I retired back in April. I still like to go downtown; where I have worked for 34 plus years. Whenever I run into a former co-worker; I get asked, “What are you doing downtown?” Well, I live in Fairview for one thing and we all know what a cultural gem that is. Let’s see…I like coffee shops, the new library, the antique store, the art store, etc. I know old habits and all that…On a bright note; I am going to be volunteering soon so as not to disrupt the balance of downtown. —old bitcher

What a ridiculous question. Of course people like to go downtown!
Angry old man. Relax.
I take it as people just trying to make conversation. Otherwise, they would just nod and keep moving.
Same goes for the “where are you from” question that many people find so inexplicably offensive. I’m caucasian and have no recognizable accent but I have been asked where I grew up many times. It’s just a way of getting to know someone.
I find this whole trend of accusing people of committing “micro-aggressions” is far more aggressive than the actual so-called aggressions. It’s based on looking for malicious intent in every interaction.
There’s a class of people who think they occupy the high moral ground and are looking for every opportunity to tell the rest of us how to think and act. I fear that our universities have become a bastion of totalitarian mind control. So much for independent thinking.
Now I keep hearing DOWNTOWN, by Neil Young in my head…
Seriously, I make conversation many times, regretting it, and not even wanting to do it in the first place but do it out of social convention. Believe me, I’d rather NOT engage you in conversation and could give a fuck why someone is where they are. Names, Cranky, duh.
My cousin worked downtown for 30 years before he retired. You couldn’t get him downtown with a crowbar after that. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Halifax has a downtown? Is that the area with all the empty storefronts and abandoned buildings?
exactly nukka.

You do you, OB: if downtown does it for you more than the pastoral sublime utopia that is Fairview, I say go for it. 8)
