SHUT UP RETAIL WORKERS
I am sick and when I’m not sick… I’m sick and TIRED of hearing the retail workers bitch about having to work on Sundays. BOO FUCKING HOO. I work in a profession where we work weekends, evenings AND holidays. If you retail people aren’t bitching about w

If you can’t take the hours, DON’T FUCKING WORK RETAIL! It can’t get simplier than that.Personally, I believe some people just like bitching for the sake of bitching.
Perhaps you should go back to SCHOOL so you can get a job where you can work Monday to Friday 9am to 5pmAre you seriously suggesting only the less educated work retail??? We live in a democracy. Didn’t your higher education teach you that people are free to speak in a democracy. Even mental midgets like yourself.
Raoul,There you go, reading way too much into something again. I didn’t write this article but I do agree with it. Blah blah blah democracy blah blah. 24/7 MIGHT have just been pointing out the fact that if the retail people do not like working SUNDAYS AND STATS to go back to school so they can get A JOB THAT HAS MON-FRI 9-5 HOURS. DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT? In no part of that article did that person say anything degrading to retail workers. NOR did that person say anything about uneducated people in retail. Read an article for what it is and stop causing so much frigging drama. God you annoy me.
24/7 When I first moved to Hfx and couldn’t find a job in my field right away, I worked at Sobey’s to help pay the bills – for a whole year. Most of the fine people I worked with were university students working to help pay the enormously high tuition fees in NS. They were good, honest, and hard working people and NOT ONE OF THEM had a potty mouth. I’ll let you try to work that out in your feeble little mind.
Tinkerbell, my apologies that you did not understand my post before attempting to do a rip-job. Do you understand there is a difference between less educated and uneducated? You are correct that 24/7 said nothing about uneducated people working in retail; neither did I. Did you notice I was also asking a question there and not making a statement? I was looking for clarification from 24/7 not a tirade from you … talk about reading too much into something.I’m not really sure about the first line of your post. Do you have some kind of pre-determined bias toward me? It’s OK if you typed before you thought, we all do it from time to time. The funny thing is I agree that retail workers sound rediculous with this complaint … thanks for asking. However, to tell someone to “SHUT THE HELL UP” and to improve their education to improve their work schedule comes across as just a tad arrogant.People do have a right to voice their opinion blah blah and it’s OK not to agree with it blah blah. It’s not OK to tell a peer to shut up about it and that was my point.Excellent post from bj and it made me think before I responded to you. How the message is delivered can be as important as the message itself. Did you notice that you and 24/7 spent much of your post yelling? On that note, please don’t be annoyed by God … I’m sure God loves you 🙂
Ahem…I think the whole point of this “debate” is that there are still retail workers who do not want to work on Sundays, or stat holidays, and they are quite vocal about it. The original poster is voicing his/her opinion about this, which they have every right to do (albeit, I would have made a better choice of words, if it were me). Everyone has their own opinion…those who work retail have their bias based on the fact that they are the ones that would have to work on Sundays and stat holidays. Those who do not work retail (and never have) and do not work Sundays or stat holidays have their bias as well, based on the fact that they do not know what it is like to work retail, and only see retail from the consumer’s POV. I can understand both sides of the debate, as I worked in retail from the age of 16 to the age of 30. It was mostly part time, becoming full time management in the latter part of that time period. Currently I do not work retail (but still in customer service), and I am lucky enough to have a day job, for the most part. However, there are times when, if the need arises, I have to support my place of business in an after-hours/weekend capacity. This is demand due to THE NEEDS OF THE BUSINESS. I accepted this potential for extra support when I took the job. I am available to adapt accordingly if there is a change in the needs of the business. Modern day retail business needs have changed dramatically over the past 5-10 years, and consumers pretty much have a stronghold on what dictates when a business can and cannot operate. The government finally realized this, and left the decision of when a retail business can be open (within reason) up to the individual businesses. This is how it should have always been. Yes, the rights of the workers would have to be maintained, but workers have to realize that in order for the business to remain competitive, business needs will change, and if you are not able to adapt, then perhaps (as original poster said in a rather blunt tone) you should seek other avenues for employment. Take responsibility for your own future…sometimes change has to come from within.PS…rampant name-calling is not a good basis for intelligent debate. 🙂
PPS…as for the bitter employees who already work Sundays and stat holidays (such as the original poster)? The same message goes out to you…if you are not happy about it, then seek alternatives and make the change. Fair is fair. 🙂
I really don’t understand why people are crapping all over 24/7..who I wish by the way would back me up on this. He might have come across “abrupt” but hey don’t we all when annoyed? Why would BJ bother making a comment about how fabulous the people are at Sobeys and they didn’t have potty mouths? That has no relevence at all to the issue. I’m glad you had an enjoyable time at Sobeys really I am…so you are saying that gives them the right to bitch about the hours they have to work???Retail workers are always complaining whether it’s about working Sundays or stats. I just saw on the news the other evening actually how upset retail workers were when there was mentioned the possibility of a stat in February…they all sent in emails…which were read on air. I think we are all tired of hearing the bitching. I agree with Brigette…if people are unhappy there is always the alternative to go back to school and make a change in your life. (which is what 24/7 said as well) As for Raoul I’m sorry but I think you do fly off the handle and are very quick to pick something out of an article to ridicule the one who wrote it.
Let 24/7 yell if he wants to. I know I am sick and tired of the crap as well. If I hear on the news one more time about the “sunday shopping” issue I am going to go postal!! How people tolerate this crap is beyond me. It’s ridiculous. Find another job if it’s that bad. REALLY. And I agree there are alot of jobs out there that are 24/7, wonder why none of those people complained when the topic of a stat in February was brought up? GEE I wonder.Oh and BJ thanks for sharing your work experiences with us…it was amazing…gave us all the warm fuzzies. Really.
