  1. My favourite driver yesterday managed to leave a mound of snow on the roof, did not clear the back window at all, and had a flat rear left tire. Said driver also passed by 2 gas stations with air hoses and was driving like a bat in hibernation, likely due to the all-seasons.

I was amazed yesterday at just how many people were out in the snowstorm. I was only out there because they paid me.

  2. I sat in my living room yesterday and watched some cop pull over several motorists on Alderney just behind the curling club for not clearing off their windows. One car was so bad the cop stood there as buddy cleaned it off then he still gave him the well-deserved ticket 🙂

  3. VoR: I would have paid to see that!! I think that the cops should be handing out tickets left, right and centre to people who don’t clear the snow off their vehicles. It should be considered reckless driving and if it happens twice, they lose their license.

  4. People who don’t properly clear off their cars are scum, absolute fucking scum! They should all be rounded up and sent to work camps on Baffin Island.

I heard that in Singapore, if you don’t properly clear snow off your car, you get caned.

Please note: this is a joke. Maybe not a funny one, but I am far from being serious nonetheless.

  5. maybe the op should. learn, to punctuate. and put a centence together. so that peeple can undrstand what the fuk youer bitching about, and that run-on centences are irritating, because you never know where. they end and that people who no how to drive in winter and see past there nose can pass and arrive safely. Without driving at a crawl.

  6. bullet, most people chave more brains and stay the fuck off roads, and know how to spell somewhat better than you.and here you go,running my uncuation down, jesus h. christ.tell him how it was out there yesterday,p.d.g.

  7. If you’re involved in an accident between the end of October and the first week in May and do not have snow tires, the insurance company should tell you to suck their arse, or whatever the appropriate legal term is for that endevaour.
I firmly believe it will be either an insurance decision or the governments – people generally dislike both the insurance companies and the government so what’s one more kick in the goolies.
Please don’t tell me it will impact the poor, I’d sooner see the poor walk or take the bus than run into me and kill me or worse, break my 24.

  8. I totally agree Basil! Snow tires should be made mandatory! The term “All-Season” is a complete crock of shit! Those types of tires are made from rubber that is almost identical to hockey pucks. When it gets cold out, they turn into the perfect material for sliding on ice. For your insurance to be valid you have to be wearing your seatbelt, sober etc. Proper tires should be part of that.

  9. I have all seasons and I’ve never had a fender-bender in my life. In fact, I still find that most people drive overly cautious in inclement weather. Better safe than sorry is one thing but when you’re holding up a row of more adept drivers, you create a problem. Something akin to Mr. Magoo goes for a drive in the storm. Alas, we are all bound/wary of people you wonder how they ever got their licence. I heard of a driver who put their Winnebago on cruise control then went out back to make a sandwich. Obviously, it wrecked. That person got a licence, somehow slipping through the cracks. I agree that snow tires are superior to all seasons. Of course they are. However, never devalue latent ineptness or stupidity. Put some people in an SUV w/ ABS and studded tires and they become godlike in their own mind. Beyond the reproof of any weather.

  10. In Ottawa, and a few other cities, snow tires are now mandatory, no arguments. I’m not a car owner at present, but when I was (in Halifax), I found the money for snow tires, even as a semi-starving student. The fact that I had never had an accident, or that I had AWD and ABS, was no excuse for jeopardizing other people’s safety.

  11. If you drive @ 30Km/h on a 100 series highway, you should be questioning your judgement to even leave the house that day. I have snow tires, but I don’t want to be MADE to buy them, this country is taking more and more freedoms and choices out of my hands. Because people are fucking useless when the snow flies doesn’t mean I should have to pay. If you can’t drive comfortably in the snow without the white knuckles, take transit, you’re a danger to people who know how to drive. I learned on the ice covered roads of northern Ontario and Manitoba, and never had snow tires up there. Been driving 25 years, no accidents.

  12. Bullet: So just because you’ve been driving 25 years, with “no accidents”, that automatically makes you a good driver? I think not. You just have no accidents that you’re aware of. Driving is a privilege, not a right, despite what most people think. You do not have the RIGHT to drive, you have the PRIVILEGE to drive. Proper safety precautions are mandatory as is, why shouldn’t snow tires be included in that? I suppose if I got piss loaded drunk and drove into the side of your house, you’d be cool with that, since it’s my “freedom and choice” to do so? Driving on snow covered roads (regardless of current weather conditions) is like driving with your feet. Sure, you can do it, but it doesn’t make it a good idea.

And to both Bullet and Shrike: People who drive over-cautiously in bad conditions are far better than those who drive over-aggressively. At least the slow ones are keeping other people from driving like idiots for the most part.

