Giving somebody a $700 ticket for jaywalking or failing to push a cross button is absurd. People avoid letting their meters run out to escape a $25 dollar parking tickets. If they actually started to regularly enforce the $50 fine that most other provinces use for people caught jaywalking, that would be a sufficient deterrent. There is no need to create a punishment that well exceeds that of a speeding ticket, passing a school bus and not wearing a bicycle helmet for failing to press a crosswalk button. By all means, crack down on jaywalking, crack down on drivers who don’t yield to pedestrians, but be bloody reasonable about it. — Safety my ass

  1. Yes it’s an absurd amount of money. But as a pedestrian who always pays attention while crossing the street (and has almost been struck by motorists on more than one occasion despite this) what’s so damn hard about pressing the button and waiting for the light or crossing in a designated area and waiting for traffic to stop?

  2. I guess OP hasn’t seen a speeding ticket these days. You got any idea what an accidental buzz through a 60kmh zone at 100kmh while in a construction zone…. got any idea what a ticket like that is worth? It can be up over $1000

  3. There’s not such thing as a $700 ticket for jaywalking. You are exaggerating. I do hate cops though so maybe you met an asshole that needs to be battled in court.