There aren’t many jobs out there as of late that DON’T entail working on Sundays, sadly. The problem with getting out of what I had once dubbed “The Retail Trap” and finding a new job is…if you only have retail experience on your resume, then most potential employers can’t see past this to any other qualifying skills. As the old saying goes “Can’t get a job without experience…can’t get experience without a job”. It is increasingly difficult to break out of the retail trap…a lot of people manage to work their way up in retail, and to cross over to a new field most times requires a lot of self-selling, determination, and (unfortunately) a pay cut…unless you have the credentials and/or education required. In my experience of doing interviews and hiring employees, I learned that what is on the resume is a puffed-up version of the person behind it. You have to go and drop off resumes in person, introduce yourself, show a real interest in a potential employer. This is what impresses, not a resume with a bold font on pretty paper. (A bit off topic…but I tend to stray from time to time). :)~As for the posters who are sick and tired of retail workers complaining…and especially to “Secret”, whose sarcasm was quite evident in their response to BJ sharing what I thought was a nice change to the negativity…would you care to share with the rest of us your warm fuzzy stories of your own jobs? From the sound of things, you must be quite happy working at your respective jobs, and have nothing to complain about whatsoever…except for other people complaining about THEIR jobs. To 24/7…you are in health care, correct? You chose to go into that profession, correct? You went to university, completed your degree, and are now settled into your chosen career, correct? You came off a tad bitter about your own job…if you CHOSE to work it, then really, you shouldn’t be complaining about the retail workers. They did not choose to work Sundays…they were TOLD.
I don’t think 24/7 sounds bitter about his job at all actually, Brigette. All these dramatic speculations you people are making. I think he is venting about the whining from the retail workers that is plastered all over the media. Being in a work environment means you have to be able to adapt to change. If you are unable to adapt to change then leave that job and good luck finding a job where there isn’t change involved. I think the moral of this story is to suck it up or get the hell out. Seriously people. We all have to grow up at some point and realize that being a grownup involves adapting to changing work environments as well as society. Anyway I am done with this article, I think 24/7 got his point across and used his job as an example of a grownup world.
Thank you, Secret…I believe I already mentioned that in my initial post, but thanks again for reiterating my point in a much grittier tone. :)My “dramatic speculations”, as you call them, were far from dramatic; you are interpreting them that way. MY interpretation of 24/7’s wording is that they DO sound a smidge bitter, and they are using the “plight” of the retail workers as their catalyst for their own venting. For example, telling someone that doesn’t like working retail to get an education in order to find a 9-5 M-F job? This type of a statement makes one draw the conclusion that retail workers are not educated, whether it was an off the cuff remark or a serious statement. Another example would be your own ending statement in your last post, how “24/7 got his point across and used his job as an example of a grownup world”. What was the point of this statement? I’ve had a few people read this and try to interpret your meaning behind it. All have said that it sounds like you feel retail workers are not grownups. Many people, such as yourself and 24/7, can’t see both POV about this issue. When I had a discussion about this with my mother, a 62 year old retail employee, she became quite angry. These statements blanketed all retail employees as uneducated and young. My mother is neither of those, and at the age of 62, she has no other options for work. She has worked retail for about 20 years now, is facing a clawback on her company pension, and is attempting to take care of my father who can no longer work due to his having a stroke and a heart attack in a 2 month period. This is an example of someone in that “retail trap”, and in this case, change would be an option with rather substantial ramifications. Being adaptable and open to change is one thing. Whether or not there are actually other viable options to turn to is another.
Brigette, the first thing I would like to say is that I feel a great sympathy for the situation that your mother is faced with. Honestly I applaud her for her strength, she is a victim of circumstances and I really would not wish that on anybody. Her situation is one that should be addressed in an entirely different bitch, for example “how are we taking care of our elders, as that we all will be faced with these same issues eventually”.That being said-I can honestly say that as long as people are getting the appropriate legal amount of time off, then everyone should have to deal! I personally am sick of this discussion and do not think the people who are doing the complaining about having to work Sundays have a leg to stand on. My mother was a nurse and when my father passed away when I was young, it didn’t matter that we would have to wait 3 days to have a Christmas, it was just the way it was. Yes it sucked, it sucks now when I plan to go away on a weekend and everything blows up at my job and instead of working my 45-50 hour normal work week – I now have to work 66+ hours without a day off for 2 weeks. Now I don’t want to sit here and go on bitching about my plights, because I am sure you have your own. That unfortunately is the reality of 90% of the population. Work SUCKS! Yes sometimes we have a job we love, YEH! I think that is great, however there are still going to be aspects to this job that you are not going LOVE so much and the same thing can be said vice versa for the Jobs everyone hates.I agree with Secret – people have to be adaptable and if you are not then it is the progatory of the employer to look else where for new employees. One last thing I think for anyone to assume that a person is uneducated just because they are in the retail industry is ridiculous! and I don’t take that to be what is being suggested by these other posts.
I don’t like having to work on Tuesdays because this is when I get to see my family. but guess what I have too in order to eat.
And this is why people….that we love Jeanne. Thanks for backing me up 🙂
I have been an employer and employee. I will say I think experience is really relative, most people who have the aptitude towards a specific job than that is what really matters for experience. Being ADAPTABLE is the most important thing for any job that wants to grow and profit. To the people who don’t wnat to work on Sundays or Stats- think about- would you rather be unemployable? I highly doubt this new law is going to change.
“This just in….retail workers want legislated day off the rest of us don’t get””And in the weather…dark again tonight.”