  13. No they aren’t, they’re causing people to take risks they normally wouldn’t because they’re creeping along scared shitless. Being over-cautious is just as bad as driving aggressively, people tend to over-react a a hint of a slide. What does no accidents mean to you? To me, it means I haven’t been in any collisions or in a ditch, pretty simple. I didn’t say anything about whether it’s a privilege or right. What I did say is that people who won’t take responsibility and learn to drive in adverse conditions, should be learning when the going gets tough, it’s a danger to other people. So it’s a privilege yes, one that comes with learning to control a vehicle and getting used to it’s dynamics, when the weather turns ugly i.e inertia, momentum and centrifugal forces. It’s not like driving with your feet, and if you think so, you’re in dire need of training. If you want to mandate snow tires, then fucking mandate winter driving schools and courses as well. And BTW, it IS still your choice to drink and drive, if you’re a fucking idiot. All the mandating in the world isn’t going to stop people from doing stupid shit, that’s obvious isn’t it?

  14. All seasons are a misnomer. They have been proven to be ineffective in winter driving conditions. Snow tires should be mandatory nationally! Why should a driver equipped with snow tires have to worry about being killed or maimed by someone with “all” seasons who isn’t properly equipped for winter driving conditions and causes a collision? Winter tires cost about $400. Isn’t a life worth more than that?

  15. Oceanlady…my snowtires with studs for heavy loads in my pickup cost me $245.00 each.
I’m not complaining, I’m just saying there are different prices. But IMO in Canada winter tires are necessary, those who spew the nonesence about 25 years driving in winter with baloney skins on & only 1 wheel touching the ground blah, blah blah ! Are completely out of touch with the simple reality IF YOU EVER get into a situation where you have had to crawl on a highway, slid trying to move up hill from a stop etc because of road conditions…then you should have had studded snow tires on. period
It only takes one ,,,just 1 accident for you to be seriously hurt or dead…more importantly, your selfishness & stupid way of thinking ,like somehow your driving is greater, or perhaps your drivings more magical or your more talented than anyone elses & snowtires make no difference! Are living in a fantasy land, & next major storm, I’ll meet you where ever you want & we’ll see say , how long it takes to go to Moncton in it !
I’m all set, 4×4 & studded tires & I’m going to Moncton on Wednesday, snow or no snow.

  16. I agree More, in Canada winter tires are a necessity. I managed to outfit my car for about $400 so pricing is different depending on brand and quality. Too bad more people didn’t think like you. No pun intended.

  17. More, more often than not it’s the guys with the coveted 4X4’a that are in the ditch. Four wheel drive is actually worse, giving people a false sense of traction when there isn’t. The only advantage to 4X is accelerating. Braking distances are increased. Physics at work again, more weight requires more distance to stop, and centrifugal forces make a slide harder to control. Getting to Moncton faster is no proof of driver skill or vehicle competence, it’s all tires, and the drivers ability to know where the limit of traction/adhesion is. It is what it is, I know about vehicle control and have been instructed by rally drivers in vehicle control. I chose to be trained after seeing the results of accidents of family members. It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence and ability thru training and experience that sets me apart from people that think they are the shit.

  18. Cost of 4 winter tires = $600

Cost of one fender bender = $500 deductible + increase in insurance premiums

So, you either bite the bullet and spend the money on the tires, which over their lifetime (say 4 winter seasons), will be only $600/4 = $150/year. OR you can risk getting into that one fender bender and end up paying more in the long run.

Bullet is correct about the driver training. All those people buy into the false sense of security with a large SUV or pickup truck. They’re the ones you read about dying or going off the road first because they don’t know how to drive properly. Those vehicles are more susceptible to roll overs in extreme maneuvers such as swerving or tire failure, which regular vehicles would not experience. That being said, it doesn’t hurt to take it a bit easy during times of bad weather. Even though you may know what you’re doing, the other people may not and they may end up panicking and doing something which causes a pile up.

If any of you want to get to Moncton stress free (regardless of weather), take the train. No 4×4 or studded tires can compete with a train. The only time they ever get delayed is when some idiot either jumps in front of the train OR their invincible 4×4 gets stuck on the tracks and gets plowed by a train.

  19. My vehicle takes me where I want to go when I want to go there.
THis way I travel when & where I want.
The scheduals of others doesn’t get in my way, that’s important to me. Back at the first of Dec. when at 6 am I was going toward Halifax, I passed 17 vehicles in the ditch, into the guardrails & in two places multiple vehicles all into each other, I had to pass by at least 100+ cars doing 20 to 30 KMS on a divided highway WTF ? ? ? ?
    20 kms an hour ?
I had no traction problems in 2 wheel drive at 80 kms an hour above that I could feel the truck getting loose. So why is that ?
I’m a super great, trained, ultimate rally, superman driver ?!?!?!?!?!?!
    I CERTAINLY DON’T THINK SO !
I had brand spanking new STUDDED WINTER tires on my truck & about 500 lbs of shit in the back…at 80 KMS in the outside lane it was like driving on VELCRO…not because I was all that…but because the EQUIPMENT WAS THE CORRECT GEAR NEEDED FOR THE JOB .—PERIOD—
Everyone who was driving on that highway at 20 kms an hour should have been pulled over by the mounties & had their vehicles towed. Every Single One IMO…they were the hazzard, not me & the guys & girls who were also traveling at 80+ klicks trying to get around these fuckin’ bozo’s & their all season garbage, if all seasons was any good why were they CRAWLING down the road ? hmmm ?

