So the city got 500,000 from NSP for the naming rights for the oval… NSP the same company that not only increases power rates year after year but guarantees their shareholders profits of 9 to 10 percent. Why does a power utility need to ‘advertise’ when they carry a monopoly on electricity? To know that I’m getting screwed when I go to the oval as well?
In a decade we’ll all be sitting in the dark as we can’t afford to even turn the lights on. In most other parts of the world they would have stormed the legislature in outrage. Think about what the rising cost of food did to other parts of the world. —Ashamed in the Greed of Man

  1. it would make more sense for them to say they’ll light the oval for free for the next ten years.

  2. I have to agree with the OP. I think it is in poor taste to give away money like water for unneeded advertising when people have to scrap up money to pay their ever increasing power bills.

  3. I agree 100% with the OB. It’s pointless. They are the only electrical utility in the province so why the need to advertise, other than to look for new investers.
I wouldn’t hold my breath with regards to NSP providing free electricity to the oval (lighting, chillers, etc). The city will probably still be on the hook for all that. In fact, they’ll probably want to somehow make a profit off it all and start charging people an admission fee.
They’re playing us like chumps because they DO have the monopoly and what the hell can we do about it? Nothing. And they know it. It’s not like we can boycott them. We all NEED electricity. I guess what pisses me off the most is that nothing is being done to put these greedy fucks in their place. They’re playing this province like a fiddle and nobody in political power is doing a damn thing to stop them. The mere fact that 2 major paper mills are forced to shut down mostly in part to not being able to afford ever increasing power rates should be a huge red flag for the provincial gov’t that something is not kosher here. Then again, for all I know, the gov’t is probably one of the major shareholders. It really wouldn’t surprise me. In any regard, I think at a minimum and as a start, there should be a complete and thorough independent review of how the URB operates and the processes it has in place with regards to setting power/gas rates. Does anyone honestly remember ever hearing of them DENYING a rate increase, ever? I think there is something fishy in the state of Denmark and for some reason, nobody wants to try and suss it out.

  4. So a company that provides an essential service; has a monopoly on said service; has to provide guaranteed profits to its shareholders; is crying about losing money due to large customer shut-downs; requests rate increases year after year without improving service; now magically has HALF A MILLION DOLLARS simply to piss away on advertising.
If this weren’t so obscene it would be laughable. How will you tell the people who can no longer afford the increased power rates to heat their homes? Just go skating to warm up?!? This is fucking absurd!!!

  5. Why the hell does NSpower need advertising? So we won’t all come to our senses and go off the grid? Cripes, it’s almost like a massive ad campaign about how oxygen is good for you.

  6. And you needn’t think that the city declined primary sponsorship from a major brewery because it wanted to be anything remotely close to being “morally responsible” and “portraying a proper image”, and THEN only to accept funding from NSP instead. Pffft. I call MAJOR BULLSHIT! There is more to this whole deal then they are letting us know. Mark my words.

  7. And don’t worry. They’ve already looked after the possibility of people wanting to move off the grid. I would love nothing more than to live, even partially, off the grid. But due to where I live and certain city by-laws regarding the installation and use of such things as windmills in HRM and the prohibitive up front costs of other alternate forms of power, they have secured their future quite nicely, thank you very much.

  8. Some rich bastard needs to start another power co or a solar panel installation co. that would rock that balls off NS Power. They need a solid competitor because their rates are some jacked up bullshit.

  9. It’s not NSP that put up the money it was the shareholders of Emera, before you bitch and complain you should read and know the facts and stop beliveing everything the liberal party is handing you.
My monthly cable/phone/internet bill went up without notice and I don’t see anyone complaining about that. Grocery bills keep climbing and I don’t see anyone out protesting about that. Canada pays one of the highest wirless bills and I don’t see weekly bitches about that. Oh and we can’t forget gas/oil prices, I don’t see them ponying up anything for the good people of Halifax
It was the people of HFX that cried and complained to keep this oval so blame the real villians, if you can’t afford to pay your power bill then maybe you should cancel your cable.

  10. Obviously the poster ‘youboreme’ works for NSP or is a shareholder.

You state we should know the facts. However, you didn’t state any to suport your rant.

  11. Not a shareholder nor do I work for Emera or NSP, I just know how to do my research before I post ignorance.

  12. I’m going to start my own power company, and it’ll have blackjack, and hookers! Oh wait, forget the blackjack and power company!

  13. youboreme… wow. defending actions like that?
    ridiculous.

I’ve ranted and raved about this before…
and it still sickens me. Do you think the parent doesn’t know what the child company is up to?

it was only 2 years ago that we heard about NS Power handing over 100 MILLION to their parent company despite the SHITTY infrastructure we live with… announce theuir spending 50 million to get a swanky new headquarters….then apply for rate hikes…
then make too much profit… then apply for MORE RATE HIKES…. then offer half a million to the city.
If you need rate hikes… you shouldn’t have half a million to ‘donate’ to anyone.

that’s like asking your boss for a raise because you can’t afford to eat..
but buying a new Porsche Cayenne to get to and from work.

what the fuck? council had it WAY wrong from the start.
Don’t repress the beer companies for advertising…
after-all the high prices of beer here is because of the fucking gubment…
repress FUCKING EMERA from splashing their shitty name anywhere near the oval.
