You know, with all that’s going on in the world: Egyptian protests, extreme Australian weather, mass slaughter of sled dogs… I have to wonder, how spoiled are we to be complaining of student loans, small apartments and loud neighbours? Most people don’t even know what’s going on in Egypt. Open your eyes, people, for the world extends far beyond HRM. —Heathro

  1. Because they can? I don’t know who here in naive Halifax can to anything about Egypt or the weather in Australia… certainly not I. Tell you what, you go to Egypt and fix that, then bring those dogs back to life… I have found nothing but concern and compassion in NS. People take care of me, I take care of them. This is a bitch board, no matter how silly we all are. But we are not naive… not by a long shot.

  2. I also agree! I have the right to bitch about the 30 grand I owe while sitting in my shoe-box size one bedroom with wall thin enough that I can hear a kid wailing on one side and dryers thumping from the weird shit people put in there on the other side and none of that makes me naive : )

  3. We all know, but there’s nothing we can do, I can’t do anything about Egypt’s transition from military dictatorship to Islamist dictatorship.

  4. And just think there’s some poor shlonk, who, if they restore internet etc, is sitting in Egypt going on and on on Love The Way We Taliban about those poor fuckers in HRM who are plagued by the NDP/City Council who are bound and determined, despite being broke and dead aginst it, going ahead and building their own Pyramid.
At least they get to have chickens in their shanties I bet.

  5. Well Donk, considering winter just showed up today, pretty good thank you 🙂

    Hows ben schoolin goin?

yorkke – I don’t think that the military will give up it’s power, it probably will always have a lot of say in how things are done.
Hopefully, who ever finally gets a government going isn’t extreme, one way or the other.

Governments come and go, corruption is forever.

  6. The OB sounds like a pretentious indie snob. People tend to be upset about what actually affects THEM.

Go listen to some obscure band, eat your granola and cry yourself to sleep in Mommy’s basement about the problems in the world.

  7. No it doesn’t extend past HRM, HRM is all there is. I say this because it’s snowing out and I can’t exactly do anything or go anywhere right now. In fact, my perch here in my kitchen is all there is, fuck the rest of HRM, no one exists past my perch.

  8. Yeah OP, lets forget about noticing and improving our own local problems just because “someone somewhere else has it worse”, that’s good for progress!

There are plenty of “world issues” threads on the internet OP, go find them. Then you can join all the other self-righteous online slacktivists who are too busy talking the talk to walk the walk.

  9. AHAHAHAHAHA BILL AND BEN THAT MADE MY WHOLE DAMN DAY…well, besides zed’s thinly veiled birthday wishes *blush*

  10. So we have an entire country in turmoil that could explode into violence; a natural disaster that has claimed the lives of many Aussies and wrought untold damage; AND WE HAVE DEAD DOGS… wow, glad that deserves the same press as Egypt self-destructing. What next, the horrendous torture visited upon hapless groundogs every February? PTSD from being woken up? Get a perspective OP!

  11. until, and when they start their shit in my neighborhood, fuck em. but the dogs now, that’s another thing. son of a bitches should be shot themselves, or bring them to me.
if you don’t like the way i answered your question, then that is your problem, i answer the way i feel at the moment.

  12. “We all know, but there’s nothing we can do, I can’t do anything about Egypt’s transition from military dictatorship to Islamist dictatorship.”

Pfft. Like you know anything about the protests besides what Fox News tells you pops.

  13. “Pfft. Like you know anything about the protests besides what Fox News tells you pops.”

Well admittedly I am no expert but I have followed it on TV with CBC and CTV and CNN and online with Al Jazeera and Hurriyet and I’ve seen the odd Egyptian who has been able to get on Twitter.

And I’ve previously read up on Mubarak and the Muslim Brotherhood and I knew about ElBaradei and his work with the IAEA.

But I’m not an expert, I’m not there and I can’t read Arabic.

  14. No matter how you slice it, a lot of people suck…whether they are killing each other over opinion and turf or killing dogs because they can no longer find a way to exploit them, it all sucks. But, as long as the majority of people ARE protesting any and all bad behaviour, there is still hope for us.

  15. Snappy! Hi there! Missed ya sweetie! How’s the wrist? All better now?

And speaking of snapping: I stand behind what I said! 😀

  16. Don’t worry snapper… you didn’t miss anything.
In fact, you could likely hibernate under that rock for another month and not miss much.

  17. Well despite World turmoil, flooding in Aussie, Egyptian uprising, wars all over the place, sled dog massacres, WIKI leaks – all our esteemed colleagues on HRM council can think about is handing out graffiti cleaning kits so we can scrub up purty for our international visitors!!!