Those of you defending them are more than likely driving with the same usless pieces of shit tires on your vehicles.

  20. So what are you going to do when your spanking new studded tires are @ 3/32″ of tread. Right, you’ll probably try to get another year out of them like anyone else would. So lets just mandate that all winter tires be replaced at 6/32″ tread depth. Because 4X4 makes up for that right? Ever been in a skid at 80KM/h? I bet you haven’t, and I can tell you, you’re goddamned lucky to save it, I don’t care what tires you have on there. I agree with you about people driving overcautious, look at my previous, but I don’t think the addition of winter tires is going to polish their driving skills any. Most people would only buy winter tires for the drive wheels anyway, which is idiotic and a quick way to perform 180’s on a highway. Bottom line, I’m going to have to deal with these morons all winter……unless……..we can mandate the scaredy-cats off the roads.

  21. Put another way. When the weather is really shitty, I don’t care if the bulk of the plebeians have tank tracks and front loaded heat blowers melting the snow ahead of them. They drive like their minds have been scooped clear of their skulls. They need to pull over with their flashers on and wait until the roads are devoid of all drivers. All because they negotiated a right turn or successfully parked way back whence, while being tested for their licence, doesn’t equate safe drivers even if they have ablative armour and a force field.

  22. back in 1984,i lived in hubbards,i had a big old 74 ford ltd.that thing was a beast,i had mud and snow tires on back, and snow tires on the front.i left for work at 6:30 a.m.,on dec 20,a dark dry day,no snow on the roads at that time, but cold as a witch nit.ever see or been on black ice before? i did,and let me tell everyone here,i fucken near got killed that morning.i was driving the limit on the old hiway, just out of black point, and my car hit black ice,and no matter how i tried to control the skid, slide, whatever you wanna call it,i ended up in the ditch.it was warm the night before, but froze real fast by the time i left home.i got my car out due to some backing up,and burning fuck out of tires, but made it in to work, only 10 minutes late.it could have been never made it at all.btw,i used to drive stock cars for years, had driver training, and used to play in the heavy snow, teaching others about controling your vehicle in a slide/skid.i don’t care who you are,how much ex[perience you have,it can,and most likely will happen,to you,and you might not be as lucky as i was.do i drive now, occasionally, when i really need to be someplace faster than a bus.other than that,my 96 lincoln mark 7 stays in storage.

  23. I rather a good set of all seasons to a crappy set of winters. Worn winters are no better than good all seasons. That said, for the amount of “weather” we get here in the city, either will do fine. If you live in the boonies on second rate roads (ya I know they’re all second rate, LOL), then winters (a good set) are needed.

  24. Oceanlady,

Where in my post did I say the value of a life was $500 or $600? I was doing a cost analysis in which long term thinking pays off over short term thinking.

Now, if you really want to know what the value of a life is, ask the courts who fine drivers ~$400 after they’ve killed someone in a crosswalk. There have been several cases in the HRM in the past couple of years.

  25. I stand corrected. According to the CAA:

The Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, adopted in 1989, under Section 100 (1), identifies the duty of each motorist to drive carefully and in a prudent manner. Anyone who fails to do so will be found guilty of careless and imprudent driving. This charge can bring with it a fine of $250 and is considered a crime worth six demerit points. A motorist may also have their licence immediately suspended or revoked by the Registrar. A court hearing is required to rescind the decision and for the motorist to reclaim their licence. The province also holds the right to lay the charges on Nova Scotians found guilty of reckless or careless driving in other parts of the country when they return to Nova Scotia.

So, if you “accidently” kill someone in a crosswalk, you’ll be getting a $250 fine as well as six demerit points. A life is only worth $250, which is 1/2 of what Oceanlady was suggesting.

  26. Life Sucks: I think we used to be neighbors! Is the model of your Lincoln proudly displayed on your license plate?

  27. no sorry it isn’t,there is no plate on the front, and the back is alpha numeric.plus it is a white 2 door, every creature comfort you can imagine is in that beast.but i keep it inside in the winter.never seen a bit of snow since new,the way i bought it.

  28. Yep MUST GET TO BEER STORE IN SNOW STORM !!!!!!!! Fuckin dummies and PS it is illegal to have snow piled on your car while driving – its called obstruction of view . Also same goes for snow on your mini van roof ( truck whatever ) its also a ticket . And aslo blocking your plate with snow is same ticket .

  29. there should be a waiver on the ban of snowmobiles on city streets when beer is needed; i mean come on someone could be like beerless for hours:)
