I’m not only disgusted but ashamed every time I take my garbage out of my building to dispose of it. There are no recycling bins, there is no compost disposal, it all goes into one big smelly bin.
What happened to composting and recycling in big apartment buildings? I grew up outside of HRM and am used to back yard composting, feeding the birds and honestly having little to no garbage because once it’s sorted in its proper place garbage is minimal.
I’m aware I now don’t live outside HRM and “backyard composting” in a big apartment building is not going to happen, but I have every bloody right to have my garbage sorted and disposed of the way it’s supposed to be. Aren’t there fines for garbage not being sorted properly? I know there is at work, why doesn’t this apply to apartment buildings? It’s disgusting seeing how much food goes to waste, maggoty and smelly all over the stuff that someone else has to sort. —Wants to compost

My building doesn’t have any compost or recycling, only garbage. I was separating and bagging my recyclables only to see that when they collect the garbage it all goes in the back of a pick-up truck.
I live in an apartment building of about 30 units in the south end. All other buildings I have lived in larger and smaller have had at least recycling, but not this one.
Frig we got notices in our building saying HRM was fining them for not complying with proper waste disposal and if they found out who wasn’t recycling/composting they would send the fine to the resident.
Probably a bunch of crap…like the lies they tell about the pipes freezing in the winter. No, they just don’t want to have to spend the $$$ on the extra heating fuel if people opened their windows a crack.
Write a letter to the owner of the building and suggest how sorting and recycling can be implemented at your apartment.
Take your garbage to the landlord’s and dispose of it there.

most places were issued bins, but seems that someone decided to start collecting them, for themselves. fucking thieves will steal anything these days.
I’m pretty sure you can take it up with your landlord… or piss them off and go to the gubment and narc on them.

I am down with compostin. I lived in an apartment for two months before where I live now and they only had garbage.
I just walked down the street to use random’s green bins, and put my recycling bags out front of the apartment on garbage day. It was only an 8 unit buildign so it wasn’t hard to get away with.
Shouldn’t have to sneak around to reduce garbage.
It doesn’t matter where you put compost, it will decompose wherever it is…
If in a landfill, compost will actually decrease in volume long after initial compaction, causing collapses and general structural problems. This makes the already stupid and expensive landfill problem even harder and more expensive.
Also, municipal compost creates a really great product used as topsoil all around Nova Scotia.
