard. He survived and ran into the woods. I spent hours searching for the poor thing after making the call on my cell phone.

The SPCA also makes pet adopters go through a rigorous screening process to make sure the animals they are sending out are going to good homes that are financially stable and responsible. Do you know how many idiots get kittens and puppies because they are just “so cute!” and then abandon them when they move, have kids, get too big, etc. etc. If you can’t afford $150 for an animal, you can’t afford an animal period.

That’s right, tresorla. I adopted my cat just after I moved here (I already had two), and they even called my former vet to make sure that I was a good cat mom. They also called my building manager. It’s a very rigorous process, and that’s what makes me have such faith in them. I would adopt from them again in a heartbeat.
3 years ago someone hit my cat (who I’d adopted from the SPCA). I’ve heard that after she was hit, people got out of their car and looked for her. They wanted to help her. My father found her by the side of the road hours later. She’d been paralyzed, and we had her euthanized. It broke my heart, but at least I know what happened to her.

To get a “free” kitten and provide it with all of it’s shots and to have it spayed or neutered costs $200, easily. To get a cat from the SPCA for $120 is a bargain. The $120 covers some of the costs for feeding and taking care of the animal, as well as providing medical care for it, but it also ensures that only people who are serious about owning a pet get one!

It costs A LOT to care for an animal properly — from feeding them proper food (cat chow and no name cat food is shit and does more harm than good), to taking them to the vet for shots and check ups, to dealing with unexpected illnesses/injuries, etc… the animal might suffer from.
I didn’t think my cat would develop chronic ulcers on her mouth, but she did around age 3, and as such she has to go get shots every two months. That costs money. On top of that, she gets blood work done every six months to make sure the shots aren’t harming her organs. That costs a lot more money. She also gets her immunizations and a check up once a year.
I also have a male cat who gets check ups every year along with his shots. That costs money.
And since the female cat has IBS, she has to be on a special diet. I buy her medi-cal gastro, which costs $31 + taxes every week and a half. Plus I feed my male cat urinary formula wet food. He goes through three cans a week and each can is around $2.
Add up all those costs and it’s not cheap to be a cat owner. If you can’t afford to take proper care of an animal, you have no right to own one. And if you can’t shell out $120 to adopt one (that’s fully neutered/spayed, immunized, etc…), than you obviously are in no financial position to be a pet owner.
