Thank you for your kind thoughts. Yes, I suppose it is the shortest term of exile since the days of Life Sucks but – and this is important – I have always felt it was Bitch rather than me who was in exile. Let me explain.

I took issue not with you but with your Macleans attachment “Female teachers: The offenders no one suspects” (“Practically All Universities,” 12/27, 7:52AM) which demanded the same treatment as given to male teacher sex offenders. I maintained that the cases were quite distinct, that the motivation female teachers was inspired by a misplaced “pedagogical love” for their students and not simply a carnal lust for sex with their students. Indeed, I broadened my position, on the basis of my first-hand knowledge of teachers of both sexes, and claimed that it was more a matter of such misplaced pedagogical love for both male and female teachers which must be sharply distuinguished from that of rapists generally. I pointed out that the greatest danger all teachers faced was not so much lusting after their students of either sex so much as becoming “childish,” i.e., lacking foresight over their actions. It was such childishness, in my view, that led to those regrettable incidents.

Of course, we do not have the actual comment here to support my claim since it was deleted by the Mod. I found this ironic since the Mod, I suppose, is female and would have felt some sympathy for my views. But this was not the case. Perhaps she misunderstood my point but I felt I could not continue under what I took to be very high-handed treatment. (Maybe this comment won’t survive either.)

However, in the fullness of time – six days to be exact – I felt I should cut her some slack. So here I am, labouring away oce more on the stoney soil of Bitch. Will my efforts be rewarded? Will they be appreciated? No one can say. We must just hope for the best.
