So I decided to take a little time and research this whole “Democracy 250” thing, until I came across the story on how it started, through this link:
http://democracy250.ca/pages/The-Story.aspx
You can read the full story there but there are a couple of statements that caught my attention.
“On October 2, 1758, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly met for the first time in a modest wooden building at the corner of Argyle and Buckingham streets in Halifax. It was a modest beginning with the majority of citizens denied the vote. But it was an important beginning nonetheless. It was the first elected assembly of its kind in what is now Canada.”
“As the birth place of parliamentary democracy, as well as the birthplace of freedom of the press and responsible government in our country, Nova Scotia’s pioneering role in shaping our nation’s democratic institutions has helped secure the rights and freedoms Canadians today embrace. “
Wow, so the first statement completely negates the second one. How can you call it democracy if you denied the citizens their right to vote? How can it be called an elected political body if they put themselves in power? How come whenever we vote nothing changes about our government, in fact it gets worse?
That’s what democracy is all about, a form of dictatorship.

Democracy 250 is a big ole load of buzzard shit meant to employ two ex-Premiers at a cost of over $9 million dollars. Taxpayers should be charging up the steps of Province House with torches and pitchforks, ready to roast those self-serving windbags. While MacLennan and Hamm party it up in style in London, we have to foot the fucking bill and endure rising energy costs and all its implications. They were arseholes running this province in 1758 and the proud tradition continues today. This is a goddamn travesity that favours a select few. And what about getting rid of the Lieutenant Governor while we’re at it? I heard she wipes her ass with hundred dollar bills.
I think one of these days Nova Scotia is going to have a French Revolution of its own. The bitter (and I think somewhat patty and misinformed) resentment of anyone wealthy and / or powerful is just too prevalent to not result in some sort of crisis.I think the fact that power lands in the hands of a select few is just human nature because most of us are just too lazy and complacent to truly participate. And then we suddenly realize where out sloth has led us and we have hissy fits at the people who only did what anyone with half a brain would do – take the power that was so casually handed to them.(It’s a bit like the previous bitch about oil revenues – why are we so mad at the feds? We gave the shit up in our ignorance and complacence; it wasn’t their fault…it was ours.)For the record, I don’t think it’s RIGHT, I just think it’s same-ole same-ole predictable. Almost laughably so.
Personally, I want government accountability. If they can wring our dollars out for random whims, we should be able to see what and how they spend OUR money. That’s my idea of democracy.