Wouldn’t it be easier to use the money for the cops to actually catch some of these scallywags, break their fingers and arms, make them sign on at NSCAD, get horrendous debts and never land a meaningful job???

  18. Minus the involvement of law enforcement Baz, thats pretty much how it works already, No? ^^^

Missed you too Snapster. >: )

  19. Welcome back kid, RC is having a boy, so YES there is news 😛

Morning all. Here’s hoping that the snow-blower works .

  20. A change in Gov’t in Egypt isn’t going to end the corruption, it’ll just change hands…… Look for the next opportunistic leader to run with it and fill their pockets.

  21. I’d care more if I didn’t have stabbing pain in my right eye socket/temple right now. *shrug*

    FML.

  22. anyone who compares 100 dogs getting shot to anything involving loss of human life can go fuck them selves. real talk.

ever think about how many dogs the PETA “slaughters” each year?

The PETA Headquarters in Norfolk VA has killed 23,640 adoptable cats and dogs between 1999 and 2009, that is contrasted by an amazing 3091 that they found homes for in the same 10 year period.

In 2009 they found homes for 8 and killed 2,301.

Just because you think sled dogs are cute and majestic doesn’t mean that they are more worthy of life than any other animals. No one seems to care about any animals dying until its the cute and “nobel” ones.

  23. not this bitch neville, but then i’m not stupid…i loathe peta and the damage they’ve done. animals suffering for no good reason is not really comparable to much of anything

  24. I disagree neville, with the last part. Although I understand and completely agree with the hypocrisy of animal rights activists only putting the cute animals on their posters. People are more likely to give money to PETA if there’s a seal on the poster, as opposed to say, a crab… because they are evil and manipulative.

While I don’t necessarily believe that “some animals are more worthy of life than others” I do think that we as humans rightly have more empathy for higher animals than lower animals because we see higher animals as having greater capacities for consciousness, pain, and emotion. This has turned out to be true, scientifically.

For example: pain. We know that if a living thing doesn’t have a nervous system cannot feel pain (plants) we have no emotional qualms about cutting down plants. Insects, have a rudimentary nervous system that isn’t wired to their brain, that’s why some can live without their heads… so still no pain. Rodents, a more complex nervous system than insects, can feel some pain. Canines, even more complex nervous system than rodents, even more capacity for pain. Etc. The general rule is that the more highly evolved the being is the greater it’s capacity for pain. If we know something can feel pain, we, having felt pain ourselves are able to identify with it more.

This continuous expansion of a living thing’s capacity to experience things like pain the higher up it is on the tree of life also goes for emotion and the ability to be conscience of ones surroundings. Dogs have a higher capacity for emotion than fish do. Lions are more conscience of their surroundings than beetles are. etc.

Sam Harris makes this argument in the first two and a half minutes of this video much better than I ever could. So at the risk of repeating myself here’s a link I think I’ve linked to in the past.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj9oB4zpHww…

  25. So I guess I don’t actually disagree with you, it’s a case of higher animals happening to be the more noble and majestic… simply because they are bigger…

  26. what about all the dolphins getting caught in tuna trolling nets?
they never get the publicity they deserve….

  27. And lets be clear that PETA does care about the lower animals in their own twisted way. They do support chickens, and bees, and cows, and lobsters. Because they believe in total animal liberation… which means that every living thing must be set free and not have anything to do with humans. It’s just that they make their money off of the cute animals, while failing to advertise the fact that a world where PETA rules would be free of human consumption of animal milk… say hello rickets children!

  28. Those students can complain all they want, but I think the $7500 they get from every tax payer already is more than enough. In fact, I think we should cut subsidies completely… that would give them something to complain about.

  29. No horseback riding, no honey, no ant farms, no zoos, no farms, no meat, no seeing eye dogs, no police dogs, but most important of all NO LOL CATS!!!

  30. What is going on in Egypt, Tunisia, Somalia etc…is one group of dictatorial assholes will be replaced by another group withthe same agenda…different name.

Move along folks nothing new to see here !

  31. Snoop,

You should back up your anti-PETA remarks with a reference/link. People used to say things about feminists, for example, that had no factual basis but did feed unfortunate stereotypes. PETA has done a lot of good work in raising awareness about animal cruelty issues. I don’t think they object to people owning pets or keeping bees or riding horses.

Personally, I am troubled by the destruction of 100 sled dogs by a sled dog tour operator in B.C. I’d like to know why it was done. Was it one of those business decisions like the kind they make in the dog racing business all the time? We don’t need you right now so we’re going to shoot you?

