Way to go, Halifax. It was several hours into the SNOWSTORM on Wednesday night, and the streets hadn’t even been plowed or salted. Thanks to this excellent damage control, the very kind man who drove my friends and I home couldn’t stop his van going down Gottingen near the police station, and had to slam into the curb to stop us from sliding straight into a busy intersection. Now his van is damaged and we’re lucky to be alive. Get your act together.

why in the HOLY HELL would you take that hill there? every winter I see people spinning to get up and sliding all the way down that fucking deathtrap. there’s plenty ways around it without such a slope… use your head douche.
If you have proper snow tires and know how to fucking drive in snow, there’s no excuse to have to slam into a curb to make a stop.
And BRoc for the win
I wish HRM salted the sidewalks.
The sidewalks in Clayton Park are always a mess… HRM is way too slow at clearing them and salting them.
common fucking sense says that if it snowing and doing shit that hard, you stay the fuck where you are.but ohno, this dickheaded asshole would rather e out risking his and other fucking people’s lives.too bad i would not have been close to you.do i hear sirens in the future for you?
I’ve lived in Clayton Park and lived in Dartmouth/Eastern Passage, went home home to the Passage Wednesday around 10:00pm (only a couple hours into the storm) and the main roads were bare and most of the side streets on the way in were plowed too, and my sidewalk was done a few hours later. You want faster plowing ? Put up some money, cuz snow removal ain’t f*cking cheap. Snow plowed in half the time time will cost twice as much, any idiot can do that math. Pretty smart though, finding one of the steepest streets in the city during a snow storm and going down it. Good job!
The place I work, a data entry centre, somehow managed to get themselves onto the “essential services” list. That means we’re required to show up for work regardless of snowstorm or hurricane. All we do is process data in images scanned in another part of the country. I was disgusted when I heard this.
Perhaps the people in this bitch were in a similiar situation that required them to be out and about? Also, that snowstorm on Thursday was fairly freakish. It was clear when I arrived at work in the late morning but a blizzard when I left in the earling evening.
snow removal is only half the battle, if the stupid cocksuckers behind the wheel of an automobile that isn’t prepared for winter conditions, and in their own state of mind arent prepared for winter driving, its leads to a whole shitload of problems for everyone. slow the fuck down, give longer following distances, dont jerk the wheel and make sudden moves.
for every fast, aggressive driver, there are two scared, slow and timid drivers who are scared of their own shadows. if one has too, plan your route so you can take a shorter way, and avoid any steeper hills.
so before you start shooting your mouth off about the snow removal efforts, take a look at the habits and preparedness of the drivers who use the roads that you complain about.
There is no excuse not to have winter tires on your car in the middle of December. If people slid into shit its their own stupid fault. And you need to drive for the conditions just like Ninja said. Its common sense. Which I’m seeing not a lot of people have. Like parents who send their kids to school with dresses, no pants or snow pants and expect them to be able to go outside for lunch. Idiots.
I was talking to someone about this same problem today at work.
THey mentioned that in Quebec its the law that you have to have winter tires on your car in the winter. ALL SEASONS WILL NOT DO.
My coworker thought that we need the same law here.
I mentioned/thought,no it would take awhile to get the Government people onboard & they’re really way to busy trying to think up new ways to tax us, instead of doing what’s right 7 figuring out how to live wiothin their budget…like all of us have to.
No the best way to get people to put winter tires on their car , is to have the insurance companies issue a declaration that if you are involved in any type of accident in the winter & you don’t have winter tires on your car, they won’t pay a cent & your on the hook for all the damage yourself.
As for the fast aggressive driver comment.
On Wednesday Dec2nd, I had to go to the valley & was driving from the airport & before I made it to Mount Uniake, I seen 17 cars off the road , into the concrete meridian or into the guard rails, while I blew by a long stream of crawlers moving at 30 kms or so, with their flashing yellows on (hows that work for traction again ?)
I was doing 75/80 kms in the outside lane , & was stuck to the road like a velcro strip !
4 wheel drive baby & 4 brand spanking new STUDDED WINTER TIRES…what a fuckin’ difference.
All season tires are great for winter…as long as it’s winter south of Georgia in the USA.
Halifax has lots of hills and it snows here…Get some snow tires dummy.
More – you beat me to it – if the insurance companies said, no snow tires and involded in accident between end of October and first of May, shit out of luck.
I can’t believe the fact that you wold drive in the middle of a snowstorm. Snow tires or not, you’re a dumbass.
OP-
You may want to check into the snow removal standards for HRM before laying blame. http://www.halifax.ca/snow/index.html
You said you were “several hours into the snowstorm”, well, the standard is to be cleared 12 hours AFTER the end of the storm for main roads and bus routes. Jumping the gun a bit, weren’t you? You can’t expect every road that you just happend to be on, to be cleared at the time you were out. A little self-important, aren’t you? Stay home if you are unable to drive in storm situations.
TDF…exactly.
Dr. Fever stay home curled up with your favorite WKRP reruns, & stay warm & safe. IF you actually drove a well maintained vehicle with the proper tires you’d see that it is safer than walking. The only problems in a snow storm are the assholes who are out in it, with summer tires…or the so called all season tires. If you lived in the country, like I do, on a road that isn’t a main or secondary road. You would understand why I have the type of tires I do. We also don’t get salt spread, they use sand, because everyone around here has a dug well. .
The storm on Wednesday evening, I was in the valley & while many were slipping & sliding, or at a complete stand still, I didn’t even have to put my truck in 4 wheel drive. I never slipped at all, not even when proceeding through an intersection I had been stopped, at facing up hill. I cannot say the same for those behind me or spinning their wheels ahead of me that I had to go around.
More, I do drive a maintained vehicle, and I have snow tires. I still prefer not to go out in the middle of a storm, walking or driving. By the way walking, with appropriate gear is far more safer in the city at least. I don’t live out in the boonies, so I can’t really comment on that.
you people know something,it was o p driving,it was a friend that picked them up,we owe you an apology op.but your friend is a dick for being out driving too.
Hmm, Life Sucks, you’re right. Misread that bit. My apologies for that part of my post. However, the bit about the OP expecting snow clearing too soon, still stands.
Living out in the boonies, it really isn’t safe to walk on the roads…we have no sidewalks, & to be honest I don’t want any.
I can walk in the woods & I do. We have side roads & dirt roads that have little traffic, & these are ok to walk on as well. But the secondary roads have high volumes of large trucks, logging, feed, gravel, tankes etc. & there is little room for them & a person on the road. Which is why I made my comment about ‘walking’ being unsafe. Out here, even in the summer it is dangerous to walk the on the side of the road.
Commitments being made mean that as a businessman/ owner I have to be able to keep scheduals, get equipment to jobs on time etc. A little snow can’t stop me…might slow me down to a safe speed, but I won’t quit just because the weather’s shitty. Which is why I have the vehicle I do, it allows me to be as safe as I can, but keep working.
OP may be an idiot for getting in a vehicle in a snow storm, BUT he/she does have a point in how crappy HRM’s winter upkeep is…
For example: I was WALKING to work the other morning to get the bus, there was black ice on the roads, and the sidewalks. This was about 9AM, so there should have been salt on the roads at least
‘winter’ is only starting Dec 21…
all season’s are still allowed though not condoned
Buy the best winter tires you can get – learn to drive in this shit we call winter – and avoid shit like hills if possible ? Simple .OH as for snow clearing – think back to last years really good job they did moving it – ummmmm yea.
