For all those suffering of the flu this fall and are afraid of it possibly being H1N1 (even if you are labeled “high risk”), stop. Do not go get tested. Do not go to the hospital. Do, however, get some Tylenol and go home, because that is all they are offering at Halifax’s hospitals today.

I only tell you this after my far from enjoyable 12.5 hour wait in emergency last night, where due to my “high risk” status (asthma), and after reading the “what to do” section of Canada Health’s recommendations, I thought it was the best thing to do. Clearly I was wrong. They took on 5 patients during my time there. FIVE! For the mathematically inclined that is one patient for every 2 and a half hours.

Oh yes, and here is the kicker. They refused to test any of us!! Why? Because they tested too many already..230 samples the doctor said.

Anyways, fuck our local health organization.

  1. The flu isn’t an emergency, unless you’re suffering majorly (aside from just feeling like crap). You should have known better.

  2. You know, ambulance and airlift patients dont come through the waiting room, and usually triage says these patients have priority. You understand a triage system yea?

The only sad thing re this bitch is your sanctimonius stupidity. If they sent you home telling you to take tylenol that means you shouldnt have been there.

F@#$ you, not the emergency dept.

  3. Honestly, who cares what your flu is called??? Stay the fuck home and do what they told you. Why do you need to have it named in order to know what to do?? Drink water, sleep, take tylenol, get over yourself!

    This H1N1 is bull shit.

  4. The health department is saying now, if your sick and high risk, go to your local emerg room or doctor.

“but now health oddivals want people to be extra cautious. High risk groups such as women in the second half of pregnancy, children under 5 and people with chronic illness, such as ashtma, are now urged to go to a doctor at the first sign of flu sickness.”

This person did the right thing.

  5. A bit blunt Walter…but I agree. If you’ve got a cold or flu like symptoms, why are you in an emergency room ?
There are many cold/flu medications available over the counter. You make an appointment & go see your family doctor or go to a clinic.
Too many people IMO seem to think emergency rooms are for their personal medical needs…I got a boo boo, take me to emerg ! That’s not the purpose of an emergency room !

  6. I think the media is now saying doctors have changed their advice and say to go if you’re in a high-risk group (like having asthma) and have certain flu symptoms. So it’s not just the flu, it’s when it’s compounded by asthma. I can’t blame the OP, they’re just doing what they’ve been advised to do. But hospitals are overwhelmed at the best of times. Maybe we aren’t using that 811 number as much as we should.

  7. I find it interesting you bitches disagree with the advice offered by your own government and then you go so far as to call her an idiot for following the recommendation. You bitches…..

#1 If you get flu-like symptoms and are pregnant or have underlying health problems contact your healthcare provider.

I believe asthma falls into that description.

But, seriously, OP. Make an appointment with your family doctor or at a walk-in clinic but leave the emergency room open for life-or-death situations since, clearly, yours was not one of these.

  8. the swine flue is a fucking scam! do not take the shot is just a fucking flu… we are not apes we know how to wash our hands and keep them out of our noses….

this school sickness shit is BS kids staying home for the sake of… STAYING HOME! the news is throwing the public into panic for no fucking reason, and the government is fucking our health care system by shutting everything down…

AND wasn’t is only a week or 2 ago when the news was saying the flu shot had been shipped and was waiting health Canada’s approval? they said we would be prepared… and look ITS A TOTAL CLUSTER FUCK!
GO WAITE IN LINE YOU MORONS! make sure you inject yourself with all the fun things that help preserve the vaccine, like thimarisol * which is noted for containing MERCURY….

jesus christ go online and do some research cus all the news is doing is SCARING THE SHIT OUT OF EVERYONE!

    MAKES ME SICK!!!!!!!!!!

  9. the origins of the swine flue are even sketchy!

go to the world health organizations website….

2 kids in California 100 miles apart fell sick TWO WEEKS BEFORE any cases were reported in MEXICO!…..
The flu didn’t not come out of no where its similar to the swine flu that his back in 79′ and the virus can be linked directly to a LAB CREATED VIRUS!

    Order out of CHAOS!!!
    Order out of CHAOS!!!
    Order out of CHAOS!!!
    Order out of CHAOS!!!

go find out for your self, rather than commenting about my comments, cus quite frankly i don’t give a fuck I’m just trying to let people see both sides, since the news stopped doing that long ago.

  10. If swine flu is a “LAB CREATED VIRUS” that lab must have been spewing it out prior to 1918 since many of our eldest seniors who survived the 1918 flu have antibodies for THIS flu. So how likely is your conspiracy theory? It’s NOT.

If you’re going to advise people to question their gov’t and question the “media” I suggest you WAKE UP and realize the internet IS media and deserves similar if not more careful scrutiny.

  11. Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia’s Chief Public Health Officer, will be joined on the webcast by Dennis Cochrane, deputy minister from the Department of Education, Dr. Ken Buchholz, senior physician advisor with the Department of Health, vaccine specialist Dr. Joanne Langley, professor of pediatrics at Dalhousie University, and Department of Labour and Workforce Development representatives Bill Grant, director, labour standards, and Dianne Jay-MacLeod, occupational hygienist, occupational health and safety division.