As for the OP, don’t take the existence of this bitch board and its trivial concerns as evidence that Haligonians are naive or ignorant about larger issues. As you probably already know, this place was established for people to make anonymous complaints and other people who comment here either agree with them or complain that the complainer is a whiner . . . or complainer.

Can it get any more absurd than that?

  32. i would agree that in the early years peta were my go to guys. animal cruelty is one of those things that burns a hole in me, but i’m realistic. absurdity is my lure ce

  33. Actually, Commandante, PETA objects to all of those things and considers humans having pretty much any relationship with animals to be enslavement. They also (quietly) condone violence against human beings as means of fighting for animal rights. My source? “I am an Animal”, a documentary about Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA. It’s a very candid and objective look at PETA and the ideologies behind the organization, definitely worth watching for anyone who wants to know what PETA’s all about. Newkirk willingly participated in the doc, and despite its obvious criticisms of their methodologies, PETA actually promotes the film as an honest portrayal of their leader and her beliefs. It’s pretty eye-opening stuff.

  34. Also, to the OP: Like most reasonably bright folks in NS and elsewhere, I am perfectly capable of being angry/upset the situation in Egypt AND being annoyed by the petty shit in my everyday life. It’s just another form of multi-tasking, really. I can’t speak for all but, at least in my case, there’s plenty of bitch to go around 🙂

  35. Ingrid Newkirk has done to Animal Rights what Andrea Dworkin did to Feminism ( or what George W. Bush did for the Air National Guard, for that matter). Gotta be fair here.
    > ; )

  36. From Wikipedia: “PETA argues that it would have been better for animals had the institution of breeding them as “pets” never emerged, that the desire to own and receive love from animals is selfish, and that their breeding, sale, and purchase can cause immeasurable suffering. They write that millions of dogs spend their lives chained outside in all weather conditions or locked up in chain-link pens and wire cages in puppy mills, and that even in good homes animals are often not well cared for. They would like to see the population of dogs and cats reduced through spaying and neutering, and for people never to purchase animals from pet shops or breeders, but to adopt them from shelters instead. PETA supports hearing dog programs where animals are taken from shelters and placed in appropriate homes, but does not endorse seeing-eye-dog programs because, according to one of their Vice Presidents, “the dogs are bred as if there are no equally intelligent dogs literally dying for homes in shelters.””

  37. Ivan,

Would that be the Andrea Dworkin who maintained that ALL heterosexual intercourse was rape and that males’ repeated thrusting during the act was, in reality, a culturally determined behaviour meant to simulate stabbing the female with a knife?

  38. That’s the one. Quite a quantum leap from “Equal pay for equal work “to that little bit of Wimminly wisdom.

  39. Woah. I’ll stay under my rock if it means that I can still enjoy sex without those little pearls of wisdom cluttering up my noggin. Stabbing me? Oh well, it’s enjoyable stabbing. 🙂

  40. The protesters in Egypt are a broad group that isn’t only the Muslim Brotherhood. There are many secularists, leftists, socialists and assorted pro-democracy activists. Do you think that most of the students and youth there are trying to establish a theocracy? I think the majority of them are just tired of their American/Israeli fascist dictatorship where family members are tortured, elections let you choose from a list that has *one* presidential choice, journalists jailed, and they have no hope for the future.

Hell, yesterday the government sent in undercover police and militia to attack the protesters with people on horses and camels, with clubs, machetes, molotov cocktails, whips, knives, etc. The anti-government protesters were frisked for weapons before entering the main square, while the Mubarak thugs weren’t opposed by security forces. And people are saying they should let the dictator decide when elections are?

  41. well, i’ve done my dirty work for today, by baiting mm on the going hunting column. now i can sit back and relax, and wait for our next sorm, slated for today sometime. fucking bah humbug.

  42. Donk – as little as possible dear ;p

Retired. 30 yrs Navy, Electronics Tech. Just quit being a Technical Writer for a military contractor. Jack of all trades kinda.

A sailor & a biker, the ex-mom-in-law had a fit when she met me 🙂

  43. OP. I’ll get back to you on the corporate greed, coruption in governemt, the poor and homeless, violence, and the list goes on, in Canada and worldwide. Yes. It’s global. There is no Utopia. No God will save us but ourselves.

I’m a true believer of George Carlin. I miss him.

  44. Welll Hugo, turns out you’re more interesting than anticipated! I seriously thought you were a dentist. That or a veterinarian. Why, I have no idea.