“I can appreciate many people will have questions about H1N1, including vaccines and safety,” said Dr. Strang. “It all can be quite confusing and complex.

The webcast can be accessed at http://www.gov.ns.ca/H1N1 and will be posted on the Department of Health Promotion and Protection’s website.

EastLink TV will re-broadcast the webcast across Nova Scotia on Friday, Oct. 30 at 10:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m.; and Monday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.

  12. “2 kids in California 100 miles apart fell sick TWO WEEKS BEFORE any cases were reported in MEXICO!…..”

Oh gee and what does California border on, HMMMM.

  13. “Oh gee and what does California border on, HMMMM.

oh gee do you even remember how they told you this virus came about… from pig farms in Mexico. kids must have been rolling in the mud with them.

you`d think mexico would be `crumbling` apart with this insane `Pandemic` flu and their impoverished living conditions in some areas…

then you have to love the fact that the bug is a never-before-seen intercontinental mixture of human, avian and pig viruses from America, Europe and Asia.

As reported by multiple sources last month, including the Times of India, vaccines contaminated with deadly live H5N1 avian flu virus were distributed to 18 countries last December by a lab at an Austrian branch of Baxter.

Baxter of course is the fine company supplying the states with the vaccine.

    HERE I`ll START YOU OFF…
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Health-…

go research `GlaxoSmithKline` the company that supplies Canada & UK

`The suggestion is clear: the virus was frozen in a laboratory freezer since 1950, and was released, either by intent or accident, in 1977. This possibility has been denied by Chinese and Russian scientists, but remains to this day the only scientifically plausible explanation`
    http://www.virology.ws/2009/03/02/origin-o…

  14. Yeah I do remember how the virus came about, natural evolution of influenza which just looooves to do the RNA sexx0rs with itself. Oh never before seen? Influenza A subtypes are the most common flu viruses in humans, and zoonotic as all fuck. H1N1 is a type A. What do we also have? Daily international travel to the tune of thousands of people. Chant “correlation is not causation” 20 times, do 5 Hail Marys, and go choke on your tinfoil hat.

  15. Those who are told you have H1N1, did they actually test your blood? If not, then they don’t know. It could be regular flu or something else entirely.

This thing has been nothing but an utter fiasco, from reporting to availability of the vaccine (for those who want it), to the distribution of the vaccine to the diagnosis.

I have absolutely no faith of those involved in this.

  16. Bro, they do a throat swab and the diagnosis is quick. From what I’ve experienced, my family doctor has been quite clear on availability (that being Nov. 2nd, in my case). I think most of the frustration lies in people showing up at clinics and expecting the shot then and there. There may also be confusion between the Feds saying that the vaccination is available on X date and then the provincial agencies not getting the shot until later. I’ll agree that that could have been communicated much better, especially on the federal side.

  17. It is a swab, Fever.

Hey, here’s an extra fun logic puzzle!

    Can you spot the problem?

“There are only 6 confirmed cases in Nova Scotia”

“We have ceased all testing for new cases.”

“There remains only 6 confirmed cases in Nova Scotia”

    Glad that’s over……

  18. nothing like tin foil hats, and pure facts.

Luthor has a point. shit just doesn’t add up. if you want the shot fine…

but to watch our health care system SHIT THE BED over a flu… just wait till much worse comes.

  19. My point was they tell people they have it without testing, so whether by swab or blood, the end result is the same. No tests.

  20. I had the flu a few weeks ago and they tested me. Pretty straightforward. Again, I think it’s because people head right to the ER instead of going to their GP.

  21. What I love is how Ontario has classified those under 65 with chronic illnesses in their priority group, but NS hasn’t.

Also, university students aren’t on the priority list either, and they’re definitely a community that’s in VERY close contact. It’s a double whammy for those of us who are uni students and have chronic illnesses, especially since there ARE confirmed cases of H1N1 in my particular department at SMU. Dal, SMU and MSVU should most definitely be given vaccines for their most vulnerable on campus.

AND health care workers haven’t all been properly vaccinated!

    Good job, NS, gooood job.

    What a shit show.

  22. I agree PK, this whole vaccination program has been handled very poorly. People with chronic illnesses, particularly illnesses like asthma and COPD should be on the priority list. The government created a great deal of hype around this vaccine and urged everyone to get the shot as soon as possible and then immediately runs short before the clinics even get off the ground. I’m not a medical expert but that does not seem like effective planning to me.

  23. Well, I have an appointment with my family doc in mid november to get my seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 shot…hopefully I’ll be able to get both then because being diabetic, the last time I had the seasonal flu I was knocked out on my ass for a month and it took another month for my blood sugars to stabilize…H1N1 is much worse and I’ve heard of people who had chronic illnesses with swine flu being admitted to hospitals….and I really don’t have time for that shit.

  24. To add to PK’s remark about students; it’s also a double-wammy if you work with/around the general public (fast food/malls/ect.)
Handling cash, interacting with 100s of people per shift, hand santizier dispensers that aren’t operational is a lil nerve racking, and I’m becomin a bit of a germaphobe because I cannot afford to get sick. I don’t have a chronic illness, but my ammune system sucks

  25. I treat H1N1 as population control. Darwin would agree, but you can ask what would Jesus do. Go H1N1!
